I wasn't planning to buy any computers at all until the end of next year. But the MicroITX board is very tempting.

Hans-Joerg did point out on AmigaWorld that they still have a lot of work to do. (No doubt Eva will point this out too.) But I think we can now be certain that this will not be another BoXeR - the AmigaOne is a real product that will really be on sale.

Yes, these are AROS demos. They aren't part of the OS, they just happen to be on there because I wanted to have some nifty demos to run. They compile out of the box with just a bunch of compiler switches.

Orgin didn't have any problems with displaying the Rubberstring demo. If anyone of the authors has problems with their demo being there, mail me and I'll remove it. I just happen to like these demos...

MorphOS was working on non csppc/bppc hardware 2 years ago (or even more ?) and it's still under development and developing ... So where's the point to freak out that things finally start to run on AmigaOne ? There's probably still a long walk down the road to get into a final state imho and I pretty much know what I'm talking about.

"There's probably still a long walk down the road to get into a final state imho and I pretty much know what I'm talking about."

Everyone knows there is plenty still to do, and an OS is never in a final state (unless development stops). The reason to celebrate is that this is a major landmark for the AmigaOne. It is at the least the end of the beginning. It is a big accomplishment for a small team on a tiny budget. (Yes, so is MorphOS.)

Assertions that you "know what you are talking about" are groundless when you post pseudonymously and do not publish your track record.

Now I have only 3 notice from some friends there: at 12:30 am (ITA hour) no real Os4 was in the show and, for them, it was a speculation: anyway a well know italian programmer will post on ANN his comments on the first Empoli day here on ANN or on Amigaorg in the evening. Cya (for your happiness) sunday evening.

Apart from the fact that what he has to say is so obvious that anyone could say it, why should I be sure? I don't know who he is or what his qualifications and experience are.

The post was like going to a wedding and saying "What is there to celebrate? Her sister was married two years ago."

Apart from a few most of the demos were ported from PC demo sources
to AROS. So most of the original authors of this demos most likely
do not even know about "us".

> I admit that I had to fake the IPTR, though.

BTW: IPTR is an integer type that is big enough to
also make a pointer fit in it. It's unsigned (well,
to be true, it would be better to have both a signed
and an unsigned IPTR) so on 32 bit machines it's basically
identical to ULONG.

On 64 bit machines IPTR would be 8 bytes, while ULONG
would still be 4 bytes. It's to be used in places like
this:

IPTR top;

GetAttr(PGA_Top, propgadget_obj, &top);

ULONG would be wrong here, as boopsi attributes/attribute
querying is basically ~"typeless", so one cannot but make
it use a fixed-size type, but one which also is big enough
to fit a pointer. As a boopsi attribute might return a
pointer.

Nothing against that ;-) It's obvious that both sides can benefit from that, and porting between AmigaOS and AROS isn't really that difficult.

"On 64 bit machines IPTR would be 8 bytes, while ULONG would still be 4 bytes."

That's called the LLP64 model. The only operating system of any significance to have been built with that model is Windows 64, which is unproven and has almost no software.

On the other hand in the LP64 model used by everything from AIX to Linux the unsigned long is 8 bytes on a 64 bit machine. So everything Just Works (TM) as you would naturally expect.

Yeah, I read that on your web page :-)

> ULONG would be wrong here,

Tag items need an extension anyway. They're unsuited also for holding i.e. double values, and they are also not capable of hold 64 bit values unless you define tham that way. However, as soon as storage to disk or size (like in the display database) is concerned, you might get into trouble.

However, using ULONG as IPTR was the only thing that was required to get the demos running ;-)

ULONG is 32 bits wide on Amiga. I would expect unsigned long to be 64 bits wide
in a 64 bit implementation of the OS, but ULONG must still be 32 bits wide.

Isn't that the problem with these namings? PowerPC calls a 32 bit quantity a word, yet a WORD or UWORD is 16 bits...

The problem is really whant you run legacy 68k code that expects ULONG to be 32 bits...
