Here you can find the latest version of Jamiga: http://sourceforge.net/projects/jamiga The latest version is alpha 0.0.1 Notes: The first JAmiga Release in 2004. This one features improved stability, some JITting and it allows the first AWT Frame to open :) Don't expect other AWT Apps to run just yet!

Sigh. Why is it so hard to provide a one liner description of what your software does? If I wanted to play guessing games, I'd go somewhere else.

If you don't know what it is already, or if you didn't understand it (mentioning AWT should have been more than an hint for you), you're probably not interested in it anyway.

True.

But he still have a point.
Many news items concerning programs doesn't say what the program actually does.

It only takes a few minutes to do a short description of the program, what it can do now and what it is planned to do later.

<On-topic>
Great to see development continued, hope someday to be able to use it (it surely ain't of any use to me yet :)

It is indeed great to see progress on this project. This is one of the things the Amiga platform needs most.

Getting the AWT to work well will be a big task, so best wishes to the coders.

Talk about timing ... I was searching for JAmiga recent progress a couple of days ago only to be disappointed by the project's seemingly stagnation. Keep up the good work - Java is the best thing that can happen to Amiga.

Is 0.0.1 just overly careful or a true description of the state of this project? Any idea/timeframe when this Java will be fully usable and run major Java apps? Weeks, months, years?

I disagree. I think that the statement is fair - it should be in the interest of the original developer to attract as many users as possible to his or her piece of software. "AWT" doesn't mean anything for a person not knowing anything about Java.

In the end, I think this discussion is about whether or not AmigaOS technology is meant for ordinary people or computer scientists (just like the popular attitudes in the Linux communities).

Developers: write good software - then promote it just as good!

That's my point: if you don't know about Java, then you're not intersted in Java. Java is for developers, not normal users, normal users are pointed to java anyway, when they need to be.

Would you like that every time an announcement about AROS were made, you'd also have to read _what_ is AROS? Don't think so.

It's good to see that Java is eventually coming our way! Is Jamiga based on any existing JVM? Is it a port or a project written from scratch?

You don't _have_ to read all text you can get on your monitor. If it's useless information for you, it doesn't mean it would be same for everyone else

So you would indeed like me to paste

"AROS is a portable and free desktop operating system aiming at being compatible with AmigaOS 3.1, while improving on it in many areas. The source code is available under an open source license, which allows anyone to freely improve upon it."

every time I post a news about AROS? Well, I bet most wouldn't agree with you :-) How about, insteas, simply following the <a href="http://www.aros.org/>link</a>? The answer to all your questions, and even more, is always there.

I think a line about each program or project is good, alternatively a link to it's homepage is good enough, if it has one.

For AROS the line could be:
AROS, Amiga Research OS, is an AmigaOS clone for x86 aiming at OS3.1 API compatibility.

For Jamiga:
Jamiga is a project aiming at giving Java to Amiga.

Doesn't have to be 5-10-50 lines!

"It's good that they're excited about their project, but why announce updates when its not really useful yet?"

Because it gives people outside the team a chance to try it out and report problems.

It might even attract another coder to the team.

And with such an important project, any news is of interest.

In reply to Comment 18 (Deniil 715):
"AROS, Amiga Research OS, is an AmigaOS clone for x86 aiming at OS3.1 API compatibility"

Which is not exactely true.
As true as:
"Linux is an Unix clone for x86 ..."

Even so AROS is mainly developed on X86 it does not mean it aims ONLY at being a clone for x86.

For example:

- Parts of AROS have been used in MorphOS.
- A 68k build could be done for the people who wish to stay on 68k (or even for people using 68k emulators wishing to execute 68k programs).
- A coldfire build could be made for the Nueron HW.
- If a new revolutionary CPU ever come AROS could be ported to it quickly.

Tx to the opensource project AROS has a great potential to participate in several projects.
IMHO AROS would need a portable 68k emu (which may be an hard task) to get more momentum and get more support.

I think you're making a good and fair statement here. Your examples are informative, short and yet objective. That's professional promotion. Lack of knowledge does not imply, nor suggest ignorance - keep in mind that we've all been kids. You have to start somewhere. A humble attitude towards potential users not having the same insight in your software as every rocket scientist in this community has is in my opinion crucial if you want to strengthen your user base.

And what has that to do with anything ? Amiga companies are small, so what ? Java is not Amiga-only language or something like that. Java IS actually wery popular in the mainstream world these days. Java-environment and technology IS direct competitor to Microsoft products. There is lot's of Java technologies which are directly competing with Microsoft. Java is open system, which can be ported to Amiga, or to any other system, and it sure is good that there is project like JAmiga. Project like that sure is not waste of time. Java can bring mainstream alot closer to Amiga and that would be really good for the Amiga.

Anybody have any further information on the current status of the MorphOS Java project (which at one time included Havemose, apparently)?

Why? You already have a perfectly good OS? Besides, AROS
is of no use, (as of now) anyway.

But yes, maybe the MOS people could start coding for
AROS, but I don't see that happening, they'll probably
much rather code for MOS. Who can blame them?

I also wish that whoever posts about some new prog or update to one would give a small bit of data as to what the heck it is. Many of us work long hours online and do not habve time to more than check in once in awhile. Could be wrong but it seems only the unemployed or underemployed have time to keep up with all on newsgroups. Thanks
