Genesi today announced that RJ Mical will assume an evaluation role for Genesi. RJ Mical was a co-inventor of the Atari Lynx handheld game system and the 3DO entertainment console, and was also head of software engineering at Ericsson Red Jade. Most recently, RJ has been the Chief Architect for the Fathammer mobile game engine and continues today to serve as a Director. RJ will be making a full assessment of the Pegasos and MorphOS and prepare a plan to assist Genesi to move the Pegasos into the world of mobile devices.

RJ will be meeting with Pegasos and MorphOS Developers and Users this coming week in Helsinki. He will be in Finland on Fathammer business.

"RJ Mical was a co-inventor of the Atari Lynx handheld game system and the 3DO entertainment console"

Not to mention his involvement in the creation of the Amiga - Intuition!

Great to see him working with Genesi.

I´d like to quote Jay Miner:

"RJ Mical pretty much did it all himself. He was holed up for three weeks (!) and came out once to ask Carl Sassenrath about message ports. That's it, really! He wrote Intuition and went on to do the graphics package, Graphicraft, as no one else could do it right."

You can´t argue with that man, really you can´t.

It's great news that Genesi is getting lots of the old & experienced people involved - what exactly will his "evaluation" role be?

2) Poke at it for a bit
3) Figure out whether it's worth porting their engine to MOS

I'd like to be less skeptical (sp?) but I am in(capable|ebriated).

This is the right start to show to some people that the Amiga spirit is not ths AmigaTm trademark.
Rj is one of the father of the real Amiga and now is joining a team that is working to continue the Amiga spirit in a manner a bit better than AmigaInc.

No I'm shore MOS has more of the Atari spirit? Just kidding.

The spirit of the platform has more about users
using the platform the the platform it self,
being creative having the tools and the community.

I think the close ties between the developers and the users,
is a bit unique on the AmigaOS/MoprhOS forums compared to others.

Walks out onto the stage, and stands behind the lone table under the spotlight.

Places three walnut shell halves onto the table--one marked Genesi, one marked Amiga, Inc., and one marked SomeOtherBrand.

Holds up a tiny Boing Ball for the audience to see. It is marked "Amiga's Future". Places tiny Boing Ball under one of the shell halves, and mixes all three halves very quickly, around and around, in and out, looping and doing the figure-8.

Lifts up the Genesi half: nothing.

Lifts up the SomeOtherBrand half: nothing.

Lifts up the Amiga, Inc. half: everything. :-)

Actually I've set up a team full of old Amiga talents. The company name's Dream On Studio. We develop games on handheld devices and so far only on GBA.

The problem of the GBA : its business model. A company like mine is obliged to work with a publisher who has enough money to contract with Nintendo about the manufacturing of the VERY expensives cartridges. At the end of the day, Dream On Studio earns only a fraction of the business money and its efforts are not very well payed.
The reason ? We can't sell our products freely and must do the games of other people (the publishers) with Nintendo taking money on it.

What's a millions users market worth if developers can't have the real fruits of their efforts ?

A handheld device with the efficency an elegance potential of AmigaOS/Morphos would be something great. Have a look on TapWare new device called Zodiac. Definitely way to go...

Dream On Studio in its form or another will be ready for suh an opportunity with an "Amiga" connection (I already forgot about the DE...)

In reply to Comment 28 (Ben Yoris):
It where unlike that AmigaOS4.0 will run on anything other then PPC, mostly due to x number of lines of optimized PPC assembler code i the new exec kernel, so to make AmigaOS an PDA system, we need to find a PPC CPU that can be used for PDA's,

So I started snooping around the net and found this link:

<http://news.com.com/2100-1001-274324.html?tag=nl>

The IBM PowerPC 405LP, some thing like that might help it, the problem whit PDA is small displays running Amiga OS as it will not be dabble, mostly due to the size of gadgets and window frames, AmigaOS is about 12mb so you put in on flash-disk whit no problem, the biggest challenge for AmigaOS4.0 as PDA system is the memory usage, mostly due to the JIT.

