It's amazing to see that such good news got maximum 10 comments (when it's not less) whereas posts like 'Pegasos rocks AmigaOne suxx' or the contrary got several hundreds.

You can only say "great work guys" so many times :-)

but until there is atleast a Alpha release, i think many people will keep off from installing it.

Anyone got any comments on what will run with this?

Exactly. We have seen a great deal of very promising projects during the past 10 years or so, which all looked very cool in the beginning, but then turned out to be abandoned in the end.

Sure, this looks nice, but I am not holding my breath. I applaud your efforts though, and I hope you make it all the way!
:-)

Probably because there are lots of game players here, and ANN-wars is a popular online game.

I think Java for Amiga is extremely important, but it won't give instant fun to most ordinary users. A good aim would be to get Java to the point where there can be a plugin for IBrowse, enabling use of web applets such as VRML viewers.

It's easy to attract comments:

Version 1:

Hey, guys this is a great software. Please make it available for OS4 only so that "they' will be angry ! :-)

Version 2:

Good job, one more program to make Mos a master-piece. Now, with Java too, it will be able to
be an OS better than any other in the community.

:-)))

bye

Haha, I deactivate java from all my browsers, no matter what CPU I have. Java seems to destroy performance of each browser I've tried it on, it will be awful on the amiga.

I don't understand why simply having the Java plugin enabled should slow down general browsing? surely most of the time it should be doing nothing at all?!

Why would it be worse on an Amiga browser than on others? Amiga software is often more efficient and multitasks well.

A Java plugin should be using no cycles if you are not running an applet. Likewise a Flash plugin should be doing nothing if there is no Flash on the page.

Applets in browsers is only one reason to want Java. The main reason is to be able to do Java programming on an Amiga.

The Amiga should have versions of all major programming languages, like any other computer.

I think that alot of Amiga users, having never had java, are mixed up on java. There are java apps that many Amiga users will be quite pleased by when the day comes thta they can use them properly. Art of Illusion, a free open source 3D package comes to mind, as does the Gameboy advance emulator. Seems like much of the Amiga community doesn't really know java from javascript as well...

The performance of Java is not that bad (rather good actually) and there are quite some good java-demos to show that. The problem when starting an applet from a browser is that usually the java VM needs to be started up first. That indeed takes ages (its pretty big) and that indeed does slow the browsing-experience down quite a bit. Doens't mean java itself is slow though. And it might very well be solved better on AmigaOS/MOS :)

Onno
