At the recent Pegasos-presentation at the central station in Leipzig, Germany, also Mandrake 9.1 was shown on the Pegasos, installed using Michael Heider's Image-Installer.

It seems there is effort to port the Hurd to PPC too... Interesting....

I would have thought getting rid of the 2gb or something disk limit etc would be more of a concern ;)

Hurd is what RMS and co have been working on for many many many years as the "GNU" kernel.

They still haven't got very far, and have been overtaken by Linux (which is why RMS insists on calling Linux GNU/Linux). It is doubtful if Hurd will ever get anywhere.

" They still haven't got very far, and have been overtaken by Linux"

Linux overtaking HURD would assume that HURD started before Linux which isn't true.

"(which is why RMS insists on calling Linux GNU/Linux)."

RMS insists that Linux based *operating systems* using the GNU tools should be called GNU/Linux, as in GNU on Linux. Which is kinda fair as the vast majority of Linux based operating systems use the GNU operating system tools and even lower down, are built with the GNU compiler et al.

"It is doubtful if Hurd will ever get anywhere."

And the BSD's are dead ;)

Typical RMS bull, with RMS trying to muscle in and gain credit where none is due (primarily because his HURD project still has got nowhere).

Just because gcc is used to compile code does NOT make it a GNU product - Linux can easily exist without any GNU tools.

You know what? Our Solaris systems at work havr the GNU suite of tools installed on them too. Does that mean we are running GNU/Solaris?

My Amiga (RIP) had the GeekGadgets GNU suite upon it. I don;t ever recall running GNU/AmigaOS though...

There are a lot of GNU tools that are used almost everywhere e.g. compilers, if you do your research you'll notice that RMS licensed the GNU C library under a special license that allows it to used in non opensource projects.

However I digress, the GNU project was formed to create an operating system and not just a bunch of tools for everyone elses .... so the GNU created a shell etc on other operating systems in readyness for their operating system kernel : HURD. Linus started his kernel in '91 using the GNU tools to build it and to form a base operating system with his kernel.

RMS doesn't want the Linux *KERNEL* to be called GNU/Linux .. he wants systems using the GNU tools as their base operating system to make the fact clear, so for Linux operating systems he suggests GNU/Linux .. fair enough.

IIRC solaris has been using the linux kernel recently in some forms ... If you got what RMS was saying you would understand how this would be Solaris/linux.

"My Amiga (RIP) had the GeekGadgets GNU suite upon it. I don;t ever recall running GNU/AmigaOS though..."

The GNU tools in geekgadgets aren't making up your basic userland are they? so it wouldn't be GNU/AmigaOS .. and if they did it would be GNU/Exec or something similar ;)

Nice try, byut hopelessly wrong.

Solaris doesn't include Linux code therein (although Linux contains code released by Sun which they developed for Solaris...)

What you are probably thinking of is Sun's range of x86-based computers, which run both Solaris x86 and also Linux.

None of the systems are "Solaris/Linux" though, or whatever convoluted term you want to use.

Linux can exist perfectly well without GNU tools.
RMS has no validation to his DEMAND that Linus rename "Linux" to "GNU/Linux", other than his normal overinflated ego trying to take control over everything as usual.

You have to seperate kernel and userland ... a Solaris userland could possibly exist on a Linux kernel just as the GNU userland does.

"What you are probably thinking of is Sun's range of x86-based computers, which run both Solaris x86 and also Linux."

I thought Sun released a Linux based solaris .. i could be wrong ;)

"Linux can exist perfectly well without GNU tools."

Ah, so you're going to build the kernel with visual c++, write your own c library and shell etc ;)

"RMS has no validation to his DEMAND that Linus rename "Linux" to "GNU/Linux","

IIRC he never asked that they rename the kernel GNU/Linux but start calling GNU based Linux systems GNU/Linux opposed to just linux to show the presence of the GNU tools

"other than his normal overinflated ego trying to take control over everything as usual."

Maybe its just morons misunderstanding or making up what RMS has said that makes it seem so?

I couldn't give a rats arse that you don't think it shouldn't be GNU/Linux ... its just your reasoning is that stupid that it shows no knowledge of the subject, and I dislike bitching without reason.

" I thought Sun released a Linux based solaris .. i could be wrong ;)"

You are wrong, I'm afraid! Completely wrong.

Sun used to do SunOS (BSD based), then they switched to SysV based Solaris.

They have Solaris for SPARC and Solaris for x86, neither with Linux in them.

They did dabble in SunLinux for their x86 boxes for a while, but realised that there was no value to be added in what they were doing (taking RH Linux and badging it as SunLinux), so they now just support straight x86 Solaris and RedHat Linux x86 on their x86 boxes.

But there is not, nor has there ever been, a Linux-based Solaris. Ever.
