Sadly it's only in german, but very interesting. I can only hope we don't have to draw conclusions out of this for OS4 development. :-(

and here the babelfish translation (german->english)

It actually ran quite well on my old iBook.

I feel perhaps I am missing the point; the Babelfish stops working about halfway through the article. :(

In reply to Comment 2 (Ted, the Generic Guy):
Conclusion ("Fazit"):

"After procrastinating for a month, I wanted to get it all over with. Even though I had calmed down [after the reviewer's initial disappointment], the following can be established: Ten elephants couldn't make me want to start 'Gorky 17' again, let alone play it through. Because of that, this might be my so far most unbalanced and unobjective test report. But what other conclusions could this review possibly come to? 'Gorky 17' is as good as unplayable on the Mac, at the best it's a 'very early beta', regardless of whether it's on MacOS X or 9. And at that price! Pure insolence! Too bad that the porting was made so crudely. You can still scent from this data garbage that 'Gorky 17' actually is not a bad game. Until this is thoroughly fixed/improved, I can't recommend this product to anyone."

Well, what's there to say? Unlike when there's an "Amiga" sticker somewhere, you can't have blinkered zealots do the reviews! :'D

Imagine the look on their faces when the mac users buy OS4 only to find out their old Mac software doesn't run on it ;)

A friend of mine tested Gorky demo on his powermac. Also he was convinced that Gorky is not worth buying (I do not remember if it was because of the user interface or what, but anyway).

btw... I thought this was old and discussed topic?

Was this thread started just to distract Hyperion from their AOS4 work?

FYI: resistance is futile ! ;)

*IF* i remember correctly, Hyperion is doing the Linux port, they did *NOT* do the mac port, that was done by Epic.

As for gameplay, download the demo (assuming there is one) and try it ;)

Cheers

Correct. It's completely pointless to discuss OS4 in relation to a Mac port by Epic not being optimal ;-)

In reply to Comment 10 (Olegil):
@Amon_Re & Olegil

Gorky17 MacOS port was made by Steffen Häuser of Hyperion. Apparently he is very proud of his work.

See http://www.amigafuture.de/interactive/interview/steffenchatlog.php
Steffen Häuser: "21:40:37 MagicSN Und Gorky fuer MacOS (fuer e.p.i.c)."

And http://www.amiga-news.de/en/news/AN-2003-02-00202-EN.html
Ben Hermans: "During the OS4 development cycle we also ported two Mac games (Nobody Lives Forever and Gorky 17), which brought in revenue."

I wonder if the quality stays the same with Steffen's OS4 projects?

In reply to Comment 11 (ManicSN):
Ah, I stand corrected. Ok, so e.p.i.c did the port _officially_, but Hyperion did all the work?

Intelesting.

To be quite honest I haven't actually seen anything more than screenshots of the game, so I cannot say if the gameplay is bad on Mac or not.

I'm looking forward to the Linux version, though. Any day now.

I still don't think gameplay on a Mac port has anything to do with OS4, though. ;-)

In reply to Comment 11 (ManicSN):
Ah ok, didn't know that bit, sorry.

But like Olegil, i've not played the game, so i've got no clue whatsoever what it's all about.
I did see it run on Linux tho, looked nice :)

As for Steffen's work on AOS4, i guess we'll have to wait & see, basing myself on the things i used in the past from him i'm sure it'll be alright.

Cheers

The review must have been written by the red trolls. How else can you explain that a game of that exceptional quality was reviewed so badly?!

I'm sure genisi is behind all this!!!!!!!

<ikir> I agree!!!!! nice theory :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Gorky17 was project work done by Hyperion for epic. OS4 is project work done by
Hyperion for Amiga Inc. So there is relevance here.

not really. most of his gripes seem to stem from the publishing house
(ie those who make the packaging and do the distributing) and
from real inadequecies and weaknesses of MacOS (especially X)

In reply to Comment 17 (Alan LM Buxey):
if the robust, mature, unix based, with full hardware accelerated OpenGL implementation of OS X is something not capable of games like Gorky17, that doesn't bode well for OS 4.

But I don't actually look at it that way, some people just aren't happy with some game I never heard of....is how I look at it. We'll judge OS4 games on their merits, not the merits of Mac ports.

It would be interesting to know what versions (um, 'minor?') of OS X it was developed and tested on, versus what the reviewer was using.

Apple has this way of, um... being Apple, y'know?
