Thanks to the generous support of Genesi, and the hard work of Martin Blom, I am happy to announce that an updated Remote Desktop client for MorphOS has been released.

Remote desktop (or rdp protocol) allows a client computer to connect to a Windows 2000 server, Windows 2003 server, or Windows XP Pro computer giving the user complete control over the remote system. It is similar in concept to VNC.

Some of the features of the updated MorphOS client are:

-Full screen or Window mode
-accelerated CyberGraphX support on 8, 16, or 24 bit screens
Sound re-direction from the host to the client using the AHI unit of your choice
-Iconify support
-settings for low, medium or high bandwidth
-MorphOS PPC native binary
-PNG Icons

Connectivity with other operating systems is an important feature and will give credibility to MorphOS. Every major operating system has a Remote Desktop client that works with Windows XP, and now MorphOS does, too.

Additional thanks go out to André 'Jobbo' Siegel for the gorgeous PNG icons and Sigbjørn Skjæret for additional beta testing and advice.

Remote Desktop is available for download in the Downloads section on MorphZone.

Requirements:

-Access to a Windows 2000 server, Windows 2003 server, or Windows 2000 Pro computer with Terminal Services installed, or access to a Windows XP PRO computer with Remote Desktop enabled
-MorphOS 1.4.x
-Internet Connection or LAN connection

Note: VNC allows to view the remote display, Terminal Services allows to create a connection on the remote computer. So you create a connection with its own environment, its own desktop....

bye

Um, maybe you're a bit slow, but that exactly what the newsitem says has been done. Amiga developers have ported rdesktop.

I am trying to connect to a XP setup and always get "ERROR: connect: Connection refused".

I have tried several different commandline setups and even disabled the firewall but still with no luck. Do I have to configure some bits in Miami or something aswell?

This would definetely be a useful tool as now I am forced to use VNC which ain't really the fastest method to control another computer.

In reply to Comment 8 (hooligan/dcs):
You must have Windows XP PRO - Home doesn't support Remote Desktop. If you do have PRO, you have to enable remote desktop by right clicking on "My computer", click the Remote Tab and check off "Allow users to remotely connect to this computer".

You should also be able to ping the machine with miami by IP address, but beyond that there is no configuration in the tcp/ip stack required.

In reply to Comment 9 (Darren Eveland):
All is well on XP side, as I use RDP from my second pc to it almost daily aswell. Also, I can ping the server and it replies.. so thats why I am a bit amazed I don't get it working.

I will take a better look when I get off work.

Working now after I rebooted the server. Apparently a service or two was in disabled state for some reason. Hooray for Windows.

This is a nice piece of software...comparable to the MS version of the client I use on MAC OS X. Well done guys!

Is anyone working on a remote desktop server (ie the other way around)? That and a wireless connection on a Windows laptop, and you can lounge on your couch using your amy :)

Yes, that is the old version which does not connect to Windows XP Pro machines or Windows 2003 servers. It also does not support sound re-direction.

There was a quick attempt to get the new built to work on OS4 but it isn't as easy as it seems. With Roadshow we got a socket error. I guess because this version of remote desktop uses ixemul (which comes with MorphOS) it works, but under OS4 that is not the case and the tcp/ip stack (roadshow) for whatever reason doesn't like it. Anyway, the source code is available as per the GPL, so if anyone wants to tackle a port for OS4 they are certainly welcome. We had no funding to pursue an OS4 version, but I would assume if some people that want an OS4 version can put up some money it could be done.

But, I also know there is 1 or maybe 2 separate developments to get a modern rdesktop client to work on OS4. I would start at Alan Redhouse for more information, or ask the OS4 development team.

Or better a VNC-server so one could connect from a pda?
