A first release of the official MorphOS SDK is immediately available to members of the MorphOS Developer Connection in the files section. It is labeled "pre-release", because many, but not all, OS-parts are covered yet. This release of the MorphOS SDK contains:

- MorphED 1.0
- a complete PPC-native GCC/GG-compiler-environment
- a complete set of MorphOS includes
- documentation, example code and articles on many new features of MorphOS
- the latest release of Barfly PPC ASM (as contribution)
- the latest OpenPCI SDK (as contribution)

Cool. Why has Amiga Inc, in 10+ years, never managed to release a free SDK with compiler and everyting?!

Yes, but it wasn't free, was it ? I was speaking about a free and downloadable SDK. I didn't buy that CD. Not for commercial projects ? Smart move.

What is the relationsship between Phoenix und mdc, will you guys integrate your services or remain separate places? I only know about Phonix via the cheap mainboards - are you the hardware devision ? :-)

We will remain separate sites which act as partners. Felix's site handles MorphOS-specific development and coding-related issues, while Phoenix will handle all Pegasos-related development on multiple OSes, and operate under Phoenix's expanded definition of DEVELOPER, which includes many categories besides coders of those who contribute to the advancement of the platform.

So Phoenix is involved with MorphOS too of course, but the focus is on different services which compliment those of Felix's excellent site. Some examples are the Initiatives that Phoenix is involved in including the current developer seeding with free (used, pre-April) Pegasos Betatester boards, the PhDemoScene group, The Superbundle group, the US Tradeshows group, etc.

You make it sound like producing a free SDK is something they've actually FAILED at, but the truth is that NOT all SDKs in the world are free, nor will they ever be. Didn't think it was a measurement of success...

I think they did, and the mistake later was corrected by releasing the OS3.9 NDK freely (but it could be argued that it was far too late to make a difference). Selling critical rights to a book publisher was a terrible mistake, too, for IMHO it would have made a difference if all that had been made available online and freely in 198x. Persoanlly, I would have started with C much earlier. Remember the price of SAS/C ? I still shudder when remembering the costs of Amiga development in that time (excellent compiler, though).

It will be interesting to see what Hyperion does in response to Genesi's move: no free developer material at all, like early Commodore, at least free autodocs + headers (like late Amiga), or a full-blown SDK and developer site, like Gensi did for MorphOS.

When did Microsoft or Apply ever release a free SDK? You count BASIC or something? Check the cost of commercial compilers for MS or Apple. Not the user intro packages, but the ones that allow you to develop and distribute.

Then look at the free and shareware compilers that have been available in the past.

And how much real documentation is found for MS and Apple?

Commodore and even Amiga, Inc. look pretty reasonable overall, I'd say.

I don't know about Apple but Microsoft releases free SDKs all the time (.net toolkit, c# compiler, visual basic for applications, etc.), open your eyes. That does not mean that everything is free, their top tools and programs are in fact very expensive. But they have a good mix, you can get started for next to nothing. I can't count how many copies of VisualC and Microsoft's developer material I have picked up by now just by buying books :-)

Well, given that Apple provide a complete free SDK for MacOS X, complete with a full free C / C++ compiler and everything to anyone who wants it, I'd say you need to rethink your question...

For example, Microsoft .Net SDK is free. Sure, you can pay for a higher-end IDE like Visual Studio, but just like Java, you can esaily get started (and more) on Microsoft .Net for free.

Symbian development kits for Nokia phones are free as well, they even send you the cd-rom for free. And the Apple example was already given here.

Sure, there are plenty of examples of expensive SDKs to go around too, but I think Genesi have got it right here... they need to encourage development.

If companies like Apple, Sun, Nokia and Microsoft think they need to give SDKs out for free to get their new platforms going, I think companies like Genesi would be crazy not to!

I think a free developer kit that is easy to download, install and
start using is very important. It's important to attract existing
developers who don't want to spend a lot of time just to get started.
But it's perhaps even more important for people who are just regular
users, but who might become developers if it's easy enough to just
start playing without having to cross too many barriers before
something actually happens.

I think the question was IF Hyperion will create a SDK, not if they would put restrictions on it. And the MorphOS, while a good start, is only just a start, much more needs to be done. For example, we need a source level debugger for gcc and a user interface designer integrated into the sdk. A project manager would be nice as well. It would also be good to have wizards that create application skeletons (with arexx port) or skeleton libraries. Long way to go.

Yes, but that's not exactly what I meant. "Wizards" would be small applets that query information (application name, type, compatibility/target, etc.) and then generate a project that can be compiled right away, auto-insert information such as library name and version into the source codes, create a project folder, a makefile, empty history file, etc.

Am I that bad at expressing myself? I don't just want another template (like clib on Aminet), I want an *interactive* wizard, which creates a folder and prepares everything by modyfing the source code. The name of the executable/library (inserted into makefile and headers) would be only one of many options. Other options could be: Initial version? What libraries do you want to have opened in init code? Shared library base? Do you want code to have per-task local data? Size of library base? Do you want global data with semaphore protetion? Do you want CVS to be set up? And so on.
