Thomas Frieden today posted some fresh news about OS4 wip on Amigaworld. There's something we're working on that we hope to show in France this weekend (so I'm not going to tell ya...won't spoil the surprise ). Other news: We're still working on the graphics system. The originally anticipated 2-3 weeks where of course 2-3 weeks of full-time work, but as always, something else comes your way and you have to rest some work and give priority to other... Things are slowly falling into place now. A lot of people are currently working on AmigaOne drivers (that's one of the biggest projects, anyway). And of course, everybody is still working on bits & pieces. Browsing through the recent upload notification mails on our beta list, I see some new PPC-native datatypes, several bugfixes to existing components (most of them are PPC now), some new PPC modules (not a lot... did I mention that most of them are PPC now, anyway ? I think I have only 4 68k modules remaining on my work installation, one of them graphics.library). One of the new "kernel" related features is a new ramlib (that's the component that is used to bring libraries into memory from disk): You might know that this is a prime candidate for crashing to do flakey library initialisation code. The new ramlib is now multi-threaded, meaning that the opening of libraries will be done in sub-processes. If one of those crashes, it's just removed by the mother process, improving system stablitiy a lot. Additionally, the latest exec includes a new memory tracking facility: You can now find out for each memory location if it's been allocated at all, and who allocated it. Very useful if you're debugging a program, or want to throw away all memory allocated by a given task. Sorry for the lack of news. There wasn't any big milestone reached, and with the frequent shows that's happening since some time, the overall progress isn't as visible anymore. On every show, you'll see more recent versions, more bits added, but nothing "spectacular". If you'll watch any footage from France, you'll probably notice that there where some speed improvemnts in the graphics sector even though the graphics.library they'll be showing is still the same as always.

Yup, That Mos... Filling in the parts they couldn't steal with the AmigaOS table scraps so they can cobble together an OS and call it the next computing revolution. Just another small fish in a big tank, more like algae eaters and other bottom feeders.

"Yes Nate, I'm anonymous. As someone else mentioned, freedom of speech is a great thing. Deal with it."

Freedom of spech is being able to say what you think and put your name to it.

Why are you scared?

"Well so you think every one is in for an revolution every time, I'm not,
I simply won't a improved system that is responsive and looks Grete,
I do not won't every thing changed, reshaped or moved around,
I and I do not wont an revolution for the sake of an revolution,"

I wish fleecy moss agreed with you.

Yes, both companies has a different view about which way to go and both are doings it share to split whats left of the Amiga community. At least I know that Genesi don't see the Amiga community as thier only customers. We see the result of all the trolling when there is a MorphOS or OS4 post.

Even if both companies would merge the OS into one, there would today be a lot of fights whoms code would be used for the different things, but just imagen if all the work hours that has been put into OS4 and MorphOS had been put into one OS (regadles of name), how much more advanced couldn't that have been.
For me as end-user, it would have given the largest possibility for proffit for all Amiga realted companies if there had been only one OS, instead to have to do work to make an AmigaOS4 and a MorphOS version.

We can be happy that OS updates mostly comes as booing bags and +0.2 / +0.1 version/OS updates, so we can comment the OS progress as it goes on. is more of evaluation then a revolution, and tank good the time frame for AmigaOS4.0 where not longer, just tow years inn development, The retro look of AmigaOS4.0 is some thing to think about, There are more then one man behind the design and look of AmigaOS, I think many of the key workings is set by AmigaOS4.0 from most basic and up.

about AmigaDE and AmigaOS, well I think AmigaDE apps will not be big part of the OS, mostly due to being designed for small mobile displays and not desktop sized screens,

How will like to play whit a 100x100 pixel email client on 1024x860 screen, :D LOL.

The Ami2D library is supposed to allow programs to run on a range of display sizes. I don't know how (or if) it handles things like menus being at the top of the screen on some OSes and attached to each window in others.

None of this stuff is ever demonstrated publically and the whole setup is so secretive that it is hardly surprising if they have very few developers.

