Genesi's MorphOS Developer Connection now presents itself in a new and fresh design and reflects Genesi's common website look and cooperate identity.

Also, parts of the site have undergone restructuring. For example, the links-section can now be found as sub-category of the member section (previously "addressbook").

Since MDC's initial opening nearly four months ago, lots of changes and improvements have taken place and new sections have been added: * MDC Library
The new library grows steadily and will be the primary source of technical information on MorphOS for developers.

* MDC Labs
The MDC Labs right now offer a growing database of detailed and standardized software compatibility tests in its "Software Compatibility" section to provide MorphOS users with information on the compatibility of third party software with MorphOS.

* My MDC
In this section, members of the MDC have control over all settings that affects their account, including the subscription to forums in the form of mailinglists. In the future, more settings and services are planned.

* Third party developer tools
Since two months, the MDC is home to a growing archive of third party developer tools. Among them are MIDI development tools, USB scanner driver sources, VHI example drivers, 3D and other development tools for C and Pascal.

Besides these tools, information and services, the MDC continues to support MorphOS developers with discussion groups, a global addressbook, the MorphOS SDK, project managment tools, event planner and much more. At the time of writing the MDC has 324 members interested in development or actively developing for MorphOS, building a unique, very helpful and supportive community focused on development for MorphOS.

About MorphOS Developer Connection

The MorphOS Developer Connection (MDC) is offered by Genesi as a free service for all developers interested in MorphOS. The MDC is a central interface between you, the developer, and Genesi that offers communication and support for your MorphOS projects. Genesi supports third party projects, active developers as well as new developers for MorphOS with an infrastructure for information and organization.

At the MDC, you can find documentation, the MorphOS Software Development Kit (SDK), a discussion forum, a project management system, as well as MDC sponsored events. In addition, you will find friendly and helpful people, other developers as well as Genesi staff to assist you in learning all about how to develop for MorphOS. Through the MDC, you will find the support base you need to turn your MorphOS projects into successful projects.

This "new and fresh" design and coorporate identity is awfully similar to the one of Apple. Their OS is an Amiga OS clone and their hardware is made to be compatible with both Amiga and Apple products. Is there anything Genesi has made that is original? Do they really have a coorporate identity of their own besides beeing similar or compatible with product x or y? If so, please tell me all about it because I really don't see it.

Just my "humble" opinion, flames goes to >NIL:

@Hagge and the other detractors:

It's a design known as "liquid". Yes, it's undoubtably inspired by Apples's "Aqua", but that can only be a tribute to whoever came up with that idea for Apple. It's clean and it works and many "liquid" themes have been implemented in a great many places.

Would it be better if they implemented a non-liquid theme that was completely original? Yes, I suppose so. However, I'd much rather see a liquid theme on a well designed professional looking site than a mish-mash of ideas on a chaotic patchwork of a website. No names no packdrill.

First time I have to clearly agree with Samface ;-) ...

Copying a design is one thing. But copying a corporate design for your own corporate design does basically the exact opposite of what corporate design should do: making your brand UNIQUE. Crouching close to a big player (and when it comes down to it a competitor) that is know for it's design won't help MorphOS a bit when they wanna leave a mark in the market. How are people supposed to recognize Genesi/MorphOS when they look like Apple/MacOS?? Not having considered this at all is a poor performance by the "designers". Their technical skills (photoshop etc.) might be excellent -- but when it comes to real design, THINKING comes first. This is called conception -- and right there and then the decision is made if the design will fail or succeed.

I actually don't understand customers eigher (in this case Genesi) why don't realize that. Their brand looking like someone elses should ring their alarms. Or are they just fooled by the "nice liquid looking" afterall?

If that's your cup of tea, why not just go ahead and buy a real iMac with the real MacOSX instead? More advanced, more available, more applications, more support, true original design... why would anyone ever want a far less advanced and exotic computer platform like the Pegasos if it's just a bad attempt at beeing alike?

I'd say that Genesi would have alot more to gain on beeing original rather than constantly reinventing the wheel.

Following your logic, no user would have a right to report bugs, no customer to complain about a certain product. Your can surely find a lot more examples yourself ...

More support if you stick with MacOS and they're willing (or able) to address the issues you have. "True original design" is arguable, really; it becomes 'classic' because it's a Mac, not the other way around. Note that the Cube was apparently designed perfectly to be killed if you ever left a CD or piece of paper over its top vent, and puck mice were obviously no winners.

> why would anyone ever want a far less advanced and exotic computer
> platform like the Pegasos if it's just a bad attempt at beeing alike?

Depends how 'bad' an attempt it is. I'd love to not have to hear or think another word about Aprils or Articia bugs (unless it's full documentation of what the issues were, along with supporting chipset documentation and so on), but if that episode can be left behind, a company that's willing to actively and openly support Linux, the free BSDs, and anyone else who comes to the party, that has a "music store" that doesn't impose DRM, that happens to market an intellectual-property-clean Amiga 'clone' OS for embedded use and those who prefer its approach to OS4's... Why would anyone want an Apple? It's not like they can design UIs anymore.

