Some of you might be aware that I signed a full-time employment contract with Genesi S.à.r.l. in Luxembourg to start December 15th 2003. I didn't make an official announcement on ANN because I didn't plan (and expect) it to change anything as far as ANN was/is concerned. I spent most of January 2004 telecommuting from the United States, but unfortunately, not everything worked out the way I had expected it to, and yesterday I handed in my resignation with Genesi. Next Monday, I will be starting at a new job in Luxembourg. Once more, this should not influence ANN in any major way, except that my available time might be more limited, and I will probably not be able to do any moderations or updates during the day.

Exactly as Stevey says, ann.lu is the only forum that comes close to allowing freedom of speech, depspite the anonymous trollers, and so on. Keep going and good luck on your next ad-venture! ;) |

I disagree. If you are trying to decide whether to commit yourself to a new computer platform, such as Pegasos, you want to know whether the company is well managed and stable, or whether you are likely to be left holding an orphan computer.
Personally, I would also want to know how good the documentation of the product is. |

I disagree. If you are trying to decide whether to commit yourself to a new computer platform, such as Pegasos, you want to know whether the company is well managed and stable, or whether you are likely to be left holding an orphan computer.
Well, you probably have an idea of the success rate of tech start-ups; almost any new computer platform has a fairly good chance of failing, so if your concern is avoiding orphans, you should stick to mainstream options. This is the ragged edge we're involved with here, more ragged at times than we'd like. That Genesi has had extenuating circumstances to deal with in the last several months is well-known (and check out bbrv's "More Details soon on the Pretory site" for some specifics). The Pegasos project hasn't been directly affected, but surely the Pretory business has been a distraction for Genesi management.
I don't see how the details of specific employee situations are the business of any outsider, potential customer or otherwise. What is important for customers and investors is having an impression of solid management. If the company can carry out its business properly, it doesn't matter if, behind the scenes, the original staff stays on forever or if employees come and go on a daily basis. In other words, its the results that count. So we'll see.
Personally, I would also want to know how good the documentation of the product is.
Like a lot of small operations working on fast-developing projects, the documentation is lagging way behind the software and hardware. It's more important to pay engineers than tech writers at this point in time. Also I think there's a certain "corporate culture" shift that has to be made as the project becomes more a public product and less the pet of techies. Again, we'll see what happens.

Even if it is a false impression?
" If the company can carry out its business properly, it doesn't matter if, behind the scenes, the original staff stays on forever or if employees come and go on a daily basis."
In practice, it isn't possible to run a business well with a high turnover of staff. The best businesses keep their staff for decades.
The reasons for people leaving are also relevant. For example, a company where the management have no technical knowledge but insist on making technical decisions. (Commodore). |

Second, take you all a look at it with some perspective: what did Buck need? The support of as many amigans as possible. And a good move to achieve this was to hire two of the most respected webmasters in the Amiga platform, from two of the most known Amiga related websites. Well, now it seem that he doesn't need them anymore...
Please, Christian, keep the good work on ANN.
