Holy Smokes! The Source Code to the Amiga Video Toaster Flyer has started to come out! www.openvideotoaster.org

Looks like they need images, graphics and more people joining and talking in their forums.

Excellent news.

Hope that we will see an official port of VideoToaster 2 pci for AmigaOne computers.

An adaptation of the new Videotoaster software for AOS4 will be great, and allow the new Amiga be newly used on studios with the same performance of PcWindows and Mac video stations.

Just parts are ASM. But I wouldn't bet a penny on 'gcc-compilability' of that C code. Big efforts needed. Also C++ redesign.

The AmigaOne doesnt have enough horsepower to run the PCI toaster.

Finally, a topic worth discussing! Thanks, Bill and Newtek and Aaron. Hey Bill, not bad for a right-wing extremist like yourself! </moo bunny humor>

Is there any point, besides nostalgia and hobby coding, to build upon this source to bring these programs up to speed with newer NLE technologies, or would that probably require building from scratch?

What horsepower do you need ?
Can this open source project could lead to newtek new products support on new Amiga / Amiga like products ?

This isn't source code for the new PCI stuff, it's "classic" Amiga toaster stuff which is older.

The VT 2/3 require a seriously decked out system. The original Peg couldn't handle it either.

IIRC, the 3 needs something akin to a Xeon to operate.

I believe the code for the new PCI Toaster is also mostly in assembler - x86, of course.

Don't know if it's would be worthwhile, but someone could conceivably attempt to port the software to run on a Amiga Classic + PPC. Possibly running OS4 or MOS.

Actually not much of it is in assembler, some of the low level toaster init and stuff is, but most of it is in C. Code for both the toaster and the flyer are included, plus I released all the sources for my Toaster and Flyer programs as part of this program.

How hard would it be to code software that
would allow a more modern computer to control
the switcher so one could feed and control the
Amiga Toaster from Windoz or Mac OS. One could
still use classic Toasters systems for real
time FX. One still has to render many of the
DVE style effects the Toaster can do on the
"modern" NLE packages I've had to use.

Hiya

For what its worth, I worked at a place in Burbank, in 2000, that
built up systems equipped with Toaster2 PCI cards. They were hot for
the time, like single or dual Pentium 600 PeeCees, with PC133 RAM, and
of course were all SCSIfast/wide. These boxes couldn't do anything
that a 1.2GHz G4 with Altivec couldn't do-except for choke on Win2K of
course ;-)

Of course the effects couldn't render in realtime, but why couldn't a
single GHz class G4 (using Altivec of course) handle it if a single
GHz class Athlon could do so?

Keep in mind that comparing what an x86 box can do and saying 'oh the
Peg (or A1) couldn't do that!' isn't always a fair comparison. PPC is
much more efficient, clock for clock, plus it has the Altivec option.
I think an original Peg could make a very useful system for this.

Its a moot point though, since analog video is going away soon. And
for the average consumer to wedding video photographer, a firewire
based solution will look and work better anyway-way fewer cables, no
timebase to worry about, no analog signal degradation and so on.
Digital is the way to go.

Now all we need is a firewire stack ;-)

Firewire sucks ;-)

It shouldn't be difficult. NewTek already did
this back in the day for Macintosh users. There
was a linking kit that allowed the Mac to control
the Toaster.

As for comparing the Toaster2000/4000's realtime
fx to rendering ones on new computers, there's
a huge difference in quality. The Toaster has
low quality DVE's. Unless I was doing something
live, I'd probably not use the Toaster.

The composite only i/o was always a drawback too.
The SVHS add-on boards helped but component &
firewire would have been better. The Broadcaster
Elite offered a breakout box with component.
The DraCo offered composite/SVHS/DV.

Open source for the Amiga Toaster could allow
some ambitious programmers to make the Toaster
turn out some new tricks.

In reply to Comment 17 (Jaeson Koszarsky):
Quite true about the DVE effects being lower
quality than rendered. However, as I live switcher
the old skool Toaster would still ROCK. I don't
know how cheap conventional live switching gear
has gotten, but I imagine one could pick up a
working 3.1 Toaster 2000 set-up (with a at least
one TBC) much cheaper. I think that would allow
switching between at least 2 live (analog) sources.

As for R/T transcoding analog to DV, there is always
Dazzle (or some other analog to Firewire DV bridge).
