I wonder how long before someone from Hyperion comes along and points out they own the rights to OS4 and running an Amiga emulator such as winUAE is illegal?

It is perfectly legal if you buy Amiga Forever, as this includes licensed ROM images.

I doubt if Hyperion have any legal interest in 68k ROM images. KMOS owns the rights to these.

I we get PowerPC emulators on PC running AOS4, Hyperion would benefit from extra sales.

No this is some thing, they will not benefit from, now the pries off the OS safely bundled whit AmigaOne hardware, an emulator do not an guarantee an sold version of AmigaOS, nor will A PPC emulator run any fast, The mac emulator PeerPPC runs like 7mhz powermac on an 3ghz pc, it's tottally point less, the mmu emulation tasks all the power out of the emulation, mmu is so integrated inn the new OS that it can't be disabled, like the custom chip emulation.

No one pays just to tryout an software package that might work, so it where unlikely that they ever pay once they have the software at hand,

UAE was originally a joke name Unusable Amiga Emulator.

There were previously hard to understand discussions about how PPC emulation was impossible because of "endian" differences.

(Like in Gullivers travels.)

As a matter of interest, is there a formal set of criteria for WinUAE to satisfy before achieving "1.x" status?

Or are we just being coy?

zap cap ?

is this some new trend of sticking advertising into the short description
of news announcements? If so its totally wrong! If zap cap wants people
to visit their site and buy their products then they should pay for advert
space on ANN.lu

I ask moderators to remove this piece of advertising from the news article!

This has been around for ages - check out winuaeclip in the Amiga Programs folder.

And I'm sure that this is old news and a duplicate article - 0.8.26 has been out for a couple of weeks.

What version, where? I've been using 0.8.26 for a while (released 15 May according to http://www.winuae.net/ ) and 0.8.27 (announced 31 May) is only a WIP announcement, according to the same site.

They probably won't do that because there is *nothing* illegal about WinUAE/UAE. This is the case for most emulators. It is likely they wouldn't even get a hearing. If you want legal precedent for this, just go look at the Sony vs. bleem! case a few years ago.

Reverse engineering is a legal right is virtually all countries in the world. It has to be, to allow innovation and competition. I repeat, there is nothing illegal about most emulators, or writing them. The only time an emulator can be thought of as illegal if information to make it was obtained illegally (for example, using stolen documents under NDA).

People pirating ROM images is a different thing. But as long as you own the corresponding Amiga **and you do not use both the real Amiga and emulated one at the same time**, you are completely legal to emulate the Amiga without needing to buy the Amiga Forever package.

Also the previous rights owners effectivly endorsed UAE by licensing for AmigaForever.

So the allegation would be "very interesting" and "not strictly true"
