Here you can find new Demo version 0.9(beta) of an interesting program: the Amiga Midi/Audio Sequencer called HD-Rec. Developers for plugins and further software for HD-REC are welcome. I forwarded these news from amiganews. Some info from the homesite of HD-REC

HD-Rec is a powerful MIDI/audio sequencer for Amiga OS. It combines comfortable MIDI notation with extensive audio editing within the same application, running always 100% synchron. To achieve this, HD-Rec takes full advantage of the AHI system for audio and the CAMD system for MIDI input and output. Features:

Very user friendly and intuitive to use

16 bit / 11.025-96.0 kHz non-destructive audio recording & editing, not limited by RAM

Audio realtime effects (reverb, delay, chorus, compressor...)

Bars&Pipes style notator for MIDI elements

Audiomaster style editor for audio elements

Uses AHI for audio and CAMD for MIDI

Powerful plugin system for MIDI/audio applications like softsynths or patcheditors

256 tracks (MIDI/audio)

Supports AIFF, WAV, MAUD, RAW, CDDA, 8SVX, MP3, MOD and MIDI files

The demo seems to be "coming soon".

In the mean time, the screen shots are impressive. This is going to be a very good program, assuming it is stable and bug free.

Why is it that Amiga programmers can write a whole program single handed, while a similar PC program would need a team of 30?

I'm not sure this is about Amiga versus PC - but more likely because in one case, it's a personal project and the author wants it to succeed and look nice and work well, whereas on the other hand, for maybe 25 out of these 30, it's just "a job", and the other 5 get caught up in stupid meetings and management decisions.

(Do I sound bitter? :)

There are a lot of people doing Windows apps with teams of one. But the companies with a "team of 30" actually have extensive websites, distribution, connection to advanced OS services, and they write, support, and update wider-ranging applications - ie the programs tend to address deeper levels of industry- or user-desired functionality.

It's a no-brainer to use Windows or Mac for professional audio and music production. We have a long way to go before any set of applications from our 'hood can attract those people, and it probably has a lot to do with the support for audio in those OSes. I figure Linux is getting closer too.

But congrats to people around here that are doing things to improve the status of our local faves. That in turn could affect other development where it is needed.

" Why is it that Amiga programmers can write a whole program single handed, while a similar PC program would need a team of 30"

And you have proof to back up this stupid nonsensical claim, right Don?

The program which is the subject of this thread does look very interesting, and from the look of it the author has done a good job.

HOWEVER, Don, I'd like you to point us to a SINGLE Amiga programmer who writes, maintains and updates a program with the exact same levels of power, complexity and functionality as Logic Audio Platinum 6, please? (Not that EMagic have a team of 30 people dedicated to that project either, but then again let's not mention that because we don't want to point out ALL the falacies in Don's spurious claim).

More power to the autor of HD-REC, but let's not get lost of the kind of rubbish Don is coming out with - his claims help no-one.

That is probably the heart of the matter.

In reply to Comment 8 (Don Cox):
Sorry Don. But you are seriously deluded. The music applications on other platforms are far superior, and the better ones by the better companies not only enjoy distribution and third-party ties that help the users of the apps keep current, but they SET the trends.

This is NOT the fault of programmers from this 'hood; it's just that a certain threshhold has yet to be crossed that makes it easier for audio programmers to address all the needs and desires (and peripheral gear) that musicians and producers actually use, in a fashion that impresses people who've been in the industry for ages. Even hobbyist musicians want to get their hands on much more than we have ever had access to in this 'hood.

But I have to congratulate the programmer here for taking steps in the right direction! : }

I was delighted to learn as I was playing with HD-REC a couple weeks ago, that it's CAMD support allows me to use the built-in MIDI sounds of the SBLive! card I'm using with Amithlon. The quality of the sounds isn't that good, but it's fun to play around with!

I owned all versions of Bars&Pipes and loved the way the program operates for MIDI. The new "open source" version is getting better, but doesn't quite work properly with Amithlon (the note palettes, etc, corrupt when selected and the CAMD support doesn't use my audio card's internal sounds).

Still, it's nice to see this type of software coming back to Amiga (and working well with emulated machines).

Allthough a lot of the icons look errm, very beta. (old uggly magicwb stuff).
But that is just a minor detail, I very much look forward to the release!
Seems to be a job very nicely done!

A friend and myself started work about two months ago on exactly this type of program. I think I'll just Email the author of this program and suggest n AROS port instead, since it looks so cool!

I love the plugin interface.

Problems of B'n'P? Or problems from Amithlon...

If it is the first program creating problem you can e-mail Alfred Faust...

For the second (Amithlon), I hope someone could make a patch... someday...

“The demo seems to be "coming soon".”

Has been since June, as far as I can tell. On schedule and etc. Maybe in 2004 the author will finish it. Maybe he won't.

“In the mean time, the screen shots are impressive. This is going to be a very good program, assuming it is stable and bug free.”

That's some conclusion to draw from a few screen shots.

“Why is it that Amiga programmers can write a whole program single handed, while a similar PC program would need a team of 30?”

First of all I think it's unlikely that "a similar PC program would need a team of 30" and doubt you have anything to offer in support of that conjecture except spite. Secondly PC users don't want to wait 5 years for a beta of a by-now obsolete application, whereas it seems Amigans are prepared to wait indefinitely, since for them it's only a hobby anyway.

Good idea...

...and maybe fully AROS SDK support by any AROS Developer only for him,

-the supreme maker of HD-Rec-

+ AROS installation & SDK support 24/24h on-line only for him...

and

+ (also only for him) phone help 24/24h calling your home, Oh brave dear Matt

While HD REC is a reasonably good attempt for native AOS application, it wouldn’t even threat Cakewalk Sonar XL. The 16bit audio editing is considered to be archaic for "professional" work (illustrated as an example).

It wouldn’t even use the full power of my SB Audigy2 ZS 7.1** card (i.e. capable of DVD Audio quality).

Yes, 16-bit audio may not be used by the pro audio & cinema houses, which have all gone 24 bit....but lets get this program working well in 16 bit first, and then worry about 24-bit audio. I, for one, would LOVE this program even in 16-bit....let's not forget that for about TWENTY YEARS *all* professional audio was done in 16-bit....and a lot of that is still AMAZING when it comes to the final test (the consumer's ears). In fact, most people cannot tell the difference between 16 and 24 bit audio....and 16 bit audio is still being used in many home studios, semi-pro studios, and even some pro studios. C'mon, yes, 24-bit audio is great, but 16-bit audio is pretty DARN GOOD.
