Thought I hate all stupid post with "Hey, someone port this thanks", people port it if they are intrested or skip it if they are not. Anyway, the source code for Civilization: Call to power 2 from activision is released and available for download here. I remember playing civilization on my Amiga, and later colonization and they are both great games. I have no idea how these newer titles are but I would still apprectiate a game of colonization so it can't be that bad =)

Some PPC optimizations would really do good for Civ/Col games.. from time to time it takes AGES for the computer to make it's move =)

We can expect a port to Amiga/MorphOs ?

It exists also Free Source Civilization which is known as FreeCiv.

You can find it at www.freeciv.org

It emulates the behaviour of Civilization II, with some things improved, such as borderlines (implemented only in Civilization III original), ecc...

...and other things less (No movies, poor sound implementation)

You can always play FreeCiv with Amiga :) It works with gfx cards too. So it should work on Pegasos and Amigaone too.

Official Freeciv (GPL):
http://www.freeciv.org/

68kAmiga port (Source part of official CVS):
http://home.t-online.de/home/sebauer/freeciv_eng.html

MorphOS port (Where is the Source? as it is GPL.):
http://www.lehtoranta.net/freeciv/

I can't find the sourcecode for the MorphOS port ... does anyone know were it is?

Chances are it required no changes to compile for MorphOS, thus no sources are required (as they are hosted in the official CVS) .. don't know for sure though, why don't you ask the author of the port?

I respect greatly Freeciv effort, but having played Civ3 I wouldn't switch to FC very easily. The sound world and nice graphics add nice atmosphere to the game.

Sources must be available for request - you don't have to put sources online, but you have to give them to anyone who is interested in getting this code.

I've always wondered why people always want to have this and that ported to AmigaOS, instead of creating similar (not equal) programs based upon the features and such of a given foreign program.

Afterall why do you really need to spend years porting Mozilla to the Amiga, instead of just taking what's available on the Amiga side and try to make that better.. Seems like a far easier task in my eyes ;)

No, you are not required to mirror sources if they are already available elsewhere (in this case, a public CVS (and they prolly host nightly archives as well as release archives)) .. however should these sources for some reason disappear you are required to give sources yourself upon request...

Civilization is still one of my most favourite games. I still sometimes play the old Civilization on a PC (or emulator, fast enough for that)

But I never likes Civilization Call to Power. Much to much optical gimmicks that are annoying when playing. The old graphic was simple but appropriate for the game.

I also very like the Amiga-Version of FreeCiv...

CTP2 has some nice features like unit stacking. Civ 3 expansion also has that.
Plus I love the underwater cities.

In reply to Comment 13 (marcik):
You can only do that if you include a separate WRITTEN OFFER with the binary. The only people I've ever encountered who do that are Hyperion (who apparently thought it would help sales of their Quake II CDs) and some hardware manufacturers who include a micro Linux distribution in flash on their hardware.

People who make software available on web sites have an OBLIGATION by the terms of the GNU GPL to provide source code right there next to the binary. It doesn't make any sense not to, yet Amigans consistently can't get this right. Telling people "It pretty much worked out of CVS" is not consistent with the terms of the license you agreed to.

if you ask for it you will probaly get them, but of course they don't have to host it for you, they could even charge for the time and inconvenice for burning the cd with source code and post it to you.

does the GPL really say that? Why would you host and waste bandwidth for free? I don't think so.

Well, those FreeCiv sources for MorphOS are on my HD only right now :) But are available on request. Most of improvements done for MorphOS port are part of Amiga code base too. Rest of changes will be submitted when our sources are in sync again... probably when the next major FreeCiv version is out.

"does the GPL really say that? Why would you host and waste bandwidth for free? I don't think so."

Everyone who wants to distribute binaries must also provide source, that's equitable is it not? If you don't want to host source code, then simply do not provide binaries. If your bandwidth is expensive, find someone else to help deliver the binaries and sourcecode - for ports like Freeciv sometimes there is a section on the main site for 3rd party stuff.

You don't have to host the source code on your webserver. You don't have to distribute it with your binaries. You must, however, make the source code availabe upon request at a fee no more than the distributioncosts. Read section 3.b. and 3.c. of the GNU GPL.

You also have to not use a distribution method that is unworkable. Someone once tried to distribute GPL'd source only in the printed form, but that did not fly. The distribution method has to be one convenient to the requestor.

I don't think we'll see a specific Amiga-rework of Civ2. More work than Freeciv. Probably someone does an SDL port, which can then be ported to AmigaOS as well.

"Read section 3.b. and 3.c. of the GNU GPL."

Was that directed at me (the author of comment 22) ? I am writing in this thread in regard to binary ports of GPL'd software.

3(c) is not applicable to people who have created their own binaries, only people mirroring existing binaries, or giving copies to their friends.

3(b) isn't sensible if you're doing electronic distribution. In any case the ports under discussion do not include such a written offer.

Is out there a project to add sounds to Freeciv?

And by the way I consider:

Civ 1: A great game

Civ 2: A very great game

Call to power: A tricky unusable game (I tried the demo found on a magazine CD)

Civ 3: A not even playable game

Both last games have dirty feature of moving on map, bleach!

What a messy 3D map...

Does it already exists a MorphOS porting? Amazing!

And was it mentioned on the MorphOS site among other prorgams running on Peggy?

I wonder if the developer had submitted this info to Genesi...

I'm not sure what the problem with the map is supposed to be...I find Civ 3
to be quite playable, with some annoyances (too much corruption, the
inexplicable return to the silly "railroad everything in sight" of Civ 1
after having been much improved in Civ 2, other civilizations always want
to cancel trade routes even though it benefits THEM too...I actually
preferred the old "manual" way of sending out caravans).
