Here, you can find a new list of the features available in the current development
version of ambient. It gives an idea about what to expect in MorphOS 1.5.

Not to start a flamefest or anything, but I think Amiga OS4 is a lot more advanced than this Atari ST clone desktop.

Just my opinion though.

The one thing I realy real REALY dislike most of ambient is the integration of the prefs into one single prefs window. I like the amiga way much better, with every prefs having it's own application/gui and Icons where you can set certain options. It's doesn't feel amiga like in any way apart from looks of the window.
Futhermore, AmigaOS was known of it's tranparency. You know where everything is located. Now where the hell is Ambient located? in in the boot.img or something??? What libs is it using?? Can I replace a lib with a more recent one? AmigaOS is about the shared library principle and workbench was no exception....

They tried to copy AmigaOS in almost every aspect, why not make a workbench clone instead of this lame excuse for an GUI.

I surely hope that AmigaOS4 preserves this amiga look, feel and fundamentals.

You can run each prefs in its own single window. And start it from its own icon.

Ambient is in the Ambient/ directory.

You can replace libraries.

Shared libraries are used for about everything.

Ok, so you know you were 100% wrong about everything and you can now love MorphOS. Happy?

* I'm impressed by the skinability of the windows, and impressed by overall look.

* I think it looks like KDE, I expect an Amiga look form an AmigaOS clone.

* this pictures how ever do NOT give me an impression on how andvaned Ambient is, taking AROS as an example of disfunctional desktop that look like a million dollars.

* It be every interesting to try Amibiant, and compare it whit Workbench40 when it's finished.

???

What Amiga look is that? The Workbench 1.3 default look? The Amiga 3.1 default look?

I wish people would engage their brains before posting. You hear people complaining when MorphOS stuff is said to be Amiga-like, and then those same peole complain that it doesn't have the "Amiga look", whatever that is supposed to be. (I assume they don't mean the truly horrid official Amiga look as seen in AmigaOS up to 3.9)

Who cares if it's exactly like old AmigaOS? Who cares if it looks like Workbench or not? The real questions should be: is it any good, is it practical and does it have the functionality you expect.

Now I'm sure if you all put your thinking caps on you can make some valid interesting and substantive points about Ambient, be they positive or negative. You remember how to judge software by what it does rather than where it comes from, right?

If you were in a MorphOS site then I can see what you are saying. This is an 'Amiga' site so people here are naturally going to be curious to see "how Amiga like it is" and "if it looks like Workbench or not."

If this was being 'touted' as a 'MacOS clone', then posting these kinds of threads on MAC site would probably generate similar comments regarding "how MAC like it was" or "how much like MAC OS it looks like".

That's exactly what I like BUT I can't stand this cluttered way of configuration (system, ambient, mui global etc). Brain-dead. But I assume/hope it has something to do with adjusting the old MUI to a new OS and will go away.

The Ambient HAS the Amiga look and feel in every aspect, but in some
areas the Ambient version in MorphOS 1.4 (v1.29) was not developed
quite as far (and in other areas Ambient has already passed WB). The
Ambient prefs way is the MUI way of handling prefs. IMO the MUI way is
preferrable because it gives a much better overview to be able to set
every aspect of the prefs from one single application/window instead
of having to run one prefs application for every thing you want to set
(รก la Windows). Of course they tried to copy the Workbench (at least
in the beginning - now it's obviously PASSING workbench and becoming
so much more), because MorphOS is an Amiga OS re-implementation, it's
not BeOS, MacOS or anything else, but an AMIGA re-implementation! :)

It is obvious that Ambient in MorphOS 1.5 will be a KILLER! :)

I know that you are only here to troll, and I can understand your
desperation, because it seems like MorphOS is the ONLY next-generation
Amiga OS that will have a future (thanks to the Pegasos). The
pre-development OS4 version is too tightly tied to the A1 hardware,
and that will make it dead born in its incubator, and at the same time
the Pegasos is moving towards real mass-production (these are
obviously only the first steps, but it's HAPPENING!):

http://www.morphzone.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=494

No more production runs in the hundreds, we are moving towards
thousands or maybe even tens of thousands of units EACH RUN! It's
happening! The Pegasos has really been embraced with love by Freescale
(and also IBM) and the Pegasos has already working CPU cards utilizing
the very latest and most modern PPC CPU's from both those vendors, and
these will go into production before the end of the summer. Another
result of this partnership will be that future Pegasos versions will
use the latest G5 architecture, and any other future CPU from those
manufacturers.

