So this was the big announcement?

Well... good for genesi and perhaps good for covering Pegasos development costs.

Will HP be using MorphOS?

What does it mean ?
What does it bring ?
Just because typing "Genesi" on google.com brought to a hp page
doesn't mean it's a news to any of us. So where's the relevance ?

Not a compareable Apple and I guess the prices are not that drastical. 400 for a Peg a bit too less, 2000 for a Apple a bit too much.
BUT: Not everyone needs the Power of G5 ae Peg offers now for these lower cpu-power profile a good and "cheap" solution.
The G5s are cool and the price/performance ratio is not bad, but if I don't need the G5 power Apple has not much to offer since an iMac or so is not very useful to play a little server...

In reply to Comment 6 (Kjetil):
Once again you are comparing apples and oranges. In what way will
a noisy $2000+ Apple G5 be suitable as a thin client? You see, there
are many areas where low noise, low price and "enough power to do the
desired job" is more important than the latest spec's and marketing
numbers out there.

But who knows, maybe sales of this ODW concept can actually finance
the development of a Pegasos G5 motherboard, without the choked VC
money from BBRV? Genesi has since more than a year proclaimed its
ambitions to make a Pegasos G5, and that makes sense, since it would
make the Pegasos offering more complete. The Pegasos II with G3,
perfekt for usages like thin clients and home servers, with SILENT G4
(on its way with the 7447A based CPU cards) for cheap, silent but
quite powerful desktop usages (perhaps even dual G4's to make full use
of the DDR memory ;)), and a Pegasos III G5 (single or dual),
expensive (but cheaper than Apple) and noisy, but offering the
ultimate power with todays and tomorrows G5 CPU's. A whole product
family, ranging from low MHz G3's, through mid-scale G4's, to highest
power G5, each option offering it's own advantages to the customer.
All are justified.

Genesi has time after time proven their capability and competence of
designing and producing new hardware. They can surely do this. It will
take a little money, but it looks like there will be some money coming
in soon, real money, from actual sales! :)

Genesi is accepted as a "value partner" (or whatever it was called) by
ATI, which has opened the doors to internal documentation of ATI
hardware etc, they are recognized by IBM (the G3 and G5), and now HP
as a partner who uses their respective technologies in their products.
The Pieces of the Open Desktop Workstation puzzle is coming together,
and it will be officially launced by Motorola/freescale at the end of
this month. The ODW could really become something interesting. Let's

Having said that, business is business; as others have said, it will take a little time to see if this is more than PR puffery from Genesi - I would like to think it has some substance.

It can benefit indirectly. The more copies of MorphOS there are out there, the bigger the potential market for Amiga programmers. Most will compile for both MorphOS and AOS4 - the differences are trivial compared to the differences between Amiga OS and Windows or Linux.

That will increase the supply of software over all.

The battle is to establish the PPC-based computer as a standard product, and not just a freak board made by some tiny company in Germany/England/wherever. Anything that increases sales for either Pegasos or AmigaOne benefits both.

They are not fighting for a tiny market (existing Amiga users), but trying to get recognised as players in an enormous market (computers-for-applications).

@Don, there are literally millions of PowerPC computers out there, they are called Macintoshes, and Linux runs on them, if you want linux for some reason.

They have rack mounts/desktops/laptops, etc.

The Genesi claim to fame, is that they haven't upgraded to G5 technology yet.
Well, while that is undoubtedly an interesting feature, (sarcasm) this 'thin client' argument made by others on this thread, is, well a bit thin...

The fact is you can buy an Apple G4, if that is absolutely what you want, and that Apple G4 1.25 (tower) is still for sale, according to apple, as long as there is demand. It is U.S. $1299 and that if far cheaper than the Pegasos II/G4 similarly equipped which is $1499 at ultraspec.us --I'm making a direct comparison here people, the Apple store and the Genesi U.S. dealer (the other u.s. dealer liberty tree, doesn't list the price).

Now, we are always supposed to believe someday in the future there will be this fantastic super product (ODW) to be released, and we can believe its much cheaper now...if we must. But the price will be the price, and we'll talk about pricing when we get there....

