The Pegasos Linux Community is now online. The PegXLin ISO can also be downloaded from there.

Nice! I have been looking forward to
the release of PegXLin. I have been
using the Mandrake 9.1 image on my
Radeon 8500 but PegXLin seems to be
a much more complete package so maybe
I will give MacOnLinux a try too... :)

We expect the Ready for IBM Technology approval on this distribution early next week and before the 15th.

Like all sub-sites that will fall under the Phoenix Developer Consortium umbrella this one has been built around Felix Schwarz's MorphOS Developer Connection codebase, which will continually expand to incorporate any needed features. All ___ Developer Connections under the Phoenix umbrella will soon share a common login and substantial mirroring and load sharing.

Much thanks to Felix, Genesi's Linux man Sven Luther, and graphician/webdesigner André Siegel to get so much done so quickly!

Oops,

I should mention that Pegasos download sites will become "Superbundles" for all the various OSes wherever possible, and that we are going to bring all accredited Pegasos User Groups (PUGs) inot the mix by providing any additional resources they should desire - along with a common "umbrella" gateway with channels to allow all PUGs to share ideas, information, promotions, tradeshow/presentation resources, and to work on common organizational concerns.

We have an incredible array of partners and friends gathering to bring vitality and support to the Pegasos platform - which indeed IS a CONCEPT! :  }

I'm using Debian on my 604e/200 PowerMac 8500/AV. I guess "it would take a while" since everything gets compiled during a Gentoo install on this machine. Also, updating a binary is lot faster (makes sense when you usually update a lot of Linuxes at once, like me), and uses less hard disk space, since you don't need to fetch the sources too. So while respecting Gentoo, i still think binary distributions are more usable for single users.

About the new site, only one thing: That's what i call SUPPORT! :) And there was no need to buy $50 coupons before! :D

Depends. A proper source-based distribution gives you the opportunity to do your build/configure/test/reconfigure cycles on a single box, then push binaries across your "deployment" in various ways. (NetBSD seems to have a high degree of documentation and convenience here, since the whole project has cross-compiling and and arch issues on their minds; FreeBSD/OpenBSD have 'make package' in ports, and 'make release' has been documented enough on all three now that even a moron like myself could figure out how to use it.)

If you mean multiple distro trees *on the same box* (because you like to multiboot, develop, whatever), then yeah, lounging around with binaries is more convenient, and often Good Enough for the average user just looking for a Windows replacement.

---

A quick Google shows that Portage should be up to par with creating binaries; from what I understand of their install process, it's mostly about bootstrapping the system to the point that you can *run* Portage, so I assume most of the same things are doable with enough headscratching involved. Things on the PPC side do sound plenty raw; I'm just making the point that, with many machines, a "source-based distro" doesn't have to imply constant recompiling on each one. ;)

The best balance is, of course, having both options; then you can choose your poison case by case. (As far as I know, Gentoo binary repositories lurk, though the project may not maintain 'official' ones(?), and you can sit there and make your own Debian packages from source, too.)

As to what anything requires in the install process... Yeah, Gentoo looks fiddly, but on the other hand, remember when we got by fine with "FORMAT DRIVE DF0:," "INSTALL" and "COPY?" Or for PC users, "FORMAT B: /S," "SYS B:?"

Always tradeoffs. Use whatever makes sense for the job, consolidate on single flexible tools when you can to not stretch yourself thin... Of course, that's how I manage to avoid Linux in its entirety; somehow or other, for the confessedly limited things I do, BSD's always had a way to get the job done.

Very interesting site, great work ppl :)

However, i already have PegXLin installed here,
it's realy great.

I miss one thing however, the 2.4.22 kernel and zImage
provided doesn't include tun/tap/masq. So no internet
with MacOnLinux, won't work.

I tried recompiling the kernel with support for tun/
tap, mascq, etc, but it doesn't work.

I had MOL with Internet running before, so i know
that it can work and what it needs to work.

I tried to contact the author, but he works like B.Gates
he doesn't provide help, unless i pay him.. :(

Apart from this fact it's great.

Bye,
Felix.

I also tried Pexlin.
It includes almost everything we may need (firewire, tvcard support ...).
However I had a major concern with the SCSI driver as it is doing IO errors very often. I tried with several different SCSI units and got the same problems.

I am not really interested to pay for Linux support as I prefer to support MorphOS.
If I ever reinstall linux I will have to go for another distrib or wait for a next PegXLin that would eventualy correct the problem.

Remenber PegXLin is a fork of Debian unstable ...

Maybe you could try to download 2.4.22 kernel from linux.pegasosppc.com, and compile it.

Hi Felix,

Im nothing like Bill Gates! he dosent even give the software away for free.
All i ask is for support to keep the product going.

Maybe you should make your own distro and realised how complicated it is, then tell me you dont need support.

Well, that is just the reason, why making a distribution as a 1-man-project appears kind of sensless
to me. Integration into Debian instead of forking off would have been a more promising effort IMHO.

Just my 2 Cents.

Ok, you got me there..
The fact everyone can download it for free is great! ;)

But everyone that would like to play with MOL, will
eventualy want to have internet on it.

At BA(P)S-2003 i spoke with a few people that bought
the superbundle just for PegXLin and they all thought
it was preconfigured and made easy to use MOL with
internet.

It was a bit dissapointing for them, apart from the fact
the pegxlin cd was burned with errors.

And i can reinstall debian manualy (again..) without
pegxlin and have mol working with internet, as i already
have done before, but nobody would bennefit from that,
and it will cost me much time, so i might just send you
some money and hope you make a solution for everyone.

Bye,
Felix..

Hi felix,

Im not aware of the read errors?, due to me not having internet for a few weeks i was unable upload my copy, so i sent them my cd via post, maybe it was scratched??.

i'll speak to genesis to see what happened.

sorry for the strong words, i just get annoyed when people complain all the time.

As far as mol is concerned Sven recompiled the CD for me, maybe he forgot to add the tun/tap modules?.
