why not give up on the whole java thing and just develop a really easy going language and toolkit so that everyone can make apps instead of complaining that there aren't enough ;)

Whats with Java anyway? It's NOT REALLY that revolutionary. Believe or not, a humanbeing can do without it. No it's really true. It didn't live up to its hype.

This is a hobby project. It is NO port, but a native implementation of JRE 1.3.1 for AmigaOS. Its design goal is to map the java classes 1:1 to the C++ implementation. So it will be easy to implement AWT (or Swing) for AOS.
There are some interesting apps out there for Java, like edonkey clients and the likes. So I do not think the effort in creating a Java VM for AOS is pointless.

Maybe I should set up a poll, to ask if it is better to stop development on this (already dead?) project. So the community can decide if it makes sense:-(

Ok. This was only a joke. We will develop this baby regardless of what anybody thinks, because it is OUT baby ;-)

To all who think this development does not make sense:

Do better, or tell me what would make sense to develop for AOS?

Seeing as Java is very popular in schools now, I think it can become very important in the future.
Change takes time.

Hey, I turned up satallite TV one of these days at 4am and it was passing a JAVA tutorial in a italian channel! And it's been going for more than a week now. Er... no I didn't see it:)
But I give all my support for this project. If nothing, it makes some pressure on AInc. that the developers want to continue to code AOS freely as they whish.

Hey, best of luck with it! ;)

One question, though- "Sun's JRE" seems to specifically refer to Sun's product of that name - or at least, they've had things called such in the past. Thus, I read "Sun's JRE 1.3.1 implementation for the Amiga Platform" as suggesting it's derived from the official JRE/JDK 1.3.1 sources, as those have been released under some restrictions to allow use with/community maintenance on Linux and *BSD. [It's been a while since I've looked at Sun's licenses or product lineup, so forgive me for being vague.]

If it's an independent reimplementation of the Java 1.3.1 spec(??), perhaps it would be better to phrase it as such?

Keep up the good work! Java for AOS is really important (my opinion)...

And I can't really believe how some people can complain about someone starting a project to do something useful for AOS in there spare time!

Without such enthusiats AOS = Dead!
Without these "Your effort suck! Give it up... We don't need any appz for AOS! -people" AOS and its community would be a much better place...

I tried jamiga with some of my early and easiest java examples (jamiga supports the very basic lang, io and util libraries only) recompiled with jikes on my miggy and they seem to work flawlessy... but if asked, I'd say that kaffe on the Amiga is the my favourite solution atm.

It definitely is. Every other commercial OS out there has a version of Java. It is one of the major programming languages.

"And I can't really believe how some people can complain about someone starting a project to do something useful for AOS in there spare time!"

There are some miserable gits around who don't want to see _any_ Amiga-related project succeeding.

Wery GOOD !!!! I'm happy that there is project like this. Many of us who have seriously developed softwre for the mainstrea as a work don't ignore Java and do think Java is quite important these days. It's personal opinion then if you like Java or not, you can't ignore the fact that it's used more and more these days. Amiga needs Java. So I really this prohect can success.

I'm having to program in java just today.
My favorite is now C#
(although I have always a place in my heart for scripting languages like tcl/tk, and Rebol)

But...java is definately used on those big unix boxes and unix'ish oriented stuff like oracle.

doing an address cleanser client....no I'm not a professional developer, though
I seem to do enough of it.
java would be great for a desktop platform like amiga os or morphos for
the same reason its nice on Mac OS X....just occasionally you find a program
on the java platform never written for your fav. platform...like on Mac OS X
a couple years ago (beta version)...there were some freeware x servers, and terminal emulators that I needed..ran them in java...of course now, Mac OS X has more and more software, and you can find more and more native without the need for java.
but Amiga would get a great boost, and there are even java web browsers.

Off the top of my head, Mindterm SSH is quite popular; someone on A.org mentioned Tomcat (not sure about 'production' use -- though on the other hand, why not? -- but it always helps to have standard tools available on your desktop of choice, for learning/development purposes); there certainly *are* useful applets on the web, like NASA's satellite tracker; Espial's Escape probably still compares favorably vs. the existing Amiga browsers; IBM have coughed up the Eclipse IDE, and apparently have an office suite of some form floating around in the Websphere product line (though it's hard to say if that's an applet, or something DHTML-based and completely server-side)...

Sure, it never lived up to its promise on the desktop (and seems mostly an excuse to sell more RAM for servers ;), while, like all crossplatform runtimes, allowing closed-source development to retain portability), but people do write some useful code in it. The best reason to have such would be for corporate cred -- if, say, timeclocking is handled through an applet at HyperUltraMegaCorp, they'll be a lot more comfortable purchasing a few boxes for their videography department or whatever if they can support the corporate standard.

Hi,

Java apps I know of:

Eclipse (IDE)
IntelliJ IDEA (IDE)
SAP Business Connector
SAP Business Connector Developer
IBM Websphere Integrator (former MQ Series Integrator)

These are the ones I use, and they work fine. And are reliable. Been running a production system with the last three for 1 1/2 years with no problems.

Java is mainly used these days for dynamic web page generation (sites that end in JSP or contain "Servlet" in their path), the backend work (communicating with mySQL to search for a book in an online store), or for little games on mobile phones. These are only a few uses of Java. I myself work for a company producing Time, Expense and Procurement web based solutions each of which use Java.

I hope these guys will keep working on this project as Java on the Amiga is a pretty nice idea. I hope I'll have time to try it out during the weekend.

Anyone who does not like a project, might as well not use the product or even better start their own I-really-think-that-the-amiga-needs-this project.

I raised an eyebrow at this JAVA project for the Amiga the other day, and even downloaded it - although I haven't got around to trying it yet, not really sure how tbh.

Anyway, please tell us more about this project. I use my Amiga as my main computer and since there is no JAVA solution on the Amiga I've never had chance to get into it before. I can see the advantage with it because it means you can run all the nice JAVA based applications and stuff - very useful, but does it also help with Internet based stuff?
For example there may be chatrooms or whatever that require JAVA, and normally if you visit them with an Amiga Browser you get a complaint that the Browser isn't compatable. If you were able to run JAVA applications on the Amiga, then would it solve these compatability issues as well or is that a completely seperate thing?

Good luck with the project - I'll point my Browser in it's general direction every so often to see how it's coming along.