For TODAY though:

Fully configured Apple G4 tower (1.25ghz) : $1299
Same configuration Peg II/ G4 (1.0ghz) : $1499

that's the real truth.

References:

http://www.ultraspec.us/custom.html
http://www.apple.com <--you'll have to click around, the link is too long to cut and paste.

The fact is, when it gets down to actually making a purchase, from real dealers, a full working computer, the peg II, is under spec'd and $200 dollars more than the Apple machine.

The Apple one comes with a Mac OS X license and the peg II, will require you to steal the software, since Apple doesn't license OS X on non-apple hardware. Well, even if you think you are allowed to purchase the retail box and run it on the peg (u are not), but if you do that add another $100 or so to the peg's price.

The only reason people have to buy pegasos, is if they are an amigan wanting to run morphos...very few purchases have come from non-amigans.

Its about time they stop slagging this market. THe only way they are getting to that big piece of pie you keep talking about, is if they grow this market, this amiga market, to the point where volumes justify an expansion. I'm sure that local mom&pop hamburger stand would like to have 10,000 units and defeat McDonald's...but there are a few steps in between. A mom&pop hamburger stand, would first have to have a profitable hamburger stand, then they can think about opening a second one. It's the same principle here.

they cannot skip the step of growing this market...if they could skip that step, then there is really no reason for them to be in this market anyway....its obvious they can't skip that step.

Genesi is a gold sponsor at the SNDF. If importants deals are made thanks to the partnerships with Motorola / IBM / HP than it would certainly have a huge impact on the Pegasos and MorphOS development.

I don't see many other ways to interpret "Genesi will be offering HP products with the [blah]". This doesn't seem to stop some people from entering a deleriously joyous state (as per usual in our world when there's fresh marketing to consume, regardless of whether it's free or costs $50 to read) and start imagining how Amigoid Product X will rule the industry because Industry Giant Y is involved somewhere. It still remains to be revealed if there will be something more than what Floid linked to... ;) Re. Yes I saw it too:

"At SNDF the ODW will be launched as a "A Standardized PowerPC Embedded Software Development System." This is where Motorola/freescale has carved out a market niche with the G4 -- the embedded system market. From there we will head to the broader market and a PowerPC Linux Desktop solution.

Dave, Matt, Thomas and Sven all arrived in Dallas Tuesday. Raquel and I and Thomas and Gerald arrive Friday. Paul gets in today. Thomas and Sven will provide training to Motorola/freescale today in Austin. Things are moving. By the end of this month, the Open Desktop Workstation will be in use in Motorola offices in the USA, UK, Finland, Taiwan and Japan and an active sales and market development program will begin.

This all coincides with this announcement yesterday:

http://www.genesi.lu/press_20040421.php

Are you beginning to see how this all fits together?

HP is one of the largest IT companies in the world and for them to agree to partner with us in the PowerPC and Linux environment is something that makes Genesi unique. This also highlights the advantage of our OpenFirmware.

Beyond the credibilty HP brings us, it also enables Genesi to obtain attractive pricing on HP products so the we can provide our customers a total solution for their system needs with solid margins.

Once we get this properly organized we will create a new class of Genesi/Pegasos Reseller who will partner with us and Motorola/freescale to provide not only system solutions, but the training and support required. This is where Pegasos Academy fits in! :-D

Of course, we still have MorphOS in mind too (but, that is another story!)... ;-)

R&B :-)"

> It all did not clear things much to me. Almost as if it would be the other
> way around than what I originally thought

I don't know what you originally thought, or why (;-)), but here is my view on things: Genesi is putting together a product called "Open Desktop Workstation" (http://www.pegasosppc.com/odw.php), and they are collecting support from several big players in the industry for this. HP is one of the leaders in their field, and now it looks like Genesi has secured a deal (a good deal for both, hopefully) for HP technology/products to be sold together with this workstation. This could make the product more complete, and more attractive. What other benefits that might come out of this partnership remains to be seen.

Almost anyone can now build a Pegasos board. The Pegasos is meant to be an OPEN architecture.

Apple's tech, be it better, more up to date, cheaper in some cases, is CLOSED.

That is THE difference. That's maybe why some companies like Motorola,... may be interested in the Pegasos.

Again, we should learn more after the SNDF (actually I hope so) !
