it is QUITE inspired from that old AOS4 mockup, that was my first thought too, but it looks a hell of a lot better than the old really ugly ANR, so, I like it! Will it be available for AOS4 too?

Or rather, this specific GUI module won't work on OS3.x. There are other GUI modules that should work with OS3.x though.

Hello Gelb.

Good work with AnR. Its by far the best streaming program for AmigaOS (and probably MOS too, but I wouldn't know about that). Hopefully with this new version it'll make a good general purpose player, too.

I know you are highly allergic to all things OS4, but if you want, I can compile an OS4 binary for you (that is if its not in Amiga E ;). You did trust me with the DynAMIte source before, so... (and before anyone asks, no I can't compile an OS4 version of that, because 1. i only have an old source, and 2. its in Amiga E ;)

Well, current versions of AnR run fine on OS4/A1.

I haven't compared the APIs, but I do know that OS4s layers.library does support shaped layers.

Thats nice. But are the gui modules external or not?

> No seriously (honest), why not simply use MorphOS and skip the hassle of porting this and that to OS4?

Because I already have (and love using and developing for) OS4. Who said its hassle? If AnR has external GUI modules, that means there can be GUIs that take advantage of both MOS and OS4 specific features, and everybody wins.

An audio-player/streamer is a tool I usually have running in the background while doing other things. That's why I (and probably Peter) would want to have it running on my main OS. OS4 support would be cool. Great software, btw.

Well, if OS4 won't support non-rectangular windows there's not much to
do is there?

I think we could all join efforts trying to convince Gelb to port it
to C or some other language that isn't locked to 68k, but on the other
hand I think we all prefer ANR as it is, and written in E, than no ANR
at all. I use SongPlayer for playing local files, but ANR is clearly
the best option for net radio playing.

Well, it uses mpega.library. There are PPC ports already working on both MOS and OS4. The main program doesn't necessarily need to be PPC; its already working great on OS4, and MOS.

I use SongPlayer for playing local files, but ANR is clearly

Agreed. I was just hoping the GUI modules were external, so all Amiga-solutions could use the same core functionality, and all have GUIs that use the enhanced features of their platform. Its win-win for everyone!

Without getting into the politics of the whole OS4 vs. MOS thing, there are simple reasons why OS4 support isn't really possible.

1) None of the #AmigaZeux team have AmigaONE, or OS4. We vary from being disinterested in to outrightly hostile to Hyperion's OS, for a number of reasons which I won't go into. But I guess everyone should know them. Needless to say, ANR will never be ported to OS4. Ever.

2) ANR is fully written in E. It won't be ported to C. The author is great at coding in E and is a lot more productive with such a human-readable language than any C coder could be. Anyway his C skills are weak, and it's a large project, so porting is not really possible. Please don't start any dumb petition or such kind of campaign. It's not going to happen. No discussion.

Thats why i was offering my help. I didn't say "please port this to OS4", i said I could help out. I really like to get along with people, you know. You don't have to be childish about this; Chris Hodges was more than happy to share code with me for one of my OS4 projects. The politics of the Amiga situation is bullshit, and I don't let it get in the way of my friendships, and i'm happy to work with MorphOS people.

We vary from being disinterested in to outrightly hostile to Hyperion's OS, for a number of reasons which I won't go into.

And I think that is really sad, childish and pathetic. But then, this is the way of things these days... :-(

2) ANR is fully written in E. It won't be ported to C. The author is great at coding in E and is a lot more productive with such a human-readable language than any C coder could be.

Thats why external GUI modules are such a great idea; Gelb can work his magic in E, but third parties can write their own extensions in their language of choice. AnR gets EVEN more support, everyone benefits, and nobody has to port anything from E to C.

Please don't start any dumb petition or such kind of campaign. It's not going to happen. No discussion.

Sad, childish and pathetic would be if we put code into ANR to intentionally fail on OS4. We did not do that and never will. I think Gelb will come round eventually and ensure that the new GUI will work on Amigas and OS4. He's not a vindictive person.

But we will never directly support OS4. We are registering our discontent about the way certain parts of the Amiga community, Amiga Inc., Hyperion and Eyetech have treated the MorphOS/Pegasos, those who use it and the companies and people behind it. Since the very first day OS4 was begun by Hyperion, the FUD has been flying hard against MOS. It still is.

We can't counter the unfairness of that through pettyness or through revenge, but we can protest in this small way. To us, OS4 is not the Amiga and many of those who support it, through their actions, do not deserve *our* support.

No. He is a nice guy, but unfortunately I won't ever visit #amigazeux again because of the way he reacted to me when I got my AmigaOne. I thought we were friends, but i really did not feel welcomed there any more...

Well, as far as I can see, shit has been flung in both directions. But this is not the place to argue about that.

