Great News! Hot off the Press! Genesi and Cloanto announced today that they entered into an agreement to develop a port of Cloanto's Personal Paint for MorphOS. Personal Paint is the leading palette-based graphics package for the Amiga computers, and is still preferred by enthusiasts, video artists, game developers and professionals alike for its set of powerful and user friendly features which have no counterpart on any platform. Under the new agreement, Cloanto is sharing the source code with Genesi, who will assist in the port to its exciting PowerPC-based computing platform. Personal Paint will be bundled with MorphOS.

Weird... I tried using Personal Paint recently and it seemed be at the same level of MS Paint. Seems like I was unable to find the "Enable Cool Stuff" option. What am I missing? (other than intelligence; I already know about that...)

Is that all... ? So you can customize 256 different values in a lookup table, and apply convolution matrices and stuff...

Hmm... well, that palette manipulation is probably a killer feature, as trying to do palette work with the gimp (aptly named), for example, is like stabbing yourself with a butter knife.

Shrug.

MS Paint is included with the OS and will never be taken serious not like Personal paint, PP was great in the 90s but seriously keeping the Amiga software stuck in the 90s really is not the way to go.

I can understand retro painting or whatever for old times sake but to keep a platform in the 90s is stupid.

Seems like a waste of time to me.

PPiant might have been great for it's time but nowadays it's next to useless. Considering PPiant does not support anything above 256 colours what is it any use for? Not even Icons are 256 colours these days.

Great news 'bbrv'. It makes me so happy to see this community re-animated. A lot of people in various places told me that the interest into Pegasos/MorphOS has so drastically increased. That's definately the way to go. Your efforts into this community also increased interests in other projects such as AROS or even the AOS4 people. Specially those who left the community years ago are now eyeing back to the plattform that once were their roots.

Thanks a lot!

You probably missed the anim-GIF, the palette merge, the color reduction, all these things you can't do with true color only software? :-)

Palette and true color are different worlds, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Personal Paint remains IMHO the best palette-based program, on any platform.

Beginning work on Personal Paint also implies that there is a future beyond 1997, or whenever the last major version was released. If that is not good news...

I wouldn't disparage a new choice. Having it is better than not having it. I personally dislike PPaint and find it frustrating and useless. But I think the same of old versions of lightwave too. Once you get used to Photoshop, a person gets fairly critical.

in a pinch, I'll use the GIMP though.

Shit! You guys are so negative it makes me puke!

PPaint/DPaint and the likes are a sought after app that is missing on
all the other platforms, hell, game producers even emulate the Amiga
to be able to use DPaint even today. It is not just a retro thing.
It is still quite usefull in SOME areas.

Why do you moan when a company that left the Amiga still shows so much
intrest and "gives" us a product? Shame on you..

PPaint ain't Photoshop, it was never intended to be.

Right. Even Sony still uses Personal Paint for game development (ever wondered why support for Playstation TIM was included in Personal Paint? :-)...

Yeah, I know that Amigas running DPaint were used throughout the PlayStation 1 days for creating textures, and are still used in some companies (though not so many as a couple of years ago) for GBA work. I knew one artist who, when faced with his work PC, resorted to bringing in his A1200 from home :)

There's nothing better for pixel work.

I have a Pegasos for quite a while now, i'm using the PegasosII with G4,
and i don't realy need a MOS version of PPaint, the current version runs
fine on my system for my needs.

I need Digibooster and ProtrackerII or HDRec to run normal and some cool
emulators for PS/PS2 or N64, give amidog a peg ppl :)

(I thought PPaint was made with blitzbasic, is that also going to be MOS?:)

Bye,
Felix.

I'm so tired reading such stupid comments... It's really great to have
this software for modern computer, we needed a bitmap gfx application
managing palettes, low resolution and that would be easy to work with
pixels. As a long time graphician, I really missed it, particularly
because of the animation part.

Some are really to stupid to understand the use of Paint...
Thanks a lot to Cloanto and Genesi !!

PS : no, it was not really usable under MOS ;-).

I think this is good news, all in all. I know there are people who feel that time has passed the 8-bit paint programs by, and to a large extent that is true. However, for some jobs those 24bit+ paint/effects programs are like trying to use a chainsaw to cut out paper-dolls.

PPaint does it's job, and does it well. Thanks to all involved.

PPaint is the main reason I bought and use cloanto's UAE distribution, which comes with ppaint ready installed. PPaint is great. The "C export" alone makes it worth while, and it's the easiest to use bitmap editor I've ever used.

I hope it will be brought out for OS4 as well, when that's out.

Hi all

Personally this wouldn't interest me at all, but then I never got into the whole gif-animation thing.

What WOULD interest me is a native MOS port of ArtEffect. Under MOS1.4 something went wrong and it has become slower and tempramental in respects. Under 1.3 it flew and was much better. But a PPC MOS version would Rock.

*However* - I can understand people wanting this program ported so IMO it is still a very good idea and I'll also say thanks to the programs creators and porters for their work.

TTFN!
Bifford

This is nice, even if it's not the on the edge graphics program, but it will do it's job, which hardly Gimp of fxPaint does IMHO. For those who don't need a pixelwise graphics program, I have only one thing to say to you, DON'T USE IT!

Would be nice if they do include more to PP than what the Amiga version had, but we have to wait and see.

I think you are looking for an "effects" program. Personal Paint is a paint program, for creating 8 bit images from scratch.

It is particularly useful for making images for use as GIF files on web pages, especially diagrams and charts, but also buttons, arrows etc.

Its main fault, IMO, is the lack of a Light Table or any automatic perspective moves for animation. This is where ProMotion (Windows program) and DPaint are better.

OTOH PPaint has excellent features for handling text, including animated text.

Photoshop and PPaint are programs with completely different uses and origins.

If you want an imitation of Photoshop, try Art Effect.

PPaint is a palette based paint program, Photoshop is a 24-bit photo retouching/compositing program.

That would be useful too. A platform needs a variety of graphics programs for different types of work.

What Art Effect needs is layer masks, as in Photoshop i.e. a separate alpha channel for each layer. A separate stencil for each layer too would help (Photoshop doesn't have stencils AFAIK.)

Well, aside from the bad grammar, you seem to be missing the point...I mean,
you can't even draw a simple circle in Photoshop (without going through more

That said, the word "exciting" was used in this press release.
