Aaah.. nice race between YAM and SimpleMail. YAM still has my vote but I am willing to change for .. ???

Aaaaargh, 0.21 for some obscure reason has stopped attaching your name as sender, it just shows your email address now, wtf? :P

(Other than that annoying glitch, it's great though).

I'm not sure, i have to check the real stability before, but i guess that with the html and Imap support Simplemail has surpassed Yam.

Jens Langner is very busy now (MUI 3.9 for OS4) and the others Yam developers are not helping him very much.

I hate to say this but it does not instill me with great confidence for MUI 3.9 for OS4 if Jens is working on it. Yes I know I should be encouraging him but after repeatedly failed attempts to get the crash on reply bug fixed in YAM, I don't rate Jens' debugging skills very highly.

And I wasn't the only one who experienced this bug - so I know it's not just my machine.

That was the one YAM bug that I couldn't tolerate anymore and I switched to SimpleMail. I must admit there is no YAM feature I have really missed. Yes Simplemail is lacking in a few areas like a decent text editor, but at least it is showing real progress with each release and all serious bugs are getting fixed as they are discovered.

Well Done Sebastian. Roll on the next version.

I haven't had the reply bug.
I like Yam, honestly i can say that the innovations made in these years are alittle bit too conservative (no new features), but i'm optimistic for the future.
For Yam, think that pratically he's working alone on a code made by somone else, because as i said the other developers haven't helped him alot.
That's not easy.

Running this program on MOS1.4. So far is working good. I'm importing
all my YAM folders into it and am giving the Spam filtering stuff a
try. Overall it is looking good!

I think that the bug you mentioned is very hard to track down.

I'm most impressed with the spam filtering. :) I imported my YAM
deleted folder and marked which ones were spam until I was up to about
350 messages marked as spam. Then I selected the remaining 500 or so
messages and did the check spam routine. It worked very good. I think
it missed on 3 of the messages. Works very good. Will there be a PPC
version?

Don't get me wrong, I used to like YAM and I was a user for years, but at some point the crash on Reply bug got introduced. I mentioned it every now and again on the ML and other users would confirm the existance of the bug, but Jens replied once to all my posts and basically said he had been unable to reproduce it and closed the bug off - never to be mentioned again despite reminders that it hadn't really been fixed. I too trawled through the changelogs and found a reference loosely related to a temporary files fix (to do with naming if I recall correctly) but this was not the infinite loop on reply bug (to state the problem correctly).

This is what would happen. You would read a mail and decide to reply. Sometimes the reply function would work as expected. Othertimes and this was quite random, YAM would go into an infinite loop appending line after line of some text (quotes of original mail text IIRC) to the temporary edit file (forget what it used be called now) until the partition holding the YAM temp folder filled up (if you left it running long enough). The only way out would be to reboot. And then you get a validate partition wait, and then you could restart all your other programs you was using and maybe try to reply to your message again if you felt brave enough. If it happened again you just grit your teeth and went through all that again and sometimes it just worked - so it was not message specific. After a while you learnt that the only surefire way of replying to a message without the threat of the bug striking was to copy the original text to the clipboard, create a new message, paste in the original text, manually put in the >'s to show you were quoting, and then type your reply and send it. Hardly elegant and user friendly. Can you blame me for switching as soon as a viable alternative came around? And despite Jens' efforts (which are no doubt considerable) the only way I will consider him for my good books is if he manages to findthe bug that causes this behaviour and fixes it. Until then I will see him as somewhat of an amateur.

Sorry, I should have said, the last version of YAM I used was 2.3 and that still had the bug, after I switched to SimpleMail I never used YAM properly again. So if the bug really did get fixed after I stopped using it, then I take back the things I said above, but I am still on the YAM ML and I have occasionally had a peek at what is going on in YAM world and I haven't been inspired enough to want to switch back.
