The Paihia Team would like to announce the development of their new web browser, named Paihia. We hope to have an initial release by the end of 2004. Amiga-like systems and their users are crying out for a standards compliant browser. Despite all the modern web standards being very old (CSS2 is 7 years old, HTML4 is 5 years old) Amiga-like systems still lack in this area.

The leading objective of the Paihia authors (there are now 3 of us) are the implementation of real web standards - we aren't interestd in partial implementations, or bits here, and bits there. All 3 of us have extensive experience with modern web standards and we are particularly keen on being able to use our Amiga-like systems with the web, both to their full potential. HTML 4, Java/ECMAScript 1.5, CSS2.1, and DOM level 3 will feature in our initial release, with us then looking at more recent XML-based web standards which are still not widely used on the web for subsequent development.

Although work has been ongoing for 5 months now (and only recently with 3 developers), we still have a significant amount to complete. Having said that, we've been monitoring the progress of AmiZilla, and looking at their recent progress update on ANN, we are satisfied that Paihia is at a somewhat more advanced stage.

Paihia will be shareware. The application has been written from scratch and does not utilise any existing web content engines. Although this seems duplication of work, our progress tells us it isn't.

We should mention that we all lean slightly towards MorphOS and AROS, however, economics tell us there will more than likely be a version for AmigaOS3, and OS4.

In the next few months we'll be making public a website, with screenshots, of the new browser.

Keep watching!

The Paihia Team

With the Mozilla and Atlantis (KHTML) ports, and Paihia being written from scratch, you have all 3 options to choose from :)

I think that Aweb will be using KHTML ...?

Yes, we want to use KHTML, once enough developer start showing interest in doing the port. So far, nothing. :-(

> > Now it will be an OS running alongside MOS

> I wouldn't say "alongside" since:

> a) You will not be able to run them on the same hardware.
> Whichever of these operating systems that you may prefer, none of them are running
> "alongside" of the other, IMO.

Correct assumption in point (a), but you ignor the possibility of a PegII sitting
alongside an A1XE which would completely satisify that 'cut' from Comment 18 by
Alkis Tsapanidis.

Is the current html engine so bad that it doesn't deserve few small improvements to support more unicode letters, etc ? So much time passed since AWeb went open source, so little was done. Maybe such a big job (port khtml or die!) scares off few potential contributors ? :-(

Well, if you want to take it to that level...

He was talking about the operating systems, not the hardware. While a Pegasos and an AmigaOne could very well run alongside each other in the sense that they are at present in the same room/location, the operating systems and the applications are still operating in different hardware environments rather than alongside each other.

In reply to Comment 57 (brotheris):
I don't think it would scare developers away. The difference between the current AWeb and a KHTML based one would be very big, both in nature and in system requirements so both have merits for existing with the KHTML browser from 68060 and up and the current AWeb for smaller machines.

The problem with KHTML is that it's a pretty monumental (from an Amiga developer's perspective) thing to port, and we would like to do it right, so that it's usable both for us and for everyone else who wants to use KHTML in their applications. And it's not really a matter of "port or die". Anyone who can contribute a little to the process, are welcome to join and discuss with us.

If you can find the latest AWeb 3.5 beta (yes, there is one!), you'll see a few enhancements to the current engine. I won't post the link here though, since it's not official.

Good work to the Paihia authors! You deserve a succes! I hope to play with a OS4 native version :-)

Thanks.

Funny, all good news is now a FAKE for most people of our community

How we can find more developers with this spirit ?