And on the MorphOS side?

http://www.morphos-news.de/index.php?lg=en&nid=757&si=1
http://www.morphos-news.de/index.php?lg=en&nid=764&si=1
http://www.morphos-news.de/index.php?lg=en&nid=775&si=1

So Agima, I would be a little more humble if I were you. The current
version of OS4 is no real option for an Amigan that is looking for a
NG system to migrate to. It may be good for people who wants to
develop for Hyperions OS4 (who?), but that's it! It is currently not
good enough for serious usage in a general way (and that is what users
wants). In fact, on the A1 not even Linux is usable in a serious way.
In fact, there is no way to use the $800 A1 motherboard in a serious
way. The hardware is too expensive, too buggy, too old (it's even
getting quite hard to get a functioning memory module for it, and
those are becoming really expensive), there is nothing new in the
works that replaces it (except the Micro A1 which is even less for
about the same money). The A1/OS4 package did not make it to the
starting line, it was too little, too late and too expensive to make
it. So I would be a LITTLE more humble if I were you!

The only way for OS4 to have a serious future (whenever it matures
enough to be at least usable to a general public) is to jump on the
Open Desktop Workstation bandwagon. You will get a free ride to an
established customer base (like any other OS for the platform)! Either
that, or make it run on Mac hardware (like MorphOS will).

It seems no one noticed the real killer feature:

Depending on the media content, a different view can be used. For example an icon view with thumbnails, a list view showing most attributes of files, a view showing pictures. Everything is possible and views are pluggable modules.

Which is, if I understand it right, means plugin based windows content display. You can make DOpus alike plugin, content previews based on mime types, whatever, almost everything you please. Hopefully the specs will be in the SDK soon, and there will be talented persons writing plugins to Ambient soon.

Well, it also runs on BlizzardPPCs and CyberstormPPCs. So that argument is null.

I would add that unlike MOS it's going to be released for these accelerators... The MOS version for CS_PPC or BPPC is only in Piru's hands (and a few friends of him).

And MOS running on my CS-PPC would be great, but sadly, it doesn't seem to going to happen anytime soon. At least I know that OS4 will run in my miggy.

At the moment MOS is as tied to the hardware as OS4. I'm tired of that stupid argument. If I saw MOS 1.4 running on anything different than a Pegasos my opinion may change, but until then MOS is more or less as multiplatform as OS4 (If they don't release the CSPPC/BPPC versions, it will be even more tied to the platform that MacOS)

No it's not IMHO. The Blizzards/Cyberstorms is not a future path, they are *nothing* to build a future upon. They are dying of age, they are underspecced, and they only runs on even older systems with loads of hacks and patches added to them. From an OS POV, it's only interesting to provide an OS to these cards in order to suck in the few developers that won't upgrade to the NG hardware.

Besides, the situation for MorphOS and OS4 on these cards is exactly the same AFAIK; both OS's runs on these cards but only a select few have access to them. However, it is said that both will be released to the public at a yet to be announced date. That is, both OS's currently runs (in some way) on this hardware, none of them is publically available yet, but both will be at some time.

The Pegasos is good quality hardware, better specced than the A1, and even if it's higher priced than some low cost, mainstream x86 motherboards, it's still quite affordable. People can buy a Pegasos without taking a mortage on the house, and then use a variaty of OS's on it, including LinuxPPC (which works perfect on the Pegasos, unlike the A1). The price/specs of the A1 puts it out of reach for most people other than the die-hard fanatics who has already bought it anyway, and IMHO OS4 will suffer a great deal because of this fact. And I fail to see how the situation could possibly change. Due to the arrangement in the "A1 scene" (lots of parties involved, each claiming their own respective profit margins, etc) the A1 can't be sold much cheaper than today, and I see very little development of the specs and features. Sure, MorphOS is kind of tied to the Pegasos, but being "tied to" the Pegasos is actually not that bad when put in perspective!

yes, but there are thousands available, much more than the current number of A1+Pegasos users. And the userbase would increase a lot for both OSes.

Some developers who don't want to buy new hardware may port their apps to MOS/OS4 if these versions were available.

And the money already has been invested and OS4 on the CS-PPC should be quite finished (and MOS on blizzardPPC too). A different problem is that Bill Buck doesn't give any buck to the programmers so they don't want to release their work yet.

We are of course only guessing here (both of us), but I actually think it's quite possible that the current number of Pegasos owners has passed the number of active "classic PPC" users (it's the amount of *active* users that is interesting, not the amount of boards out there). And another question is how that will develop in the coming months? My guess is that more and more will upgrade. In fact, the demand for Pegasos motherboards is already far greater than Genesi can supply ("unfortunately", due to their Freescale orders).

> Some developers who don't want to buy new hardware may port their apps to
> MOS/OS4 if these versions were available.

Yes. And this would be the only reason to release an OS for the classic platform IMHO. But it will take some effort to make an *end user quality* OS release that runs problem free on most of the various hacked&patched classic systems out there, and will it be worth it? Perhaps the resources are better spent on other areas?

And you've made claims of 10,000 unit runs before Bill. Remember the 5,000 Pegs that would be here before the end of 2003 and then the other 5,000 that were shipping to that settop box maker sometime in September 2003? Or do I need to provide you with the links to your own comments yet again?
