Hyperion Entertainment and the OS 4.0 development team are pleased to announce that OS4 development has now sufficiently advanced for a comprehensive Developer Pre-release of Amiga OS 4.0 to be distributed to all current AmigaOne owners shortly after the New Year.
In view of the fact that quite a few of you reminded us that you do not have broadband internet access, the original idea to offer an initial version of OS 4.0 for download was abandoned in favor of an "easy to install", self-contained distribution on CD.
Whilst this will obviously entail more cost to Hyperion and require more time for duplication and distribution, the upside is that we will be able to provide developers with everything they need to start developing for OS 4.0.
The developer material will include sample source-code, an initial version of the AmigaOS 4.0 SDK as well as native OS 4.0 compilers (GCC 2.95.3, GCC 3.4 and VBCC) and cross-compilers for various platforms (Linux x86/PCC, Mac OS X etc.).
The Developer Pre-release will require an upgrade of the AmigaOne firmware which was bumped from U-Boot 0.1.1 to U-Boot 1.0 and which is currently undergoing final testing.
Further details will be announced shortly.

The fact that you are still here, 10 years after the demise of Commodore, has been a tremendous encouragement to us during these 2 years of laborious development.

How much is the CD & shipping? Why not make ISO downloads available aswell?
Why is it called Developer Pre-release? Is it not recommended for normal end-users?
Anyway, it's nice to see some progress, finally. |

I'll give you the "Most Powerfull" for now, but AROS is pretty stinking fast running fully native on my Athlon 3200+ with no emulation at all :D

You think Christmas would get in the way of petty insults in the Amiga community? I'd be suprised if Judgement Day or the end of the world would...someone would find a terminal connected to the net somehow.
Nice to see developer material available to people. Shame only the privilaged few can run it. What about releasing the developer material to more people with some way of contacting those A1 owners who are willing to do some beta testing? |

How much do they charge? I was under the impression that you could trade in your ROM for an erasable one...? But then, I am not the guy to ask for the commercial side of things...
Anyway, once you have an upgradeable ROM, you can overwrite it with the next update. |

I'm confused I'd think an early-bird system would come with a warranty to fix or replace anything not caused by the end user at least until 30 days after the offical OS was released. Ugh, how horrid for those early early-bird purchases to get a system that's incompatible and be told to spend more money. It appears that Amiga has made future boards with a flash writeable BIOS because they realized they'd be changing the BIOS. My 2 cents is a free retrofit for those users whose systems now won't run AmigaOS due to the BIOS not being able to be upgraded. |

Well I know I own an Earlybird
It has bin known for a long time that I can only run linux on the system for now,
the BIOS where supposed to be flashed whit a BIOS version for AmigaOS4.0,
prior to the releases of the OS, so one might expect this things.
As a side note; PC mainboard sold separately do not always contained the latest flash,
what make this interesting, is that ROM is not a flashable version? or is it?
I'm quite happy to restive a beta version whit SDK,
even if I expected a full version of the OS. |

Hope you had a good christmas ! :-)
I can only talk for myself and ny company GGS-Data.
We are offering costumers the following these very simple choices;
1; Get the update and reflash self, cost nothing.
2; Send the chip for reprogramming, a small charge for this work have to be charged.
3; Buy a new chip with a newer version of firmware. Cost for the new chip will be charged.
As for the Developer Pre-release OS 4 CD, or what it will be called :-), doesn't matter so very much from my thoughts, we will happely send this out to all costumers of earlybirdsystem without any cost for the costumer, if no cost will be charged on GGS-Data. |

I've never ever seen a PC motherboard with a non-flash BIOS ROM. Maybe in the days of the 386/early 486 they were not flashable, but they always are today.
They USED to be EPROM chips - which meant you could program them with the right equipment (ie a UV exposure box and an EPROM programmer), I recall a few with EEPROM (which was expensive)... now they're all FLASH chips even though they still refer to it as a ROM.
I predict that in 5 years time, the PC BIOS as it's known now will be replaced, probably by OpenFirmware. |

You might be right about the BIOS being replaced by Uboot or OpenFirmeware, or maybe an other type of boot init code, Energy Start BIOS and other BIOS types have done the job quite good in the past, they only lack some imagination, they are quite standard, config save, and use, I think Uboot provides more power even so, I have not used the uboot any other way then the standards bios, whit the exception of setting up boot args for Linux, so one might say that uboot provides an combination of lilo and BIOS features, combined whit an where simplistic shell, |

I was kind of thinking the Amiga OS 4.0 would be out by now. Weren't they putting finishing touches on it in October? I wonder if the question "done by Christmas" was ever asked? The question in my mind is not whether it will be complete by a certain holiday, but whether it will be complete by the time Amiga Inc is dissolved as a corporation. That, to me, is significant. If Amiga Inc is gone, then Hyperion doesn't have to pay them a royalty of some sort, right?
Some day, we will all look back on these hard times and laugh. In the meantime, don't be sore for the folks who are already laughing. It is their way of dealing with the disappointment. I have no doubt in my mind that every one of the "storm crow" Amiga pessimists was at one point a fond, faithful Amiga enthusiast.

Why not send a EPROM/Flash ROM with the "developer pre release" cd ?
I hope we dont get a hassle with "who will pay for this and that" between eyetech/hyperion and the dealers, that would be BAD !
I recently ordered my earlybird so i REALLY hope i got a flash rom onboard, if not it better be in the OS4 package.
but still, have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR ! |
