We were approached by a non-Amiga company, USB-Pendrive.co.uk to test the USB Bar for a number of weeks on our Amigas.

The result is this review.
Check it out if you fancy an alternative to ancient floppy disks on your Amiga.

It is bigger than 880KB though.

And you can get USB flash drives up to 1GB in size.

They aren't meant as a hard drive replacement! Read the easy to find review.

Amiga has had USB for some time now.

So Amiga USB is compatible with "standard" USB. And for the most
common mass storage device mode.

They'd probably give you a small discount if you order in bulk ;-)

(PS. That's what I thought too when I looked at the price! I'd rather drag around a portable USB hard drive than pay that)

Wouldn't it be cool to have a boing ball shaped usb pen drive for say $299 with OS4 pre-installed on it. You just plug it into your Pegasos2 and it would boot up into OS4. How does that sound? ;)

-Nice that an 'external' company apparently thought the test was worthwhile.

-While "FAT95" ("VFAT?") is the de-facto standard today -- and the one MS wants to charge royalties for -- it'd always be interesting to know how Amiga FFS stacks up on a particular device... to remind us of what the software overheads are/aren't for either FS, and just confirm there are no surprises. ;)

My point is that, if USB is implemented properly on the Amiga then there is no need to do any extra testing. If my company just spent X thousand dollars on ensuring that our USB implementation was correct then either it is or it isn't.

If the OS supports USB, then the USB memory sticks at Walmart (32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 512MB..) can be used with it. Those run about $40 and up. :-)

Memory sticks - where can you use these on an Amiga? You mean plugging them in a USB reader (7 formats) and using it that way? OK - I'll buy that.

Why go thru that when the USB pens are available - with much easier ways to be used and interfaced?

Am waiting on (a backorder from ecost.com) a 256 MB memory stick (Magic Gate mini) that I can use in my Sony DCR-1 mini camcorder (for snapshot pictures).

Around $92 IIRC.

Think convenience. I can bring over huge amounts of info when I go to over to someone's place. And it's even smaller than an iPod Mini. Fits on a keychain. Doesn't need a PCMCIA slot, no need to open up the hood nor a FireWire added card.

IMO 512 MBs isn't enough. It's not even the size of a regular CD-ROM (700 MBs). I hope they hurry up and bring the price of the 4gigs USB key down. :D

Interestingly enough, most original floppies I have still work after 10-15 years. But the boot-floppy I made last week... Nah.

Typically, they specify data retention at 10 years plus. Unlike magnetic storage, magnetic fields will not affect this. But magnetic storage won't self-drain as quickly. Pros and cons to everything, right?

The only thing that will keep your data is a RAID with offsite backups. I see no other solution... (if your house burns down you loose all your old software unless you have an offsite backup).

I agree about the things you say about RAID and offsite backups. I hope those USB harddrivesollutions can drop some more in price (300GB USB HD is around $400) and I would need at least two of those... ;)

Well, floppies can obviously hold data for more than 10 years (or even 20 years). Given the right environment (important negative side, that).

Flash is typically spec'ed to 10 years (which is a lot less, but still just a theoretical number, could be anywhere from 5 to 20 years for all we know), but environment doesn't affect it NEARLY as much as with a magnetic storage.

So if you know your environment is free of magnetic noise, floppies should theoretically outlast flash storage. But it's all just theory until it's been tried out for 15 years, right?
