As no-one seems to have noticed it here I'll say it. First AmigaOne owners seem to have recieved OS4 Pre-Release CD. Just look at this thread in AmigaWorld.net:

With the 'developer pre-release' done, 4.0 is probably not far from entering beta or release candidate stage. Whenever the release version of 4.0 has gone gold, there will apparently be another 2 months to press CDs and covers.

At least things are still moving on, and those who went out and bought Terons finally have something more to play with while waiting for what they already payed for. Congrats to those people, and well done to all involved.

End of the beginning at last.

The Amiga can no longer be called a "dead platform". While some may regret the forking, for a small community with a very small budget to produce three working operating systems is a sign of considerable determination and creativity.

I guess the only people who can really appreciate how much work the Hyperion team has done are the MorphOS team, who have been doing almost the same job.

If everyone can keep up the momentum for another couple of years, customers will have some very good products to choose from, and developers will have some good platforms to code for. Some, such as the author of Hollywood, are there already.

I think they can do much more than "play". There are obvious uncompleted parts, but enough is there and working to make it possible to write programs for AOS4, as well as running a good range of existing programs.

Of course, I didn't intend that to be demeaning or anything. I just think programming is fun. :') I, too, think it's about bloody time they get something out there. It should have been done continuously since the first day they got it to compile, but now they finally got a clue and dropped the 'nothing will get past these walls until everything's perfect' policy.

OTOH, the vast majority of the people who fell for the hardware scam and thus get this 'developer pre-release' today aren't developers by any stretch of the imagination.

BTW, what tools apart from the OS 'preview' are included in this release?

Every OS on this planet has more normal users than developers, and that sure includes MorphOS and OS4 too. But there sure is lot's of those guys who are ready to develop for the OS4 as soon as they get AmigaOne and OS4.

I suspect that policy came from Amiga Inc, who were very concerned with image.

But having 1000 users all reporting bugs can mean that a lot of what should be coding time is spent answering emails. It does make sense to have a limited number of beta testers in the early stages.

Hopefully from now on updates to various modules will posted on the web site so that by the time 4.0 final is issued, existing users will already be running it.

Apparently this will not be case. One of the Frieden Bros. said
there might be one or two updated things, such as the kernel, but that's
all. You'll have to wait for final version to be released.

He did say that, but I bet when they have something good they will want to share it. For example, when there is a fully PPC version of P96, are they really going to sit on it for months while all the users complain about slow graphics?

April 16 to June 3 isn't two months, but it does indeed seem a very long time to get some CDs made. My guess is that such a small order is low priority at the pressing company. There was some holdup over the printing.

Actually, I said "only critical updates will be released". That mostly means stuff that is essential. In my book this includes things like the native Graphics system, the recent altivec-enabled kernel, stuff like that.

FWIW That quality line from AInc smelled from the get go and has since proven to be what it smelled like. Amiga Inc now owns nothing in AOS4 except the name (remember KMOS!)

The release is the way it is (no downloads etc.) because Hyperion says so! It's their product, so that's their right!

If the complete computer including OS can be bought from a dealer, the platform is alive. That says nothing about the quality of the product or the sales numbers. It is commercially available.

OTOH Wired will still call it vapor, because the OS is in a "pre" state.

Where's our downloadable 4.0 NDK???

The job should have been given to H&P, at least THEY make their NDKs freely available for download.

Why should Hyperion not do likewise? How do they expect interested developers to evaluate and learn the system? How do they expect to have a reasonable amount of applications available by the time of the official launch?

Apparently some of the info is useful for 3.9 development too. Hyperion have shown a total disrespect for Amiga developers.

Anyway, I hope your need is sincere and if I recall right, it was mentioned many times that the SDK will be downloaded from somewhere some day. I can't see a reason why they would delay it on purpose.

Before that, study GCC and read the 3.9 SDK - you can't go wrong :)
