well maybe you should bring come popcorn, this can lead to good fight, real entertaining, if any one asks why H&P did not give full access to all the sourcefiles of AmigaOS3.9

I hope all that crap is past now and people can move forward. I was encouraged to see H&P announce an OS4 native version. ArtEffect along with PageStream are great first steps.

Haage&Partner have ruined good products with there ignorance, but now we should arse lick them? no way, i urge everyone to pirste these products when they are available as Haage&Partner do not deserve our support.

I would have thought that was obvious...no-one paid them for the rights to the source code.

Of more concern would be sale of *mithlon after the author (no HF, not you) asked them to stop sales.

It seems any remotely amiga related company can do anything and users forgive them...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they "announce" it quite some time ago?

Or announce that, they were looking for people to port their software to AmigaOS4... (And now they've found that "someone", I assume)

Anyway, good news for all people waiting for AOS4, I guess

I started to write a reply but I did not want to break the ann posting rules.

H&P did mention they wanted to port Art Effect to OS4, it's nice to see they are able to show it off.

How is it in the past? Have they ever admitted what they have done wrong and apologised for it? If they did I and just about everyone else in the Amiga world missed it.

You can't sweep past wrongdoings[*] under the carpet and pretend it never happened because it is convenient to do so. H&P are responsible for some of the worst abuses of copyright and licensing ever seen in the Amiga market and I suggest you'd have to be insane to buy another product from them, no matter what it is.

[*] This does not include the source code issue. Quite honestly that is one occasion where they appear to have been totally within their rights. Not paying licensing fees for any copies of AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9 sold is another matter.

Sounds great! Should fly really well on G4 :)

I wonder if they'd ditched the GUI made in StormWizard (or whatever it's called)) in Art Effect and recoded it in Reaction? Otherwise the look would still be 3.x GadTools like (not very modern...)

BTW, does anybody know how I could disable the stupid requester that asks for "[X] Smoothing On/Off" (or something like that) every time you load
a JPEG. There's no settings for it, and I'm referring to version 3 (the one bundled with AmigaOS XL).

I think both H&P and Amiga Inc each believe the other owes them money.

Good. I like the simple, functional gadtools look a lot better than the OS4 screenshots (the soft-framed buttons remind me of Windows 3) or the gradient overkill in MorphOS. Why does every single button and free space have to be covered with texures, have soft edges, be transparent or have a gradient? Now that the devlopers have a fast CPU, they use it for all the wrong purposes.

Well, even if the GUI has been recoded into Reaction, don't forget that the
OS4 GUI is fully configurable. You can very easily change the buttons to
your liking and remove any gradients and just use one colour for titlebars etc. etc. :)

Come to think of it, maybe a Classic OS 3.x theme is included in the distribution...

>Why does every single button and free space have to be covered with texures, >have soft edges, be transparent or have a gradient?

The OS4 default GUI is not THAT bad! :) There's no transparencies, and the texture is very subtle - looks almost white. Perhaps a bit too much overuse of gradients...

I think default OS4 look is wery good, I like it wery much. I really don't like plain OS3.x gadtools style, because I think it looks just boring. That's why I use VisualPrefs, Birdie etc in my A1200T+OS3.9. Plain gadtools style was ok when I did have only AGA nad no gfx-card. But now when I have voodoo3 in my A1200T I want that desktop look pretty. And OS4 default look is pretty much what I like.

There were many positive comments after every screenshot, so I'm either standing for a minority position or some people have a reflex to defend the look of OS4, no matter what ;) Anyway, I just can't help but think that most screenshots of OS4 were ugly. To be fair, they have improved. Wood textures are gone, thanks god. There is still a problem with proportions (frames), gradients and backgrounds (dock), transparency (menus), soft-edges (buttons) and the parochial pastel color scheme. 4 out of 10. OTOH, the taste of people is widely different accross the world, in spite of all globalization. In many US films, you see cars with wood on the side. Yuk. I like Bauhaus design and African/Arabic use of primary colors. From that perespective, I would give OS4 saturated colors rather than the mousy pastel, sharp edges to gadgets, and all backgrounds would be monochromatic or near monochromatic gradients (instead of a "metal" texture behing the dock and such aberrations in good taste).

" I think both H&P and Amiga Inc each believe the other owes them money."

I would argue that the is a difference between "claim" and "belief". Amiga Inc certainly claim that H&P owe them licensing fees for AmigaOS 3.9 and AmigaXL, which Juergen Haage admits he has not paid. It could well be that Amiga Inc actually believe in this claim, and it would appear to be at least partly justified. H&P have admitted they owe Amiga Inc money for AmigaXL licenses, but claim they were never invoiced.

H&P claim that Amiga Inc owe them money is much harder to justify. I don't see who is likely to believe that Amiga Inc agreed to (a) pay H&P for AmigaOS development, (b) allow H&P to publish using the Amiga trademarks and (c) waive all licensing fees with regard to AmigaOS. I think Haage knows full well he's been cheating, but he doesn't give a damn because he believes himself untouchable.

The "forgive and forget" attitude of a number of people in this thread proves that he is totally right. He can rip people off and destroy products, and no one will ever care enough to make him pay for it. That's the Amiga community for you.

Exactly my sentiments :) There are a few users over at aw.net, who demanded ban of Haage und Partner products earlier - it will be interesting to see if their approach will change or stay the same.
