Partners of AmigaOS4.0 on Tour 2003 in Basel : Comment 1 of 8 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Tipu Sattar on 12-Jun-2003 07:51 GMT | Will we ever see the PPC version of the OS? I mean if it was so close to completion then surely there must be a version for the PPC which boots.
Admitedly it may have a lot of bugs but come on - showing a version of the OS that runs on the existing Amiga's only fuels my suspicion that all they have managed to do is compile the exisiting OS and add a lot of utilities that are out there! |

Posted by James Carroll on 12-Jun-2003 23:05 GMT | In reply to Comment 3 (Jon): ExecSG is fully PPC native, complete with 68k emulation. They will be migrating OS 4.0 modules (currently in 68k code) to PPC over the next few weeks. I think they're still working out minor bugs in ExecSG at the moment, as well as finishing other misc things, but OS 4.0 as a system "exists". |

I take it that means on classic Amiga hardware (plus PPC card) with the old chipset and large chunks of 68k code: the CIA's for printing, keyboard and the serial port, Paula for sound, the blitter, Zorro autoconfig bus, even chip ram. Now I wonder how long does it take to go from there to a completely new hardware with PCI bus, PS/2 mouse and keyboard, ethernet, no blitter, no CIA, no Paula - you get the idea. Does it sound like a walk in the park? Not to me. Does it sound like it would be ready in 2003 ? Not to me. Am I too pessimistic? |
