A camera team from 3sat travelled to Göteborg to visit the AmiGBG fair in early April, and prepared a report on the AmigaOne (including a version in Mini-ITX format) and Amiga OS 4.0; network access for the C64; Mac on Linux on the AmigaOne; and Amiga Forever 6.0 by Cloanto. It will be aired today (17.04.2004) at 18:30 CET. This should be interesting for anyone with a satellite dish, regardless of whether you understand German or not.

But how is it possible to receive that channel for example in Italy?
However it's cool to know that Amiga is still so popoular to dedicate it a minireport on tv..

Good to se some marketing of Amiga products, I hope Hyperion thinks the same, I know that AmigaOS4.0 is not ready for the mass market, lacking Java support, etc. etc. supposedly AmigaOS4.2 is going to be a mass market product.

+ Improve printer support
+ Java
+ Web browser flash
+ PowerPoint (.pps)
+ 3D acceleration supporting gfx cards.
+ Improved desktop, (Async directory listing, plugging, Icons)
+ Extras (secured Email client, Web Browser)
+ Native games
+ Native programs (Gimp, Open Office)
+ New script language to replace AREXX
+ SMP
+ G5 (more power, more speed)
+ Networking (share directory’s, name service, SAMBA, FTP, NFS, APPELTALK)

In reply to Comment 1 (Roberto):
Most know what Amiga where, I think this some geek news, Commodore C64 network support, new Amiga, most folks have a history whit Amiga inn some way or the other. Amiga was one of the most used home computers one time after all, as game consol or as a computer, as revival to MacOS (Black & white, greyscale) or PC, Atari

"+ PowerPoint (.pps)"

A Powerpoint player was announced for Hollywood.

"+ 3D acceleration supporting gfx cards.
+ Improved desktop, (Async directory listing, plugging, Icons)

+ Native programs (Gimp, Open Office)"

They are not native Amiga programs - if done, they would be ports. They would not have ARexx, for instance.

"+ New script language to replace AREXX"

You can use Python now.

"+ SMP
+ G5 (more power, more speed)
+ Networking (share directory’s, name service, SAMBA, FTP,"

There is already an Amiga SAMBA, and several FTP servers.

True, however integrating samba config whit Workbench, can be good idea, maybe add a network-browsing icon on the desktop (not like My network, some thing better)

You can use Python now

Can you make python scripts for arexx applications? Or will the programs need to support python?

Correction they be “native ports”, getting them to run on 68k is all that is required to call them ports, truly supporting AmigaOS4.0 they need to be system friendly and take advantage of new features.

Yes you can communicate with AREXX ports from Python, check out the AmigaPython home page: http://www.monkeyhouse.eclipse.co.uk/amiga/python/

Haven`t got satellite, but the link took me to 3sat`s article about the broadcast. Quite a good article. The Amiga Community as a whole would benefit by repeating the exercise as widely as possible, eg get up an Amiga (A1/AOS4 , Peg/MOS and AROS all together) exhibition, with as many extra exhibitors as possible - user groups, Cloanto, developers, etc, and invite the various TV companies and PC/Retro interest magazines to do a feature. Think of the possible impact it could have if, say, Sky did a feature. Time to bury the hatchet, Amigans, and pull in the same (ish) direction. Who knows, WE may benefit by feeling once more that sense of close community that was!

Your personal requirements for AmigaOS 4.2...

+ Improve printer support

yes, that needs to be done

+ Java

would be licenced from SUN in an ideal world...though a 3rd party version would be very useful (eg the current Amiga Java project, or port of Blackdown)

+ Web browser flash

nothing to do with the OS

+ PowerPoint (.pps)

Nothing to do with the OS, could be handled by a 3rd party office program...

+ 3D acceleration supporting gfx cards.

yes, should be sorted out.

+ Improved desktop, (Async directory listing, plugging, Icons)

its already being vastly improved (this is a section of the work that hasnt been deeply examined or discussed yet. expect even more for OS 4.1 onwards

+ Extras (secured Email client, Web Browser)

nothing to do with the OS. though a secure web browser will be available
(IBrowse) and YAM and SimpleMail are improving dramatically. both of these are already far more secure than the default Windows Outlook Express! ;-)

+ Native games
+ Native programs (Gimp, Open Office)

once again, nothing to do with the OS. there;ll be plenty of native OS4.0 apps once the dev kit goes to non-betatest developers. I'd also hope that 'native programs' would support AmigaOS functionality, ie support process scripting

+ New script language to replace AREXX

there'll be ARexx - 68k though, but Python and/or PERL will easily be able to take over from what it did.

+ SMP

i hear you brother. alleluyah!

+ G5 (more power, more speed)

only useful when programs support or need the G5 specialised functions. and, hang on, isnt this Amiga/AmigaOS we're talking about? the system thats so efficient that even now people are running it on equivalent to Pentium 90's ??

+ Networking (share directory’s, name service, SAMBA, FTP, NFS, APPELTALK)

RoadShow is fantastic. SAMBA is easily supported thanks to AmigaSamba (which covers quite a few required functions), there are simple FTP programs, I'd like a similar program to WinSCP. Appletalk though? Even MacOS is ditching Appletalk ;-)

Will it ship with Arexx? Is that really licensed, or is it illigal?

AFAIK Amiga påython has Arexx support, and it can use Arexx ports. I have installed it, but I have not had enough time to learn to use it yet.