I respect your position, but I think it is sad, and I don't agree that things are as one sided as you say. I do hope you'll consider the external GUI module idea at least. You wouldn't have to directly support any OS4 native extensions, but others could do that if they wished.

No, it's sad and childish. Putting code in to fail just moves you to another level of it. "I hate Bobby. He's a teacher's pet, so nobody in my whole class gets to play with my new toy except me and Stevie."

> But we will never directly support OS4. We are registering our

Well I never did or said anything negative about Pegasos, but I did say some good things about OS4 and Hyperion, so I guess that's enough to exclude people like me from your toys?

Also the actual beefing started with PowerUp a few years back. For whatever reason, the PowerUp developers refused to work well and get along with others, which forced the creation of WarpUp, their own PPC solution. Phase5, as you recall, threw some nasty hardware catches into certain PPC boards, and that's all it took get the fur flying. That's where it all started. Not with Genesi/AmigaInc or OS4/MOS. The fighting has been going on MUCH longer than that, and it will continue to carry on to each and every project until someone from either side can stand up, grow up and say, "Look, we're wrong. Let's put all this nonsense behind us and get new and better things started." Of course BOTH sides need to do this. Until this happens, there will be critical problems with this "community" for many years to come.

This ANR beef just extends the problem. It solves absolutely nothing.

PowerUP and OS4 should never have/had existed. They only did and do
for stupid "politics" reasons, but certaily not for technical one.

Look, H&P stops any Amiga dev, I hope Hyperion could do the same, this
way it will be a lot of better.

AminetRadio doesn't too much cpu power, this new version can probably run on any >68030-68040 Amiga.

AMinetRadio is one of the most used software for any amiga user. Stopping to support the AmigaOS3.X and later not supporting too AOS4 will not make people buy more Pegasos...
it is a sad attitude from this point of view.

Aminetradio should be modular and detect on which amiga/pegasos it is running and load the good libs to work perfectly.

nobody said that ANR will stop to work on classic computers. But since Gelb does develop on Peg/MOS and does not have the time to check all back on his classic machine (which he has probably in a storage) it's hard to make sure it will work on classic systems... time does not stand still, we have to move foreward.

But the new GUI-Module will not work on anything else than on MOS/Peg, because it uses certain MOS specific functions. The classic gui module will probably continue to work on classic computers like it does already. There are also beta-testers on classic machines, so don't worry. But making the new GUI module compatible to classic is tricky and time consuming and IMHO a job w/o fun and future sense: classic machines are dying, amithlon isn't really continued... and all in all os3.x is outdated for years.

With the split in the community there will be programs which will only work on MOS and there will be programs which only will work on OS4. That's sad, but the egos of os4- and mos core-teams and the whole market situation (genesi, ainc) don't allow an united way anymore. But on the other hand this also can be positive because competition is good for the market (as long it's fair/ sportive and not fighted by using FUD in forums, indeed. :\ ).

tokai

"BUT why this next AminetRadio will not support AmigaOS3.9 for use on Amiga classics and WINUAE and AMithlon computers that some of them are even faster that any Pegasos."

Purely emulated 68k setups are slower than MOS. When x86 reaches 4 GHz that might change, although then they'd only be faster than a G3 Peg running MOS.

I don't have much sympathy for non-progressive solutions like emulation. They go nowhere. We want to offer people an incentive to move on from running OS3.9 on top of Windows for the next 20 years, after all. Where's the gain? Oh, look, AWeb runs 80% faster with my new 2.2GHz PC with Geforce4...

Boooooooring. ;)

But seriously, the simple reason is: betatesting and coding on our old Amigas (which mostly don't work any more) is difficult and time consuming - especially with AGA. And emulated systems are too unwieldy for our taste (not that any of us have PCs powerful enough to do it properly anyway).

Look Mr. Anonymous, I have exactly >< so much time and I really like to decide myself how I waste my time. Instead of spending my time by supporting an OS I don't use anymore or supporting an OS I probably will never own I can put all the energy into some useful things for the OS of my choice.

And please remember that this is still freeware.

Besides that, ANR won't stop working on AmigaOS, it's just this particular GUI module. So, if you want to have this GUI, you have to get MorphOS somewhere. People should be given a reason to upgrade, something ANR could be. It's not the same as someone suggests upgrading to windows for some particular useful apps. Just suggesting to follow the natural upgrade path.

And you look, Gelb, an olive branch was proffered in your direction toward someone with a general interest in "another" OS and he was told that the OS he prefers is hated to the point of hostility by the people you associate yourself with. The reasons you give for not supporting other OSs are in conflict with the initial reasons, and it just doesn't make sense. There's more here than a simple matter of not having the available equipment to work with.

It looks to me like you've got some serious issues with anything that isn't MorphOS/PegasOS. You've slacked off just about everything else. You should expect some flack to come your way about it. Getting uppity just pushes people further away; at least it does in my case.
