Finally it's here, the long awaited new status update about the development of AROS.

To know what has happened during the latest months in the AROS realm and what new features have been or are being implemented, go here, and watch the new screenshots here.

Cool! It's hard to believe the rapid progress of AROS, considering its budget compared to eg. the dotcom vc that the ainc clowns pissed away on flashy offices and table-football games alone, or the cash genesi has to throw at litigations.

Someone please remind me why I should use MorphOS or keep waiting for HyperionOS, for hardware ranging from "expensive and underperforming" (peg2) to "expensive and then hideously pricegougingly overpriced, dysfunctional and antique" (teron)?

There's that little "68k application compatibility" snag, but hey, UAE is nothing new.

Can't you do anything about the butt-ugly 3.x windowborders? It kills otherwise a very snappy look.

Great to see improvements so often!

AROS, looks better then MorphOS now, funny what Icon-set can do for the desktop, and some intuition updates can do, no matter what AROS have no apps, don’t help having a great looking OS, if the rest is not in place,

Hopefully the backbone hardware support (PCI, USB, SCSI, Fireware) will help the development of the sub hardware support,

Damn, AROS has really come on a lot! I don't like the icons, but apart from that it looks very good now.

Congratulations to those involved.

Funny you should ask, since one of our newest members (The Unstoppable NicJA) has just built a theming engine, which does look stunning... personally I prefer the 3.x look :-) (Look out for a 1.3 look from me in the future ;) )

Oooh, a theming engine? Sweet. Mind if I have a play with it? Is it in the latest builds? Does it work with native code (i.e., you write some C to draw lines, etc), or just pixmap (blech). Any chance of a screenshot?

I might give this a play now that things are moving along. I was missing the AROS status updates, and I'm a sucker for screenshots. I like the icons, even if they are a bit muddy brown and dark in places.

MorphOS's ability to run AmigaOS m68k applications makes all the difference. If only classic code was well-integrated into AROS (don't mention UAE, please).

Good work guys! AROS keeps getting better and better. It's beginning to look like there are 3 options now, PC+AROS, A1+AOS4 and Peg+MorphOS.

But, it's what's under the bonnet that counts, you shouldn't be swayed easily by eye candy. Let's compare the benchmarks, stability and "completedness" before we start saying A is better than B.

Now if only someone could port that Petunia thing to AROS so we could run 68k binaries on x86 then things could get really interesting!

or why not port Amithlon to AROS?

This is what you get when; you only read the first line, I say it looks better the MorphOS (eye-candy; looks better), I do not say it is better on the contrary, I say it doesn’t help having a grate looking OS whit no application support.

In reply to Comment 23 (Kjetil):
Well, there ARE application. Of course, there is not enough, but still.

@comment 19: The ability of running 68k software IS the very hard to integrate stuff. the goal of AROS is to reimplement the AmigaOS API for free (OpenSource and of charge).
Bot to run "stonage" applications :-)
Also, MorphOS should have in the future (When ???), the Q-Box which is also interresting (even if we will have to wait a little while !).

Bye

As I understand it, it will never be possible to get more modern features (like memory protection for example) with AROS. A major drawback, sadly. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Anyways, it's a great project that I follow with interest. Good work guys! I hope to contribute myself one day.

It will never be possible as long as we aim to be compatible with AOS3.x one day im sure that will no longer be the big picture (if it was up to me we would have cut the AOS3.x compatibility a long time ago) but by then LOADS of AROS will need to have gotten rewritten.

Actually T-bone, it would need to be the other way round :-)

If you were to port Amithlon to AROS, and then AROS to Amithlon, you would have pretty much the emulation system we are proposing anyway :-D since Amithon is sort of UAE :-)

" Someone please remind me why I should use MorphOS or keep waiting for HyperionOS, for hardware ranging from "expensive and underperforming" (peg2) to "expensive and then hideously pricegougingly overpriced, dysfunctional and antique" (teron)? "

Its really quite simple: MorphOS is a free OS that you get with the purchase of the Peg hardware.

Now Maybe You haven't noticed but it is beginning to look as though there is a shift going on towards PPC hardware, as I believe even MS is moving in that direction..

At any rate, I can't say much about AOS... whatever....or the A1....who really knows...

But AROS is being ported to teh Peg, so it should make for a good transition between the x86 and teh PPC hardware... and MorphOS ... well I don't know but I can guess there is some, perhaps enough similarities with AROS to be an easy transition of OSs....

I suspect MorphOS, being closed source may get some drivers and other such support of proprietary nature before AROS... as that does seem to be teh case or Linux vs. MS products.

An OS with the best features of Amithlon and AROS would be nice. The snag is that the emulator is specific for each processor. At present, AROS is AFAIK all portable to any CPU.

MS is not quite "shifting" to PowerPC per se i.e. it’s more like following their old MS Windows NT plan a.k.a. "One Microsoft Way" (TM).

>Now Maybe You haven't noticed but it is beginning to look as though there is
>a shift going on towards PPC hardware.

Note that MS use to have MS Windows OS products for PowerPC e.g. Windows CE 2.x, MS Windows NT 4.0 with a few of MS applications (e.g. Front Page) for PowerPC platform. PowerPC is just one of many processor platforms that MS is currently interested in i.e. the others are; MIPS, StrongARM/X-Scale, X86-32/IA-32, IA-64 and iAMD64/X86-64. Perhaps, Tao’s VP technology if one includes that particular virtual processor.

> for hardware ranging from "expensive and underperforming" (peg2)

299EUR for mainboard, CPU and OS? Expensive but not too expensive. Many PC users pay that amount for a gfx card. And while it's price higher than PC boards, it also has advantages: less power consumption, less heat, zero-noise, and MorphOS. Try to make a PC board + PSU (100W+x) zero-noise and look into your wallet again (some mini-itx boards are zero-noise but suck).

Re underperforming: a nonsensical statement because under or over depend on the use. Office apps, video playback, internet, mp3 etc. are well-served by a G3/600 and won't get much, if any, faster if you throw a 2000$ P4 Extreme Edition at them. On the other hand, it's underpowered for video encoding. For average use, the Pegasos feels pretty snappy.
