What's the differance between Beta and Alpha versions, and what does it mean for the final release for all of us to still waiting to get our hand on it?
NC/SC Amiga User Group OS4 Demo : Comment 5 of 34ANN.lu

In reply to Comment 4 (Dale):
Alpha = Still features missing
Beta = All features implemented, the only thing remaining before release is bugtesting

What it means to the user is that he/she will be able to see and try the complete and full version at these kind of shows, and that the release is getting closer, even if the exact date is still uncertain.

" Beta = All features implemented, the only thing remaining before release is bugtesting "

Afaik the pre-release will not have JIT, SNAP and will lack quite many other features as well.

The alpha/beta/pre-release buzzwords here seem to me to be quite random. I was pretty convinced that the OS4 tour featured an OS4 beta. But I may be mistaken.

I think the OS4 on tour will have the beta, with JIT etc, but the prerelease would be the alpha.

In reply to Comment 6 (Emeric SH):
no, you were correct. it was the Beta version of OS4 on Classic hardware.
at that point, the AmigaOne version was Alpha. this is the cause of
this confusion, in that the AmigaONE is now in 'Beta' - and both tracks
(AmigaONE and Classic) are running level now.

as for Beta being finished with just bug testing. no, thats not true. theres always the insertion of extra features, as well as the merging of modules
which are not completed (and are 'alpha' themselves) - its not the whole
OS being treated as one entity here. various folk are taking serious looks
at each module..and each module has its own alpha/beta/gamma status

and as one wise soul already stated on other threads, the OS is never final and complete. if it could ever be, we'd have the worlds first secure, bug free and
future proof OS. /me not think so ;-)

Bah who cares alpha beta gamma delta epsilon, I JUST WANT MY OS4! :D
I don't care what stage it's in, just let me have it goddangit!

I don't see why they just don't give it to us right now, and lets us download new ISO's every so often. WHO CARES if it doesn't completely work? At least we could follow the progress! We just won't keep any important data on it, we just want to play with the baby.

Pre-release does not need to be same as internal beta for the internal betatesters.

This is not an open source, Linux nor some form of hobby project, it's a commercial product that they intend to sell. As such, the paying customers has certain expectations in regards of functionality and stability. You don't see Apple nor Microsoft release alpha nor beta versions of their products that their customers can play with while waiting for the final release, now do you?

WTF? Was that supposed to be a rhetorical question?
Answer: Hell YES, you do!
Though not solely for "playing" with, but for preparing the market and the application developers. Which is an absolute necessity, BTW.

No you don't see beta versions of Windows, Word or Excel etc. If you think how "good" those are, then those really should be called beta or even alpha.

Obviously, since I've already paid for it.

As such, the paying customers has certain expectations in regards of functionality and stability.

Didn't I just say that I DIDN'T have those expectations since I know fully well it's not done yet?

A much higher proportion of Amiga users is likely to write programs than users of other OSes, even Linux.

Actually microsoft have released beta versions of windows for users to play with for a number of years, to help them search for bugs and test the beta on a large range of hardware. Have a closer look at their website.

On a different topic: The JIT in OS4 is complete but not integrated (not a difficult job to do apparently though its not been done yet) but you can load programs with it by calling the programs with a command line command. This was posted Rogue (I think - one of the OS4 devs anyway!) on AW.

Which is why the prerelease will be made available to AmigaOne Earlybird owners as well, it will just go through this initial phase of internal beta testing first.

However, normal end users, ie not developers, is recommended to wait for the final release. This is perfectly normal product development practice.

That's what they've been saying for years, and is tangential, "how much longer I can wait" isn't the issue.

Oh bullshit. We're talking about *AMIGA USERS* not Soccer-Mom Windows&AOL users. (who, BTW *CAN* get a windows beta by simply asking for it)

There isn't a single AmigaOne owner out there that wouldn't appreciate access to the beta AmigaOS4 to play with on our hibernating-in-linux-land AmigaOnes.

If Hyperion would take my advice, maybe Genesi wouldn't have managed to bleed off so many people on to another platform. Look how many people ran to the competitor. Too much of this damn "let them eat cake" crap being thrown around.

i'm sure you know that the initial offering will be a single CD as an "OS4 preview" (lets call it a final beta) with the real finished OS4.0 arriving
a 'short time' later.

many people were suprised at the 'beta of OS4 to go to AmigaONE owners' idea - but those hardware owning folk have been supportive and waiting.

Speaking of which, the Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems Customer Preview Program was launched today.

A time-limited beta of the next Windows XP is just a download away, free of charge. Just like with previous Windows previews it's not an "SDK" and you don't have to be a "third party application developer" to click on the link or order the CD.
