Would be kindy funny to see AROS get a native TCP/IP stack before MOS ;)

Cheers

Is it me or is AROS development accelerating at a speed not usually seen in Amiga projects?

It's you, AROS has no GCC nor any TCP stack yet, and there are only hand full developers so even if any one puts some money on there heads, it will take a long time, the best way make AROS move is to join inn.

Does that come with a complimentary continental breakfast and a mint on the pillow? In addition to the bounty, do we get clean sheets?

Were these a part of AmigaOS 3.1? While usefull they are, they arn't exactly part of AROS core goal, an AmigaOS3.1 clone.

AROS's main goal this to make an AmigaOS 3.1 compatible operationg system, that works are much like AmigaOS 3.1 as possible... THis does not stop us from adding features found in the other Amiga style OS's (Resource Tracking, Memory enforcement, new OOP system etc... since adding them is transparent to any User, Developer and Application).
But in order to make development easier, one needs network support and a gcc compiler as standard on the AROS system istelf, so that is what we need to add next.

With a TCP/IP stack, AROS actually becomes useful... Check your Emails, Surf the web.. ftp... IRC... etc... you know it makes sense :-)

I think that was the original goal, but the aims have surely moved on now - and rightly so, to make a matching a ten year old OS as the aim in 2003 would be foolish.

For AROS to start getting some proper credibility, it needs a native GCC in order to free developers of the Linux ties, and it needs a TCP stack before it can start being useful to normal users in these days when Internet access is paramount.

It is wise to target two such vital components for the offered bounty, and it would be even better if some of the commercial concerns who should support AROS (in order to give secondary support to their own platforms by widening the user base for Amiga applications) were to expend some of their resources and experience to help out in achieving this.

One of the things tha occured to me is that the Amiga did have alot of third party freely available software being made for it, as seen on Aminet. There was/is an effort to even port GNU software over to the Amiga in the Geek Gadgets project.

And in order for development to better move forward for AROS and application development and such which might be anything from porting over stuff found on Aminet to developing new stuff....

Well TCP/IP and GCC are rather inherent in regenerating the long lost Amiga spirit of the user.

Doncha think?

They were not bundled, but the Amiga always had C compilers (and other languages) available running natively, and there were TCP stacks available for 3.1.

"Part of" doesn't mean much when the OS is so modular. Unlike Windows, where everything is tangled together like a bunch of cables, AmigaOS allows features to be added or removed without affecting the rest of the OS.

Ignore the trolls is the best answer. TCP/IP, GCC porting and the File Corruption bug are all now up to $50 @. =)
