RIIHIMÄKI, FINLAND - October 1st, 2003 - Finnish Amiga Users Group held its annual meeting in Riihimäki, Finland on Saturday. In addition to the official meeting agenda, the user group presented AmigaOS4 beta and Pegasos running MorphOS to the public. Also on display was the Swedish Amiga magazine Azine and purchases could be made from an attending Amiga dealer.

The user group would like to thank Joni Halme, an AmigaOS4 beta tester, for obtaining permission for the demonstration and for demonstrating the beta on his Amiga 4000; Sami Ylönen for providing the meeting with a Pegasos running MorphOS; Gunne Steen of GGS-Data for the Azine magazines; Genesi for sending in Superbundles and brochures; the Finnish Amiga dealer, Gentle Eye Ky, for attending once again with their Amiga inventory; and of course all the user group members who, with their help and attendance, made this event possible.

Pictures of the event will be made available later.

More information about the Finnish Amiga Users Group can be found at http://saku.amigafin.org.

What was actually demonstrated on OS 4.0? Just system stuff? Would be cool to try out real apps like IBrowse or AmIRC.

Anyway, bring on the pictures! :)

In reply to Comment 1 (James Carroll):
IBrowse does not work on OS4 (emulation problem?)

Due to tight schedule there was not much apps to test.. no network = no AmIrc.
I would have wanted to test Cinema 4D and ImageFX too...

Thanks to Jontsa for demonstrating and answering questions.

What does that mean???

i guess this means something like "not impressed but not telling because it's not finished"?

i hoped to see an unbiased opinion from you.

oh well, i'll probably see it myself at benelux show.

Didn't want to say anything but here we go.. the first one to mention I am biased or concentrating only on negative points .. >NIL:

Negative:
Stability == zero
Lots of bugs overall the OS, for instance in Amidock, which I fiddled with quite a lot.
No JIT
Emulation and overall compatibity problems (Lots of software doesn't work at all. First time for me to crash an AmigaOS by running WBClock)
AmigaShell lacks lots of things (requesters, logsave etc.)

Positive:
- Preferences are very comprehensive and well made
- Localisation
- The Grimreaper
- The stuff you can do with menus (transparency, smooth corners etc.)
- USB config, seemed very simple (if it works, that is :)

OS4 on CStorm at the moment is unusable due to slowness and instability. Hopefully 68k -> ppc helps ALOT and I am sure the bugs gets ironed out aswell. We experienced like 15 (and no, I did not count) crashes/lockups/reboots in a short period of time. This doesn't happen when playing with the OS itself, only when running software that SHOULD work, IBrowse being one example.

There was no possibility to test Roadshow or the USB stack due to missing network and USB hardware, so I can't comment anything about that.

As it is, I can't think of many reasons why I (as a MOS user) should consider OS4 as an alternative.
Naturally it gets updated daily basis and will turn to a more mature product eventually, maybe overtaking MorphOS at some point. But there is still lots of work to do and I have to admit some estimates about the release of OS4, presented after the Italy-show, fit to my experiences aswell.

That said, there is lots of potential.. I was especially amazed about the prefs/configuration side of OS4.

Enough said, Eva can continue for me :)

@Hooligan:

thanks for report. Seems to confirm what could be read in other reports. It's quite worrying to see the lack of stability + slowness on CPPC, especially considering that it was meant to be released this year.

On the other hand, maybe it's one problem,feature missing or bug causing a lot of reappearing crashes. Time will tell.

This CStorm/A4000 system that was used to demo AOS4 - was it using PCI-busboard - if yes, was it Prometheus or Mediator?

Regarding the bugs.. were you able to replicate crashes? i.e. if you did this and this and it crashed.. after you had rebooted, could you make it crash again by doing the exact same thing? I'm just thinking about potential bug reports here.. thats what I'd like to try and do.

In reply to Comment 11 (James Carroll):
Well, yes and no. Because I didn't get a chance to spend so much time with the demomachine, I can't point out where the bugs are precily, this would take days of testing and observation. And I am not betatesting it either :)

What worries me a bit is that IBrowse doesn't work at all, and it seems pretty OS legally programmed(?) and should work well under proper emulation (as it does on Amithlon, MorphOS and UAE).
On the other hand, AWeb DID work.. but I don't know if it was AWeb PPC or 68k.

If there was more software to try, it would be easier to pinpoint the problemareas .. now it's more like speculation waiting Hyperion staff / betatesters to tell what is causing it, if they choose to do so.

So... (apparently.. I was not there myself)

OS4 do exists in some early form (good, progress from last year), but
needs a lot of work still to become useful for everyday system.

Amount of readiness and work required I can't comment withjout seeing
and using it myself. .

@Hooligan

I've experienced when porting AE4 to OS4 that a lot of minor bugs pop up which did go unnoticed on OS3 ('classic', Amithlon and UAE). The bugs were very real though, so OS4 just seems a bit more picky about it, which is good. It is very well possible that some minor bugs are present in programs as IBrowse and YAM that just don't occur on 68k. This has nothing to do with the quality or stability of the OS itself, but I agree it has impact on its usability. Also, using an 060+FPU executable on the interpretive emu is asking for trouble (if that was the case).

@Davy:

How does Audio Evolution behave on a CPPC? As this was ported to OS4 (and not using a lot of emulation or 68k anymore?), does it behave stable/fast?

@z5

Well, the more or less straight port from 68k did have those minor bugs I was telling about, so it was unstable in the beginning. Now I've resolved those issues, I can happily play with it without problems. I know there are still bugs left and I haven't tried everything, but it's not that it will crash due to the OS itself. The gfx speed is still a bit lacking, but that's because it's still 68k under interpretive emu. The speed benefit for AE4 would come mainly from native plug-ins, but I haven't ported them yet. I did run 2 tests outside of AE4 with the simple Amp plug-in and the complex Reverb plug-in. They were about 20% faster than their PowerUP equivalents which is ok.