I'm not saying Genesi *is* that company, just that they have the opportunity to be. And anything that gets them moving and out of this constant useless infighting is good for the community as a whole.

> I'd say that Genesi would have alot more to gain on beeing original
> rather than constantly reinventing the wheel.

It's always a tradeoff. If you *just* reinvent the wheel, that's no good, but putting the tire on it was an improvement. *Any* computer company hitting the same markets as [Apple Dell HP ___] should try to be better than their competition, that's life. It's when things bog down in lawsuits and hazy he-said-she-said debates that things turn sour. (Goes equally Intel and Broadcom, Microsoft and Apple, SCO and The World as much as anything in our scene.)

If you read any of that as playing favorites *in* the current lawsuits and accusations, you're trying too hard; I'm too lazy to write a big disclaimer paragraph qualifying some things as best decided in court and noting that, barring this one last legal action, it looks like the disputes are ironed out enough, and the products 'mature' -- or rather, 'understood' -- enough that if "intellectual property" concerns ever do get raised again, it'll be an issue of licensing and annoyance, not a death knell. (In other words, MorphOS squeaked through however, Ambient resolves one of the major complaints if that ever was one, if the DE action counts as 'fair revenge' so be it, but after this round let's hope everyone stays far away from each other outside of standard customer relations if either goes to crossport on their own dime. The fewer strings either ties to the other, the fewer they'll be tempted to try to rip out of each other's backs.)

I'm almost positive that's completely outsourced from someone else, but I can't remember the name. I'll try to have a Google around for the manufacturer (hey, at some point it'll only cost as much as a *used* car), but I bet you can beat me to the name if you start scraping around for articles on the Parhelia trade-show setups.

I just had another look at Apple's pages and MDC, and I don't think they're really especially similar. Of course they both use a horizontal tab-like menu bar, but then so do a lot of sites. The color schemes are only slightly similar; as you can see, Apple doesn't just stick with the pale blue but uses other colors to highlight various pages. You might say that the Genesi sites have a rather style that's fairly common with corporate sites these days in regard to geaneral design rules, but I don't really think MDC or the other Genesi sites are "awfully similar" to Apple's. There are actually many differences, if you want to get specific. Originality in interface design has its merits, but so does predictability. Being generally pleasing and working well for the user is probably a higher priority than trying to stake out some new ground in visual design.

Alex, please note that there are no "liquid" elements all. No parts of www.pegasosppc.com, www.morphos.net or www.genesi.lu look anything like "glass" which is undoubtedly THE most important element of Apple's famous "Aqua" (= water -> "liquid") look. It is this specific element that gets copied all the time and was inspiration for many websites, icon sets, desktop themes, etc., yet NONE of the Genesi websites use it.

Funny, isn't it?

Now, with all Genesi websites lacking any "liquid"/"Aqua" parts, what is left?

Both companies use a white background for their websites which all have a navigation bar at the top and are optimized for a screen width of 800x600 (just like DELL.com, IBM.com and many other websites).

Apple's website uses two lines of tabs at the top. The upper one has about twice the size of the other and there are no graphical symbols whatsoever. Genesi's websites, on the other hand, have only a single navigation bar and include small icons for each site category. (Except for the MDC website which displays upto 3 navigation bars at the top and is also text-only.)

Moreover, Genesi's websites strictly use white and blue for all navigation buttons. On Apple.com, however, you will find colours such as green, violet or even yellow on various buttons. Apple often uses round edges for photos, Genesi does not but makes use of soft shadows. Additionally, Genesi has plenty of gradients on its websites whereas Apple prefers a plain flat-looking grey for various things. And the list goes on and on... and on... and on... (Just think about the different page layout schemes, etc.)

Do both companies' websites make heavy use of white? Yes. Does this make them look similar at a first glance? Indeed. But everyone who takes a look for more than 2 seconds, should see the difference between www.pegasosppc.com and www.apple.com quite easily.

> Copying a design is one thing. But copying a corporate design for your own

Let us compare the logos of a few major technology companies found on their websites as top banners:

http://www.microsoft.com/homepage/gif/bnr-microsoft.gif
---> blue background, white letters...

http://di.dell.com/images/global/masthead/masthead_dell3.gif
---> blue background, white letters...

http://www.ibm.com/i/v11/m/en/lanim.gif
---> blue background, white letters...

http://www.motorola.com/images/global/motologo_global.gif
---> blue background, white letters...

So, and now let's take a look at the following two logos:

http://images.genesi.lu/_menu/genesilogo.png
---> white background, blue letters...

http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/d03c42f22f2820/www.apple.com/server/images/nav_01.gif

QED indeed. But samface read some confused AC comments on Slashduh about pegasosppc.com being an apple.com ripoff, so now that's firmly rooted in his mind as part of the Evil Genesi Conspiracy to Produce And Sell Stuff (GASP!).

My complaint would be a slight lack of content, but then I'm not part of the Blue Troll Conspiracy (owning/using Pegasos/MorphOS), so I dunno what's available for registered developers. The design is excellent, and for fugg's sake, it's only been online for a day.
