What are the main differences between the "alpha" and "beta" versions?

I guess everyone interested in OS4 has already read it on their favourite AmigaInc. website.

No need to misuse ann as a free advertising service!

Same can be applied to all the other factions i guess, why announce AROS or MOS news when we can read it on their respective websites.

Hell, why do we even need ANN.LU?
You're a genius!

"A number of enhancements have been added since we publicly demonstrated AOS4 Alpha."

I'm confused now. OS4 on Tour was demoing an alpha and not OS4 beta? If that was an alpha why is it a beta, not an alpha? Is there someone who can tell the difference?

Generally an alpha version still has features missing, while a beta has all features present and more or less working but with some bugs.

Really it is up to the programmers to decide when they think something is near enough to a finished version to be called a beta. Anyway, this event will show a version that is more complete and less buggy than before.

In practical terms, a version that makes the AmigaOne finally usable (once they ship the CDs). No operating system is ever finished.

Because all the other products do exist and they deserve to be advertised.

Advertising for this vapour product called OS4 goes on since 2001 and it is annoying me since quite some time now, so I just had to tell the world here on ann.

In reply to Comment 13 (Anonymous):
But then, to show everyone that this product isn't just vapour is the intent of this show to begin with, you know. Besides, these shows are usually more than just a demonstration of a yet to be released product, it's also a chance for user groups, magazines, distributors, etc. to meet each other as well as demonstrate themselves to the local community. I'm sorry that it bothers you, but surely you can understand that everyone doesn't agree that this would be a bad thing?

Coz all Hyperion and Eyetech ally jupmp your post, I will answer you: no, no Gfx native subsystem for the Aone version of Aos4.
Simply in beta is the Os4 version for Phase5 PPC accelerators, while there are a lot of Os4 part that are incomplete on Aone (so it's why it must be called "alpha version").

It's interesting to see how Alan Buxey and Co jump the post because they know the "beta" status of Aos4 ...

Whatever a shit, AMonRe.

The same words was used in Frebuary 2002 to announce the beta version of Aos4 in Cebit show.
Now the vapour consortium continue on its path adding simply 2 or 3 "news" to say out "AmigaOS will be released soon. In 2 months!"

I invite all people to see the Pegasos2 running Mos 1.4 in all events ouhere.
Sure it will not be delayed "other 2 - 3 months" (Ben H. TM).

Oh, give me a break. Do you have to put MOS into every thread? Why does it always have to be a war between AmigaOS and MorphOS? Small dick complex, Eva?
Windows is running fine here as it is on the computers of many ANN readers, but they're looking at alternatives, not because they think that these alternatives have more features than Windows.

You're partially correct. graphics.library is now PPC native, however Picasso96 is still being worked on.

OS4 has been useable by BETA testers on classic hardware for some time now.
No current beta testers have run 'alpha' code on their systems (hence the
name of their status). someone came up with the 'alpha' tag after OS4 beta arrived on the AmigaONE - i guess the thinking being that if its BETA , then all the old tested stuff must have been alpha :-|

I think alpha means the internal version thats being worked on before its entered beta-testing. When people start beta-testing it, then it can be labelled a beta. Thats my interpretation of things anyway.

I remember the good old days, when an operating system didn't need to be demonstrated, the user got it with their machine!
Better yet, when you bought a dev board, a beta OS came with it.. it sort of made sense way back when.
When can A1 dev board owners do this?
