Dave Pitcher (aka Miffy) has reviewed Eyetech's AmigaONE Power System, based on the A1G4-XE motherboard at the AmigaWorld.net community portal.

Nice review :-) However, I find PPC UAE versions rather limited, and it applies to other "motherboards that are discontinued"'s UAE as well. Apart from that, I liked it much.

I notice it has Picasso memory settings, anyone know how to get it using P96 modes or is that WinUAE only?

" I notice it has Picasso memory settings, anyone know how to get it using P96 modes or is that WinUAE only?"

You need to head over to the picasso homepage or aminet and pickup the latest P96 archive. In the UAE settings give it some P96 ram and boot.. from there install P96 with the UAEGFX driver; It will warn you that its for WinUAE only but it should work (It works here on Linux/i386).

You may want to also try the exotic binaries that Debian has ... IIRC they have the BSDSocket.library patch etc :)

I just got new troll idea... Since you can run UAE on Linux why even bother for OS4. You could install OS 3.9 on it and run more applications than OS4 ever could :) And it is Amiga branded machine too -> no problems with license. Anyway nice reviewb ut OS4 review for CSPPC could be more interesting. HW review without primary OS is always "crippled"...

Yet you rave on about the Pegasos & MorphOS, wich has asmuch in common with the Amiga as UAE, if you look at it.

Both run legacy apps, don't they? Both aren't designed by Jay Miner, Carl Sassenrath, Dave Hymie and the rest of their geniusses, neighter runs on 68k, both feature an 68k emulator...

Your point just backfired EVA

Maybe I should start running windows on my x86.. thats like its primary OS, the fact that I doesn't have the features I require or that the hardware is general purpose and thus is designed to run almost anything you want doesn't come into it. bah

Juust a point on the scoring. Am I right in saying that a 0 in the niggle factor cat is good, but a 10 in the rest is good too. Wouldn't that have an effect on the final score?

Niggle factor has a negative effect on scoring the rest do not. But the final score is not a mathematical average because different factors mean different things in relative weighting to me.

Just for the record, EVA is an abbreviation for "Extra-Vehicular Activity". We can therefore assume that "Eva" is not this poor troll’s name, but that the troll is simply referring to it's favourite habit of taking long, lonely walks in that massive airless vacuum that inhabits the space between her ears...

I guess, that's true... afaik, Teron boards were designed primarily for Linux use...

But in my opinion, when Eyetech sells them as "AmigaOnes", it sounds, they're supposed to run something with official "Amiga" name (among other OS'es, and no, I don't mean "just" WB3.x on UAE)

Currently, there is no this "Official Amiga OS" but it should be available some time after CSPPC version (Which should be available... Well... Soon?)

"AmigaOne without OS4 is like Mac without MacOS. Usable, but something important is missing there."

However, the board is equally usable as a Linux machine, and the review set out to discover just how well that works. It seems to be very efficient, but it wasn't clear how it would compare with a PC running the same distro.

My bet is that far more AmigaOnes and Pegasoses will be sold to run Linux than any other OS.

Spectrum won for me. Sure, the C64 had more hardware in there, but did that matter for the games? Noooo. OTOH the 4 Mhz Z80 vs. the <1Mhz 6502 made the difference when playing Elite and a bunch of other games...

Spectrum was a cool machine, one that I could still build hardware for ;-)

But what about the awful Speccy sound!!! Arrrggghhh, my ears!!! ;-)

I never played Elite on the Spectrum. I used to play it on a BBC Micro B in school and then spend hours on it on the C64 at home. I still give the Amiga version a whirl now and then. Frontier never managed to create the "thrill" of the original :-(

I will be serious just for one moment.
I readed the review and, then, compared it in an open mind to the Pegasos review of Decanini.

In Cristophe review, like in other Pegasos reviews, I see the use of software and an Os that are maded, created and used by Amiga fan people (aka people that TODAY continue to use also their A4000, not a stupid emulator).
They spoke about Frogger, Mui, Voyager, Diropus, Yam and a lot of new and old programs created by enthusiast Amiga programmers and used by all real Amiga users.

While in "Amiga"one review?
"The KDE control center is a sight for sore eyes, in minutes I have changed the default theme considerably and the desktop now looks how I like it"
"its time to see what the Package Manager ( a graphical installer that wrappers Debians' ..."
"Time to play with UAE. It is straighforward to get to, from the 'K' menu run straight to the top and click on UAE..."

This is the point m8s ... Amiga is KDE? Amiga is Debian? Amiga is UAE?
I think that Amiga is my eng-italian translator Ital2.5, or Yam2.4 used by my boyfiend too, or the little Frogger capable to play corrupted video file that all Linux players are uncapable to understand. I think that Amiga is not an Rpm or a Mainboard that runs a Linux distro and has the name Amiga. Or for you this is an Amiga?

I never thought I'd say this, but you've written an interesting and thought provoking post. Personally, I'd like to have more details on running and configuring the UAE with the package and comparing it to WinUAE. It would also be nice if Dave owned a catweasle too to test original Amiga floppy games and software. Perhaps in the next review?

However, until OS4 is released then all we can do is revire Linux and the AmigaOne hardware. Like it or not, the AmigaOne is an Amiga and you can cry all you like about it. Just because someone sells you an A500 without it's Workbench disks doesn't mean that the A500 isn't an Amiga.

Why can't you write comments like this all of the time instead of wading in with flame-fanning waffle?

Debian was ported to the A1 by enthusiastic Amiga people who still have their A4000s. Its a review of what I got in the box for a specific purpose, not of AOS4 or and not specifically of the AmigaOS parts. I focussed on Linux because I am fed up with reviews saying "oh and now to wait for AOS4" and also because it seems to be so scarey to Amiga users.

Either way, it is nothing to get a political cob on about. If you can post this articulately with a bit of thought then perhaps you need to be thoughtful before you post each time.

Nice review.

I personally do not fancy on learning PPC Linux while waiting for the next AmigaOS.

Amiga-like things, like MorphOS appeal a lot more in the meanwhile.

I still wish Hyperion would release a public BETATESTER version of AOS4.