I might expect some similar problems for MOS,

the biggest problem about AmigaDE is that it has zero Amiga recognition,

If we look at WindowsCE we find that there is not one WindowsCE it one for PowerPC, Alfa, HP etc. So in other words the target market becomes where small, It's not where realistic.

Screen-space can be safed by using specialy adapted MUI-skins, and a slighly

I've had more than a clue. :-)

R.J. Mical on board the competition to Amiga. That one is a riot. I'm still laughing. :D Good luck to you guys, but I prefer Amiga. I don't even care if Carl Sassenrath joins up with Genesi, or the others do. I know that in the end, the 'name' is required, and certain people over there are going to begrudgingly know it before long. Now, if my prognostication here makes them rebel and not want the name, GREAT! :D Good riddance. But I know where the path is for Amiga, and it's with AMIGA.

If Genesi have success with MorphOS and Pegasos and other products and OSes, good. That's what Amiga was about. I know well about it not being about a name, insofar as the passion and dedication and creativity go. That was never lost on me. In fact, I do exactly that with my own operating system efforts. But there are some who prefer Amiga (like I do) and know its path (like I do), that just don't care about Genesi/MorphOS, no matter what 'names' they attach :)

Those 'names' should be working with Amiga, Inc. But hey, R.J. Mical working with Genesi? No different from 3D0 or the other companies he's worked at. See what I mean?

You're close. Now just get them all under the Amiga, Inc. umbrella.

If you think Amiga, Inc. is dead, I'll remind you of the phoenix who rose from ASHES. ;-P

I'll also remind you of deception/lies (if not fraud) perpetrated in the past which ultimately resulted in the AMIGA OS and AMIGA machines.

I'll stay on the side of the AMIGA name. I'm against Genesi. The products, who knows...maybe they would make a nice addition to the AMIGA family of products.

We are not talking of "having" an old version of REBOL. We are talking of making it more central to our work, putting it in the hands of MorphOS and other alternative-OS developers. This in turn gives REBOL Technologies a reason to be involved as a PARTNER, to increase the scope of REBOL development, dovetailing it in with products and projects.

>>But perhaps this is another news item, working with Carl Sassenrath ; }

>Perhaps another spam item, yes. :) Blanket the AMIGA-related message forums and utilizing AMIGA-notables to promote the...oh wait, it's not AMIGA OS.

Dig it: Carl and RJ just don't CARE about the name of the Amiga. They don't care about working with companies that can't afford T-shirts. They care about seeing their ideas go out into the world. They care about financial prospects. They are willig to RISK (that's what they have always done) - but they know that those who risk always do better when they choose partners who can afford to assemble talent, ideas, with some of those partners making products.

These are not Amiga notables promoting something - these are Amiga notables who are interested in BUILDING something, just as they have always been. That takes some realistic weighing of the odds, and some complementary assets when selecting partners and sharing business plans.

...I might also repeat what just about any moderator of any site I've ever posted on in the old neighborhood has said, about their sites supporting AROS, MorphOS, etc news and discussion. But I won't. Even most of the dullest minds realize what these moderators and site owners have said. I'll note however that they haven't yet discouraged people from mentioning non-existent not-even-started 64-bit OSes, though their relevance is perhaps illusory at best ;  }

In reply to Comment 40 (Kjetil):
Well, it is true that there is something to be said about the 'forefathers' of Amiga working again on an OS or computer hardware--especially, when working together with one another, once again.

It's kind of like a band...say, The Eagles, or The Beatles, or whatever your favorite happens to be which created a lot of landmark songs in their career. They break up, get new members, maybe even all of the members get replaced, and original members go off on their own to do things. Those who go off to create things elsewhere, may really create good songs by themselves, or with others. And, the law of probabilities must include the instances where the individuals wind up creating something BETTER than what was created with the original members. But, even so, it still won't be the original, or have the same flavor.

Regarding Amiga, it's a sad thing Jay Miner passed away. The original team can now *never* be collected together again. All you've got is the legacy he left, if that can be remembered. At the same time, a few other things have changed--and I believe Miner was more hardware than software. The realitiy with the hardware itself has changed over the years...to where HE probably wouldn't even approach things the same way (but who can say but him).

