How hard is it to provide a 2 line explanation of what this program does?

AFAIK this is the fastest MPEG player in existance for 68k Amigas.
It has existed for a LONG time, but it hadn't been updated for a while.
You should know it...

How about adding an option that opens the movie on the Workbench?

If you have a gfxcard with PIP/Overlay support, it WILL open on the Workbench (in a window). Did you mean adding support for playback in a window on gfxcards without PIP?

Yes, as neither WinUAE nor Amithlon has PIP/Overlay support (unfortunately).

Window playback is the next thing which I planned to add. I'm not sure about MPEG2 in a 68k program, MPEG2 streams are much higher bitrate, what kind of a 68k system could cope with that?

@RIVA Author:

I registered RIVA two-three days ago, as there was a link to Reg.Net
on your homepage, and that it was still valid...

However, when reading through the readme on Aminet for this it says:

"I would like to thank everyone who have registered in the past, if you
would like to receive an updated full version, please send an email to
riva@aioworld.com and I will send you the latest registered version."

So, what's all this about?

Thanks...

You mean you registered twice? All updates are free of charge, so anyone who has registered RiVA at any time will naturally get all future versions. This is the same with all shareware programs AFAIK and it is also stated in the RiVA guide.

Someone with a @web.de email address must have made a typo when specifying their email address, because the mail I sent to him bounced back. If you read this, please contact me!

Great! Well, I took that message as you had stopped taking money for the product, and that you gave out registred versions by e-mail... Oh well! :-)
Good to hear it wasn't the case.

Also, I have received the registered version in the mail, however, it's very peculifar. Who is Istvan? Your twin brother?

The author of the riva is called: Stephen Fellner. He is an elite guy, who translates his name to english, because Istvan = Stephen. ;)

Is it correct, Pityu? :)

Well, if the Coldfire accelerators ever make it there seems to be alot of interest among Amiga users in them and there will be 200mhz and above versions IIRC, so maybe that would cope with MPEG2.
How would an overclocked 060 near 80mhz would cope by the way?
RiVA 0.48 Released : Comment 21 of 23ANN.lu

In reply to Comment 20 (José):
Even an overclocked 060/66 can only just reach 15fps on MPEG1 (352x288x25fps PAL or 352x240x30fps NTSC) with worst audio quality, this is half speed, you would need a 120+MHz 060 to play it without skipping. I don't know how the latest Coldfire processors perform at the same MHz az 060. They don't support all 680x0 instructions/addressing modes, so a lot of stuff would have to be emulated. Probably with a 200MHz Coldfire you can play MPEG1 without skipping with good audio quality (e.g. 44kHz). You'd really need something like a 400MHz 060 to cope with MPEG2 (SVCD/DVD). Even the top CyberstormPPC cards (604e/233) are just way too slow for SVCD/DVD. For that stuff you need something in the order of a G3 or G4...

Or Amithlon on a decently specced PC! :)
