Elena Novaretti, with the help of Massimo Tantignone, released a version of her good program Power Icons for AmigaOS4 too. It includes also features like those present in the MorphOS version such as alpha-blending for icons. News forwarded originally from amigaworld.net thru Iksnet.it. SCREENSHOTS AVAILABLE.

Can't wait for the "There is no TCP-IP in MorphOS" guys to tell us "There are no PNG icons in OS4", following their logic :)

Anyway, great news, and a really nice job Elena!

And a little misunderstanding:

"It includes also features like those present in the MorphOS version such as alpha-blending for icons."

In MorphOS it's not PowerIcons handling PNG Icons, it's internal. So (as the news item correctly tells on amigaworld.net) it includes also features like those present in the _original_ (AmigaOS) version.

It is a good thing having the famouse Power Icons on OS4. Personally i'm looking forward for the new Glow Icons (256 colors palette for every icon) of Mason. But ehi! It is very cool to have also png icons!

Thanks so much.

From AW.net:

"You'll like to hear, then, that the AmigaOS 4.0 version of PowerIcons does indeed show the icon in realtime when moving it around (complete with alpha blending). Also, the new icon library already supports things like making "default" icons slightly transparent (selectable in workbench prefs), and of course the shadow/outline effect of icon labels is also already included. Furthermore, you may opt to show the label when moving icons."

@Elena&Massimiliano:
Good job! BTW, what about using MPNG files instead of PNG so we can have selected icons? MPNG files are standard so it wouldn't be as hacky as putting 2 pngs inside an icon file

In reply to Comment 9 (Crumb // AAT):
MNG-VLC was specced for the MorphOS icon system but one thing basically made
it a pointless exercise:

There are no Amiga, MorphOS or pretty much any other apps that create MNG
animations reliably.

Internet Explorer doesn't view them without a bulky ActiveX control, neither
does any other Amiga browser. Mozilla even had it's support removed in favour
of an external plugin since it adds 500kb to the binary and never gets used.
Paint Shop/Animation Shop on the PC creates BROKEN MNG files!

I think once we get something like ImageFX or PPaint to support saving
animations as MNG, it'll be a viable solution. The addition to the PNG format
for icons is totally inoccuous and benign, and fits the standard, and will
sit happily in an MNG file too.

Note, that you don't have to use PowerIcons if you don't want to. It's not a patch which fixes flaws/bugs in the OS.

Last Time I checked, there where many troubles with Dopus Mag II on OS 4.0 .. solved? Anyway the Post was about Hacks in MOS.. Powericons is a hack to Workbench 3.x and it is avaialbe as MOS Binary, because it is also possible to have Workbench 3.x under MorphOS.. When do people understand the dirfference between a Desktop and the whole OS? MorphOS=Operating System, Ambient=MOS Desktop. AmigaOS=Operating System, Workbench=AmigaOS Desktop.
And as mentioned before, it is possible to have Workbench 3.x as MOS Desktop as well as Dopus Mag II and afair Scalos.

By the way Elena, if you are reading this forum thread...

Can you realize PowerIcons for Dopus Magellan running under MorphoS?

(Because the Dopus Icons under MorphOS are all a square named "Ambient PNG Icon")

There are two "very important users" here in Naples (one in Naples and one in Caserta) who will apprecciate ***a lot*** this effort from you.

And I bet we both know who they are... ;-)

Ciao,

Raffaele

No, this is an old, old, old question already treated and explained a looooot of time ago: Magellan uses an internal way to draw icons on its desktop that is not documented. She tryed some experimentation and a bit of reverse engin. but there has been nothing to do.

> (Because the Dopus Icons under MorphOS are all a square named "Ambient PNG Icon")

She perfectly know all these. We all (expecially in MorphOS community) spoke about this when PowerIcons was born (almost a year ago) and I remeber you that at beginning she created this program for her personal needs:
Elena didn't like Ambient, the MorphOS desktop, because (expecially in first releases) was really poor of functionality even if damn fast and stable. So she decided to use the Workbench (the AmigaOS 'Desktop') on top of MorphOS on her loved Pegasos. Obviously in this way she loosed the possibility to have these wonderfull 24bit PNG icons used by Ambient/MorphOS. So she decided to create PowerIcons!

After that, when PIcons was finally perfectly stable ans usable, she wanted to give a big present to all our Amiga community compileing this wonderfull tool also for 68k. Finally now she adapted it also to run on top of AmigaOS4.0!
This is the story people :-)

> There are two "very important users" here in Naples (one in Naples and one in Caserta) who will apprecciate ***a lot*** this effort from you.
> And I bet we both know who they are... ;-)

She knows, she knows. I tell you again that a loooot of testing on Magellan has been done both on my Peg that on her Peg. No hopes to have it running on Magellan (that I'm useing on my Pegasos from the beginning!). I'm a big, big fanatic of Opus Magellan (never used Workbench on all my Amigas in the past since years), but however, even if in the past months I soffered a lot because of this impossibility, now I'm not sad anymore, beacuse I know that soon Ambient will have same Magellan features. So there will be no more need to use this big piece of software on top of my OS.

Don't have Magellan, but it's very likely using intuition.library/DrawImage() to
draw icons, as that was the standard way of doing it in the pre AOS 3.5 era, where
a special function to draw icons did not yet exist. It was only introduced in 3.5:
icon.library/DrawIconState().

Even if a bit tricky it's certainly not impossible to patch old-style icon drawing
(ie. DrawImage) as well.
