Oh, now I'm just waiting for another news item when it's actually been
sent to the duplication plant (rather than "will be"), and of course
one news item when the duplication plant has made some copies. Then
I guess we'll see a news item when it's been mailed out to developers,
and one when someone actually received it.

Sorry, but I'm a bit bored with these "OS4 ready, except not"
newsitems. If it's actually true this time then VERY good.

i dont think you really need to be pointed to the thousands of 'gone gold' announcements each year for software to show that this is a good milestone to post news about.

i can see complaining about those other things you say, which havnt happened yet, is a reason but its not an excuse.

It's just that it hasn't gone gold. It's just "expected" to do that
"in a couple of days". And since I've heard this so many times before,
I'm saving all my congratulations until people actually get it. And
before people start attacking me for being anti-OS4 or anything, I
said exactly the same about the "Peg2 is ready except not quite"-news
last year. The good thing about that was that at least it wasn't
dragged out more than a couple of months.

On amigawhirled there is a notice that the licensor is KMOS - so it appears any monies will go to KMOS bypassing all the court judgements for Amiga.

So everyone with judgements against Amiga gets screwed - and billyboy gets some monies?

I'll buy OS4.0 (bought it already in the SDK scam) so really now it is double or nothing.

Sheesh it'll cost me more the MS XP!

The meaning of "going Gold" has been changing recently thanks to the marketing hype types. Think about "developer pre-release going Gold" for a minute and you'll realise it's nothing but marketing double-speak.

I fear that no matter how good it might eventually turn out to be, AmigaOS 4 will become known as the "Mumbo-Jumbo" release.

Gone Gold means that a master CD image has been made. They used to be made on gold CDs once, hence the term.

There is nothing "marketing" about it. It isn't a fricking music album.

Glad to see that AmigaOS4 has reached a major milestone.

No it does not. "Gone Gold" has ment one thing *and one thing only* when it comes to any kind of copyrighted material for the better part of the last century:

It has sold at least 500,000 copies.

It was big news when software went gold before release. It ment that pre-orders had surpassed 500,000 units. A rare and mighty accomplishment.

So, Hyperion, have you sold 500,000 copies? If not, then stop with the false advertising.

No offence, but going gold in the SOFTWARE world means getting ready with the master CD, always has meant that so you are WRONG - so STOP accusing hyperion of false advertising, as what they have said is totally 100% VALID.

From http://www.geek.com/glossary/glossary_search.cgi?g

Gold Master - The final beta version of a program that is ready to be released to the public. The entire goal of the beta process is to arrive at the gold master candidate. Once it is tested successfully, it becomes the gold master and is shipped out to be duplicated (if it's a CD or floppy) and/or uploaded to the Web. The process of creating the gold master is often referred to as "going gold," or you could say that certain software "went gold" when the golden master was released.

From http://linux.omnipotent.net/article.php?article_id=11205

2.4 Goes Gold?

The title of the very first article I saw stated that 2.4 was "going gold." This is a perfect example of incorrect thinking. Going gold usually refers to the fact that a software company has burned a "master CD" for a final product: a "gold CD."

From http://www.jump.net/~fdietz/softgloss.htm#G

Going Gold
A game goes gold, when it is ready for duplication, but has not yet reached the market.

From http://www.macobserver.com/article/2001/03/07.7.shtml

OS X Goes Gold Master, Ready To Ship March 24th.

Apple has announced that Mac OS X, their forthcoming, next-generation operating system, has gone Golden Master and will be ready to ship on March 24th.

I doubt that this is any deliberate attempt to initiate a marketing hype, but perhaps the headline should have been "AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-release goes gold master" to avoid the confusion.

Of course, the above definitions of "going gold" would only hold true in the world of geeks and morons, in the really real world, beyond our desktops, other, more common meanings are known to exist.

This, the so called really real world, I would have no personal experience from myself though, being a geek and a moron, so it should be regarded as hearsay until further authentication can be obtained. ;-)

There are two meanings to the phrase "going gold". One is from the music industry which means "selling over 500,000 copies", the other is from the computer software industry which means "final master that goes into production/duplication".

Look, any of you blue butterfly brains could've said "Well, we're tired of waiting, we're off to our happy little morphos cloud" and been done with it, and yet you had to stick around screaming "OH NOS IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN LEAVE WHILE YOU CAN AMIGA SUXXORS MORPHOS RULZ" and when that didn't work, your overman thought he could steal Hyperion's work, and now that that's failed you...you...I don't know. Just what exactly have you done? Insinuated that I'm in the KKK? Is...Bill Buck an african-american? Has someone gone after him in a sheet, with a burning cross? What, exactly? I mean if you're going to try to insult me at least get your idioms and insinuations in the same fucking ballpark as the rest of us. I mean, call me a "red troll" or tell me how fucked up you think Bill McEwen is or something.

This bizarre dragging in of some sort of feint regarding the KKK is just too weird to even make it down the barrel, much less across the battlefield. So that's -1 for you, I'm afraid.

Yeah but Bill Buck has the balls to at least DIVE into this niche Market and at least trying something regardless of being successful or not. You can't say this from other companies. Not everything you plan or do today will result in fruits tomorrow bcause you can NOT calculate the factor tomorrow.

What you can do is to learn from your mistakes and try again and again and again util you become successfully.

I do recommend that you read this Book with the Title Das Prinzip Gewinnen written by Arthur L. Williams. I don't know whether there is an english version of it but I do assume there is since that guy comes from USA.

It describes the life of a poor college coach who wanted to do something new, to make something out of himself. Who then dived into the world of business by selling insurances from door to door and people (for almost two years) where shutting the door infront of him. But he always stand up again and continued because he believed in what he does. Regardless of how many times he failed. And today he owns one of the biggest Insurance companies within USA.

I don't know how true the story is and if he still owns that Insurance company.

Well, this is great news, at last!

...Typically, a few idiots insist on being idiots. Listen, idiots, "going gold" has been a common term for years for software CDs being mastered, and no (sane, clue-enabled) person thinks it means 500,000 copies of anything. Check out:

www.macgamer.com/features/

*Several* stories about games going gold there, and for sure Mac games don't really sell 500,000 copies. ;)

So, how about an apology?
