In reply to Comment 10 (Christophe Decanini):
That's because MPlayer does not support DeCSS stuff. Let me explain
summarily :

Most DVDs contain scrambled data which needs to be de-scrambled
(ofcoz) even before being decompressed. Almost all box-office movies,
and some mainstream shows. Only less valuable titles may not be
crypted (I guess this costs some money too).

There are legal reasons involved here.

The only software DVD player supporting this is AMP. It still lacks
DVD Nagivation though. (but it has a simple GUI to select title and
audio/subs tracks before playing), but it's too slow even on the
pegasos. I couldn't get a DVD played smoothly here, there's some
frameskip.

In reply to Comment 12 (Rafo):
What makes you think MPlayer doesn't?

MPlayer uses libdvdcss (see cdfr's post above), this does all the decrypting.

Yes, there are legal reasons, just as there are legal reasons for not supporting mpeg2, mpeg4 and a bunch of other codecs without a license, yet they all do it, strange huh? ;)

..ofcos, this does not get any simpler if EU votes in software patents, I suggest you all take a look at http://swpat.ffii.org/index.en.html

-Waking Life
-Snatch (Although the default audio track seems to be the director's commentary.)

I'm having some trouble with

And I don't have internet connection yet, and I've been busy with school stuff. That's why I did not answer yet to the mail. But I'm still a live and will try to fix DVD stuff, even If I don't know what happen now.
I get a "non-working with MPlayer DVD" now.

Nevertheless, I notice that some DVD drive doesn't work on the originalMPlayer on Linux too.

Yes, overlay is use in FS too.

In fact once you start MPlayer with overlay it keeps using it until the end.
About, pink: the bitmap of the windows is certainly fill with pink by the cgxvideo.library and then the lib takes care to update the window in hardware (without filling the bigmap). That's why this it's pink.

Nevertheless, it could be possible to make grab with overlay by using directly the YUV data give by the video decoder. This should not be very hard.

Some notes about this release (0.90.2):

There haven't been any changed in the DVD part of the code. so if you had problems with DVDs,... with 0.90, you'll still have the same problems with this version.

When using overlay, you'll get a pink screenshot in window mode AND (of course !) in fullscreen mode. Just use WPA or DirectCGX if you want to make a screenshot...

.FIXED: Previous window size restored when switching back to window mode

I used to switch MPlayer to fullscreenmode and back to windowmode to reset the window dimension to a proper aspect-ratio, this isn't possible anymore.

If you decide to take over this "fix", please think about adding a hotkey for resetting windowdimensions or at aleast changing windowdimensions to the right aspect-ratio.

.CHANGED: ESC key will now switch to window mode if in FS mode (exits otherwise)

Dunno why this was added, because it's not really convenient and can already be achived by pressing the "f" key. Escape should be reserved exclusively for quitting MPlayer.

Because it's standard behaviour on most MPlayer GUIs. It also matches the behaviour of Windows Media Player, which means people familiar with one will not get as confused when using the other.

Standardising interface behaviour is no bad thing.

IMO, standardising interface IS a BAD thing.

The world would be very sad if every country/vity would be identical each other. It's the same with OS/software. Why whould everyone use same short cuts than WMP ? Do you want a "Start" Menu ?
Moreover if everyone decide to copy the look/feel the most used there are no more creativity ...
I prefer the diversity. By the way, shortcuts are configurable in MPlayer.

Sorry, to have been quiet "evil" but this comment hurt me, I'm sensitive !!!!

the reason for making things standard is to make everything easyer for humans.
I guess you would prefer each country to use their own voltage current, own
definition of heat/cold, own units for measurements and so on.. ?

There is a differnce between standardising the protocol/file format/voltage/measurements ... and how the product is designed.

If we follow that Genesi should write a Windows-like deskop and forget Ambient ...
Apple should remove its docks (an amazing beautiful dock !) because people using Windows are not use to that ? etc ...
SongPlayer and ANR should be forget, they don't use WinAmp like skin ...

@DET Nicolas

I have no idea why my comment hurt you. It was not really aimed at you at all, nor do I think I said anything so terrible.

I was referring to interface behaviour, not interface design or look-and-feel. Furthermore, there's absolutely nothing wrong with adopting GOOD features from other designs or interfaces. There's no point in being different unless you can aldo do it BETTER.

In the case of MPlayer, it does the same thing wherever I've seen it: when in full-screen mode ESC reverts to window mode, and when in window mode ECS quits. To quit from full-screen mode just do ESC-ESC. It's hardly inconvenient. The ESC key is easier to locate than the 'F' key so using it to switch back to window mode makes sense. It's perfectly intuitive from where I'm standing.

Please, don't feel offended when there is no need to.

Ok guys: I added all these little things because I thought it was better, logic, more intuitive (and no matter what you think, I am still convinced it is)... I did not intend to copy any windows program behaviour (btw I am not using Windows MediaPlayer so I didn't know the behaviour of the ESC key for this program). And even if I wanted to do so: WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT ?

I spent a lot of time understanding MPlayer's code in order to add these little things and I'm sorry so many people dislike it. This is the last time I spend time for that :/ I'll come back later to see if people finally have started to open their eyes and mind.

@Nico: Did you know that every GUI OS use almost the same STANDARD messaging system ? Do you really think it is a bad thing ?! Too bad Xerox imposed this standard, right ? There are good things to learn from any OS out there: including Windows you seem to hate...

By the way, Leo, I don't blame you AT ALL to have spend a lot of time to improve MPlayer, not at all. I think it's nice and it's the "goal" of OpenSource software. You can continue to improve it if you want. I can help you if you want. I've no internet access at home at this moment, but I should be OnLine soon (1 or 2 weeks).

Agreed.

Why on earth to programmers insist on having a similar menu layout for all tools?

They should hide the "Save", "Quit", "open" etc menu entries amongst completely random and different menus, instead of always putting them in the "File" menu, right?

And not just with computers, either.

why do the vast majority of car manufaturers insit on following the same standard layout of accellerator pedal on teh right of the brake pedal? Can't they put those controls in different places in different cars? Why do they try to have a standard interface?
