Amiga Inc has recently updated their Club Membership offer page. They have removed the offer of the controversial T-shirt, therefore no new members will recieve T-shirts like those that joined before the update.

all they have to do is inform the old members that their lifetime membership ha expired and its time to purchase this years lifetime membership.

This will not only make perfect sense to all the members, but they will immediately double the number of memberships purchased.

after all, its not even the same club. The club for which they purchased a lifetime membership is now known as Club Amiga 2002, unfortunately that club is no longer supported and only exists for legacy purposes.

The new club, Club Amiga Digital Content Edition, is the new club going forward, and requires another $50 membership fee, yearly.

While the Club idea might have been seriously flawed, that page never went away, and those quotes at the bottom aren't new. It's not like the people who bought it haven't gotten something from it. In fact two or three hundred people joined after the original promotion ended, and I'm sure they only joined to get the magazine. Give them and everyone else a break.

This isn't the first time the offer was changed - it wasn't even a Club originally. IIRC when I joined (I am member #300 or so) you were buying a discount coupon, T-Shirt and entry into a competition. They changed the text half-way through the original offer, and then extended the offer period.

Also, Eyetech made statements that people who didn't join may not get an A1 (Alan Redhouse: "In the first manufacturing run we will build more A1's than the number of vouchers sold, but not a huge amount more. If the demand from non-voucher holders is high there may be a significant delay in fulfilling their orders."), so this was another factor in me joining. Note that he says "Vouchers sold", as he wrote this during the original offer, before AInc changed it.

Wasn't it a lottery at first, where you bought lottery tickets? That's
the way I recall it anyway, and that they had to change this into a
"club" because someone pointed out to them that just starting off big
dollar lotteries is not too legal in most places ...?

in all fairness, it was never marketed as a lottery.

they did say they would give out prizes, however, and only to those who paid the $50.

so it was a lottery of sorts and it was pointed out it was illegal. but, I don't have any reason to believe they devised it as a lottery, it was initially about selling vouchers...getting a $50 prepayment of sorts....with the lottery elements being there.

the Club idea was really a better idea, especially if they had foresight and not sold lifetime memberships to all those people who would have renewed every year.

but they never did think past the moment.

It was originally a raffle, until people notified them that it was most likely illegal. McEwen said at the time it was to cover rent (which it didn't as they were evicted within a few months of the offer). It was shady at the time, and I think most people took it that way, except for those few who still had faith in those guys, and thought it would actually help.

You can always not join the club AROS which has no schedual and rocking... and you can always DL the current version and even spend $50 or more or less and actually know your money is going to be used to help code it and improve it...Hell, you can even say what you want your money to be used on in coding or such... and it will be...Or super hell, you can help code it even....if you are so inclinded and able...

<shakes head>

I think the best thing AmigaInc ever did was allow Hyperion to create OS4.

I'd like to see a conglomerate come in and buy the Amiga off these jokers - are you listening Eyetech/Hyperion...?
Amiga has updated the Club Membership offer : Comment 46 of 49ANN.lu
Posted by Johan Rönnblom on 05-Mar-2004 11:59 GMT
Maybe they could also claim that the lifetime membership has expired
because, with OS4 released very soon now (TM), this marks the
beginning of a new life for all Amiga followers.

(it's of course important to formulate this so that there is nowhere
any promise that OS4 actually *will* be released within any stipulated
time)

Well, I don't think you can give Amiga much credit, Hyperion bailed them out on that. Remember the Hyperion development deal was announced days after OS4 was supposed to have been released, when in reality no one had been working on it, both Bplan and H&P rejected Amiga's shady contract offers (although Eyetech did apparently). Funny how none of the Eyetech license fees have managed to make it into any of Amiga's court documents, seems if it was on the books it would of been garnished to pay their debts.