Why am I scared? I'll tell you why. Because ours is a very small community, and people are very willing to put egos over business any day of the week; we've already seen someone selectively denying people upgrades, based on nothing more than personal opinion, and logic bombs put in drivers to deter "pirates". I think Genesi's (and AInc's) antics are very amusing, but I'm not blind enough not to realize that someday I might buy a computer from them. Based on everything I've seen and heard, I have no doubts that if Genesi knew who I was, they would "oops" send me broken hardware and "oops" put me at the back of the queue for anything I might want from them, even if that would negatively affect their bottom line. AInc? we'll see if they ever get to sell anything on their own, then I'll make up my mind about them ;)

In a nutshell, by being anonymous I grant myself that which others would deny.

That's delusional. Nobody at the shipping or support end really has the time OR inclination disrupt their work schedules playing sick games based on waht you might say on forums. Truth is, people who attach their names/fulltime nicks to their honestly-held posts sometimes are very critical, but those opinions are not going to cause anything but agreement, reappraisal or disagreement.

Those who are intentionally posting crap have a reason to always wear the cloak of Anonymity, however: how embarrassing to actually have that drivel associated with one's name! Ironically, it's obvious that many of them would like to believe they are being witty or clever or bold, but refuse to own up to their immense intelligence, courage, and sagacity ;  }

Actually, the ones who disagree most vehemently tend not not want to buy anything from the ones they're disagreeing with. If I was a BAF, I'd just say "#### Genesi, I'm getting an AmigaOne and I don't care if they hate my guts." However, what I see is a promising line of computers that's being held back by a company with idiotic policies. When I stop seeing things like Bill Buck baiting Ben Hermans on the forums, I will get off the fence on Genesi's side. I don't remember ever seeing Bill Gates getting personal with Scott McNealy, even though it's no secret that he wishes Sun would just go away.

I'm being OT here, but just remember that when people post anonymously, they are saying what they really think, without fear of reprisal. Of course, like you said, it's delusional and irrational to think that the people on these boards would take the time to hunt someone down and terrorize him for posting insults. But, anonymous posters(and that includes handles like mine - unless you use your full name you are hiding your identity, exceptions for people like "greenboy" and "fleecy" who will answer to those names in person) are cynics. Free speech prevents governments from persecuting people for their views, but it does not stop persecution from corporations, advertisers, college professors, building contractors, or your fellow citizens, as we see here in the US (and that's from both the left and right side of an issue.) While some anonymous posters are just trolling, being cute with their childish comments, some are just generally on-guard at all times, paranoid and suspicious of their neighbors. Fear is a nasty monkey.

@Nate Downes:

> Frankly, many of Hyperions decisions for OS4 seem to be more of a "MorphOS
> does this, so we will do the opposite" from my perspective.
Thats a very 'unique' POV you have! The concise reply you asked for:

> Picasso96 vs CyberGraphX, for good example.
P96 was already the standard in OS3.9 & widely used by Amithlon/etc. Isn't CGX
"owned" by the guy behind MorphOS (Ralph)? That alone is reason enough for OS4
to avoid it.

> Full version of ReAction vs MUI for another.
Errr, OS4 provides MUI *and* ReAction. Yes, MUI is depreciated, but
ClassAct/Reaction has been the GUI of choice since OS3.5 .

Does MorphOS support ClassAct or ReAction? I forget.

> Evolving the API's vs. Locking up the API's and generating a new superset
> seperate from the original.
The whole point of OS4 is to improve the existing OS. Whereas MorphOS's whole
point is to eventually replace the AmigaOS, and just have it running in a box.

They are simply two different approaches, and there are some good reasons for
thinking the OS4 approach will be both faster & more elegant. But lets just be
happy we have the choice huh?

> That kind of thing. This always troubled me, as that makes OS4 look more
> reactionary than revolutionary to me.
Funny, I always thought of MorphOS in that way! ;-)