Also in the mix: "Amiga, Inc.", before the incarnation of December 1999 / January 2000, never pursued the path for long, before coming under the care of Commodore, and becoming "Commodore-Amiga". So, in truth, and so far, about the only thing we know of the original entity is monetary problems and a very unique dream (one that manifested through parent companies--nearly all of which declared bankruptcy). It sounds tragic, but if those monetary problems are faced and defeated, then what? :) I mean, for the original entity, reborn in January 2000.

Refresher, http://s87767106.onlinehome.us/fox/EpicPoems/prelude.html

Maybe there is some sleight of hand going on, maybe there isn't. I tend to think Genesi and Amiga will merge somehow. Maybe goes like this: Genesi obtains the venture capital, the past Amiga luminaries, builds up a decent business plan and gets things out the door and then picks up the Amiga name, morphing into a company that couldn't have gotten that same venture capital due to either reputation or distrust or whatever. OR, maybe like this: Genesi gets sued to oblivion and those once supporting it have to gravitate back to Amiga. OR, perhaps it 1983 joysticks all over again ;-)

They can't really want Amiga dead, now can they? After all, they're using Amiga. The products are catering to Amigans. The products work with Amiga OS and software. It's Amiga this and Amiga that, and if Amiga died (again), well...how would they sell their stuff? "Well, that company is gone now, and while our products can aid you in so many new ways, we can also let you run your old Amiga programs."??

Cutting through the B.S., there are just some things that are unresolved and need resolution between those with the gripes and Amiga, Inc. Whatever it is, some people are not getting what they want, or are not happy with the way things are. Some of it may be vindictive, some of it may be a 'no choice' matter, some of it may be the 'better idea' or 'better way' position; or combination. BUT...it's definitely still alive and kicking, and far from over. :) Birth pangs. Evolution.

This is one time I say: just let the chips fly, and the wind whip up into a very strong gale. Whatever is left standing is meant to be.

I wonder...Is Genesi going to pursue x86/64, or stick with PPC?
How would things change if Amiga, Inc. announced a brand new OS effort, which has nothing to do with what Hyperion is doing for them?

It's clear you were regarding my operating system there, but only with the most fallacious remarks conceived from vapid ignorance. :-P But mine is merely a hobby os. It exists, and was started in 2001. Relevant? Only insofar as ANN is obviously supportive of multiple OSes. Amiga compatible? I've actually talked with Amiga, Inc. about it already. You better think (more), before you are really "I am."

This isn't a band, and it is not a reunion. It's business. If we came from Amiga backgrounds, it does not mean that we have some overwhelming nostalgia to recreate the old team with a few ringers thrown in where necessary, to do a Faded Past Glories roadshow tour.

Amiga Inc itself is not interesting as a parnter. It is not able to pay wages, has a bad track record of not acknowledging realities like the abscence of phone lines, offices, addresses, has not paid taxes, has cancelled insurance and benefits packages cancelled without notification, has not fulfilled contracts, and has often lied about the situations until they are so exposed that even most duller minds will finally acknowledge that pizza can not be delivered there.

What kind of a partner is THAT? I'd hardly call that "alive and kicking" - it's hiding and dissembling AT BEST, for quite some time now.

There might be some assets in having the name itself (though I personally consider them rather slight). If the company cannot run an honest promotion with partners agreeing at the time to honor a coupon, or actually get PAID for DE licences as per contract, $4.50 per, why would anyone want to merge with them, or partner with them? More likely, someone would wait for a firesale, hoping maybe even that all the debt burden is paid beforehand.

To EyeAm : the name Amiga means nothing else than old, crap, vaporware, repeatly taken over, and so on.

Look what Infogrames made out of the brand Atari : that's something again, even if it's only video games.

Of course, some nostalgic people may be interested in an hypothetic return of the name Amiga on the front scene, but Amiga Inc screwed everything up and now there are only ashes around the name "Amiga".
