From IBM's website

"The Open Desktop Workstation is based upon the Genesi Pegasos, a CHRP based motherboard. Integrating selected Open Firmware and running multiple (15+) operating systems, the Workstation is an extremely efficient, very expandable hardware solution for personal and business computer requirements.

The Open Desktop Workstation is available as a turnkey, built to order solution with a number of configuration packages available, including multiple distributions of open-source Linux, and OpenBSD. Other options are available on request.

The combined reference designs and open standards give the Open Desktop Workstation the flexibility to unleash PowerPC onto the desktops of the workplace and the server racks of the small business. The desktop version allows the workplace to have a level of conformity between servers and office equipment reducing the total technology overhead. Providing a natural path of progression from user to system administration the desktop version can minimize outside training requirements. Rack mount versions provide the small business and educators with servers that not only perform, but perform silently, consuming less power, and with the reliability expected from PowerPC.

Running several distributions of Linux out of the box along with OpenBSD, the Open Desktop Workstation will be capable of running future Linux distributions by virtue of the open standards adopted by its design. Being customizable to particular needs, the Open Desktop Workstation may be used with its own closed source Operating System for enterprises that require it.

The Open Desktop Workstation, whether using closed or open source systems, is available in both "do it yourself" and as a complete turnkey system built to the specifications of many enterprises both large and small.

This announce is BS.

If you search a bit on for example : http://www.developer.ibm.com/solutions/isv/igssg.nsf/list/bycompanyname/86256B7C0019CE5B86256C71006DE610?OpenDocument

you'll see that most of the text (if not all) have been cut'n pasted from other solutions like for example : Teron CX, Teron PX, Articia S etc...

Who is taking us for fools ?

Very promising - compliments to the various teams involved in getting this far. I think this puts into perspective earlier announcements of Genesi courting IBM; maybe those who dismissed it at the time would like to reconsider their words...

Of course, maybe they're just not "suave"* enough to appreciate this...

Somebody been playing with their thesaurus again, eh?

@Ben Yoris

Sorry, but should I understand that you weren't clever enough what the IBM Global Solutions Directory is? It's just a part of the IBM web site that list the solutions provided by 3rd parties that use an IBM technology. Almost NONE of the solutions listed are directly developped/endorsed by IBM. The only link with IBM they have is that they use a IBM technology, there is quite none of them that are supported via a partnership or something like that by IBM.

So this kind of informations on both IBM Global Solutions Directory or the Motorola equivalent section, have almost NOTHING to do with IBM and Motorola and are rarely directly marketed/supported by them. This is more a a marketing tool used by IBM and/or Motorola to show that third parties use their technologies.

That's why for IBM or Motorola, MAI Logic or Genesi or Marvell or any other company using IBM or Motorola technologies are NOTHING more than simple customers and there is no real partnership between them. If you thought that this "announcement" was meaning that Genesi is in partnership with IBM and/or Motorola, then try to be more intelligent next time.

This announcement is only that they will offer a new product that will use IBM and/or Motorola technologies. And as nothing to do with any partnership between them and IBM/Motorola.

So if you understand and read the information cleverly and not stupidly, then you can't affirm it's hot air. It may be and may be not. It depends if they will do this product or not.

But in the sens you misundertood it, of course a partnership with IBM/Motorola is hot air as it doesn't exist and as this announcement doesn't mean that, it was even NEVER announced in any way.

While only being incrementally substantive, Ben, it does seem to be a little more than "hot air"; on the other hand, I can't see much substance in your "cut-and-paste" claim; care to elucidate?

In reply to Comment 17 (Gregg):
I agree Gregg.

While on the one hand, IBM supports their partners (customers of ppc chips) and this is little more than that type of recognition.

On the other hand, its not just vapor. I mean they produced a ppc motherboard, and they are an IBM customer. So its a fitting tribute to the
actual achievement, which did occur.

I think these types of announcements are just fine on a slow news day.

"I'm not clever enough and while I'm typing thousands of Pegasos and Aones are being produced and sold to Motorola and IBM."

Are you really stupid or have you reduced reading capabilities?

I said EXACTLY the CONTRARY of that. In these announcement, there is NOTHING that can make anyone conclude that there is a REAL partnership between IBM/Motorola and Genesi or Eyetech/MAI Logic.

So basicly I said exactly that they are NOT selling thousand of Pegasos and AOnes to Motorola and IBM and that there is nothing in the announcement that can make you conclude that.

Next time learn to read instead of interpreting what I said as the exact contrary of what I really said.

There is NOTHING in THESE ANNOUNCEMENT that INDICATE A RELATIONSHIP between IBM/MOTOROLA and GENESI and/or EYETECH/MAI LOGIC. These is A SIMPLE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION on the pages of IBM/Motorola website dedicaced to customers that make use of IBM/MOTOROLA products for their products. So in the announcement you can ONLY conclude that GENESI and/or EYETECH/MAI LOGIC are CUSTOMERS of IBM/MOTOROLA, NOTHING MORE!
