Old question, I know, but is there anything new about when AmigaOS4 and the AmigaOne be officially released, now that AmigaOS4 prerelease has been made available to (A1 owning) people? We've all waited long enough :)

AmigaOne was released some time ago and has been commercialy available for a long time. Check your favorite dealer if they have any in stock, or look up other dealers at http://www.eyetech.co.uk/ under the "dealers" link near the top of the page.

AmigaOS4 final release still seems to carry the "when its done" release date.

I think the big production approach to the pre-release means the next CD mailout won't happen for quite a while, especially since upgrade downloads are promised. I wouldn't expect the Official Release before 2005. This is just a guess, though, and just for fun.

"AmigaOne was released some time ago and has been commercialy available for a long time."

It seems that it is not released for normall users... according to Ben Hermans it's for developers ... especially if one's interest is in AOS and not in PPC Linux...

A little bit like Pegasos & MOS is for "advanced users"....

For the final release date of AOS4 for A1 ... Q4/2004 might be doable. Perhaps CSPPC version appears in Q3/2004 and BPPC version in 2Q/2005.

btw. what is the latest estimated release date for MOS1.5?

That seems about right, but they can decide at any time to draw a line and say "This counts as version 4.0"

So long as major updates are made available, there is no hurry. The important thing is that the coding should progress, and fill in the major gaps like Unicode support, not that the packaging should have some arbitrary number on it.

I think those hard-working guys will go on working, for which we should all be grateful.

In reply to Comment 1 (Bill Toner):
The "Amiga One" concept is a product made of two components, HW and OS.
But to be able to sell the Hardware even though the OS was not ready
they called it "early bird", and OS4 later got the prefix "developers
pre-release".

And to answer the main post - OS4 pre-release has NOT been made
available to all customers yet, only a few.

Download? But people don't have Internet, that was the reason behind
the "big CD production approach"!

No, it wasn't because most people do not have internet, but because not everyone is on broadband. They didn't want to create a two level OS4 Pre-release, with one containing everything on CD and the other containing the bare minimum for download.

I imagine the updates will consume much less space, thus negating the dial up vs broadband issues.

I'm just repeating what one of the Hyperion guys said. I think the difference is that the full pre-release ISO would be pretty big; the upgrade patches would be a lot smaller.

Eyetech confirmed that they now will be shipping CDs to their customers now.

Of course not everyone has internet, but those who don't have, could always ask their reseller nicely, if they could supply the updates on CDr for media cost...

Wrong. OS4 prerelease is available to ALL AmigaOne owners, not just few.
If Amiga dealers are slow sendinfgthose cds to their customers it is not Hyperions fault or something like that.

OS4 prerelease is available to all, but it has not reached all customers yet.

When hell freezes over. Lesson number one learned from the Snoqualmie thugs: Give people a (red-white) package to play with, and it keeps them in good confidence while a new plot may be cooked. With pressed CDs and a colorful package Hyperium has allocated itself a virtually unlimited amount of time. Nevermind. While it's purely at Hyperium's disposal what will be called alpha, beta, release, 4.1, 4.2, 5.0 etc., it'll definitely be mature enough to further injure this community. Ambiguity is the key.

WRONG, the pre-release of OS4 is NOT out to all A1 earlybird owners,
not even as I speak now! Many dealers got the CDs only the other day
(they were obviously NOT sent out when Hyperion posted that they
were, perhaps to a FEW dealers, but certainly NOT to everyone). The
dealers are making a big effort to support the A1 and the OS4 and you
should not blame them for either Eyetechs hardware selection and
licensing/production methods (which sets the price) nor Hyperions
grand scale CD production ideas and distribution policies. People has
been waiting for years, and they still have not got it, and this is
NOT because of the dealers are lazy or slow or anything like that at
all. Its not the dealers that makes these kinds of decisions.

My apologies for being vindictive and misspelling Hyperion. How much goodwill would you expect from people who lost work and investment due to haphazard turnabouts, endless delays, and seizure of the Amiga brand? OS4 fans could be celebrating Ralph Schmidt as their hero/savior for years now, wasn't there this religious zealotry utilized by Fleecy and his accomplices.

"When it's done" can never be argued, "time will tell" can never be dissented, and a "developer preview" can hardly be accused of being incomplete or faulty. It's always the same pattern. While something not in existance can't be criticized, the prospect of something is sufficient to keep people together and in excitement. If nothing else, it keeps them from buying a different product, or leaving the platform altogether.

Aren't you the least bit suspicious regarding a pressed CD and printed cover after so many years of development? Hyperion have opened themselves a giant possible exit from future developments. Let's see if they are going to take it -- only time will tell, as usual. :-)

Eyetech have mailed the CD to all their "Earlybird" customers. The people that purchased developer boards before the Earlybird offer have to wait a while longer untill they find out if/when they get one.

Years have nothing to do with it. It all comes down to the flow
of money to pay xxx number of man-hours of programming. If you
want it for free, go linux, but pay the balance in learning-time
deducted from your free time. The advantages of OS4 and MorphOS
over windows and linux, are that you can use a computer to do
what you want, without MS b.s. or the linux README/FAQ blues. If I had
to choose, I would rather learn Linux than suffer windoze, but the
Amiga way is better, red, blue, or emulated...we are lucky to have
so many choices, but without paying for the programmers man-hours,
the choices would be fewer and farther between. The many unpredictable
failures, both past and future should be learning opportunities for
all in the business, but to often are used as cannon fodder for
futile flame wars that waste valuable time, talent, and energy.

CHEERS for all-ways Amiga!
