AmigaWorld.net has posted three new screenshots of AmigaOS4. Various well known classic Amiga titles including SnoopDOS and DirectoryOpus are shown running while using the new highly customizable interface and anti-aliased fonts. For today 'AmigaOS 4 on Tour' events are planned for Austria and Sweden. Earlier this week I wrote a report of last week's Swiss event.

I wonder if Steffen Haeuser is around to 'set up' (explain in detail) the screenshots?

Look closely at that active window in snap 3 (with dopus):
it has 3 different looks for 4 window borders. The left border (which shows how much space used) has a somewhat flat look to it, meaning that there is no gradient used. Looks very different in style from the one at the right side. Both the bottom border and right border look ok. But then, the top border looks completely different again, using what seems to be another blue (especially going towards the bottom of the border).

Also i hope that the arrow in snap1 is something which is not finished yet and there seems to be no consistency in snap1. Gradient used on the sliders and others, but not on the buttons. It looks quite a mess in there. But it appears that this was not finished.

But looking better and better each time!!

In reply to Comment 3 (z5):
Hmm, perhaps it was kind of stupid of Hyperion to use MakeCD as
an example, since it uses the Triton GUI toolkit. This toolkit
draws its own buttons, and is not using Gadtools, which in turn
means that some of the gadgets cannot be patched to the new OS4
look (as of yet).

This explains the inconsistency...

ah, that explains a lot :) My comments on snap1 are then useless :)

thanks.

one little point still: the connection between the top border of a window and the right and left side, it would look better if that could be done without an interruption. It is now as if the top border is on top of the left/right/bottom window border. There is a separation line at both side where the left and right border start.

It is now looking very good IMO.

If "Convert" on the Partition Wizard is a Tooltip, then its font is rather big. I hope there is a separate setting for the Tooltips font - this is a problem in MUI where it uses the same font as for menus. You want a much smaller font for Tooltips than for menus.

In reply to Comment 7 (Niclas A):
Just to make it clear, Triton seem to use some GadTools
gadgets, for instance the cycle menu gadget. That explains why
that gadget is having the OS4 style. So in effect, OS4
is not patching the Triton GUI per se :)

AFAIK, the Screens icon is something along the same lines of the PSI utlity of MUI fame. It will let you define screens that your programs then will be able
to use. It's nice to have this as standard in the OS.

When the phuq will you people stop dreaming and start open your eyes?
Hey, please turn on your brains, what of all those boring snapshots you saw is real? All that we know now is that - yawn - there is an AmigaOS 3.9 with an updated gui.
OS4 is running (how much fast? how stable? no one knows) on classic Amigas, which incidentally have real 68k and custom chips, equipped with CyberstormPPC: without them OS4 won't even boot.
Please stop spreading those damn lame screenshots (btw, hey Mr. Hermans: OS4 runs in 800x600 mode only?!) and give us sumthing REAL to play with.

In the third screenshot, look in the left DOpus view, for OS4:Kickstart. It's crammed with files which seem to be libraries, but they're called .ld instead of .library. What ever happened to the old AmigaOS custom of using human-readable file names?

I would assume the OS is running on an older amiga hardware setup ?
(graphics mem only 2 megs at the top of the screengrabs)

If there is only 2 meg available for shifting graphics, then I'd be pretty please Hyperion can get that much oomph out of that small amount.

Now if it said something like Graphics Mem: 256meg DDR then i would expect a little more.

;)

*splutter*

The GFX-mem tells the size of the chip-mem, which is allmonst never used on
Amigas with a GFX-card. AFAIK the A4000 used for that shot had a Voodoo3 in
it and those normally come with 16 mb.

Do you want something to just play with or do you want a fully functional, next-generation, PPC native AmigaOS? You can play with AROS, MorphOS, Amithlon, Amiga Forever, etc. AmigaOS4 on the other hand, is the real deal. You can take a look at it's feature set here:

http://os.amiga.com/os4/OS4FeatureSet.php

Read the feature set carefully, I would hardly refer to it as just "AmigaOS3.9 with an updated GUI". Yes, these kind of screenshots doesn't show any new functionalities, only the new GUI. This is why they have arranged the "OS4 on Tour". Please don't make any judgements about AmigaOS4 functionality until you've seen it and tried it yourself.

You really should know better than judging an OS from just looking at screenshots. You could've atleast read the feature set before dismissing the entire AmigaOS4 team's hard work, you know...

AROS, Amithlon, WinUAE on my Amiga?! What the phuq are you talking about?
I played with them all, but as far as I remember I run 'em on x86 only... hmmm... prolly I am missing sumthing...
Oh, and at least for the MorphOS ages ago there was a (dirrrty) demo running on my machines: obviously I played with it, but I got bored by its unstability pretty soon... v1.0 for classic Amigas anyone?

I read that feature list many times, long time ago: but after a while, the only happiness I got from it, was printing it and using the papers to smack my biatch up... are you really happy with a fscking .pdf filled with crap marketing nice'n'gorgeous words?
D'ya really have enough?? If so, I got many brochures here for you to play with.

It is an OS4 screenshot made by an OS4 betatester to allow us to iron out bugs in AWeb's usage of ReAction in OS4.
Two distinct errors occur:
1. The unability to snapshot window positions outside the boundary of the screen.
2. Colormapping is incorrect as you can see.

Oh, you mean exactly like you just dismissed MorphOS, AROS, Amithlon, Amiga Forever etc as mere toys? You have tried them all right? With no preconceptions? Thought so.

I really don't get why you even bother trying to play this knight in shining armor stuff, most people have already seen through your shallow little game long ago, and I'm sure more and more see it every time you post obvious bias slagfests like this, and as usual you're the one dragging petty OS wars into the thread, which is pretty evident with your reply to a post with no mention of MorphOS, AROS, Amithlon or Amiga Forever (infact, the whole thread had been totally clean of any mention of either until you brought it up), yet you manage to twist it into OS bashing, way to go, hope you're proud of yourself...

Very good point. Unreadable file names and extensions suck.
Furthermore, they look like Peecee or Linux crap that noone wants on an Amiga.
