Grasshopper LLC has announced Pagestream 5.0. The MorphOS version will be available later this month together with the AmigaOS 68k version.

New in PageStream 5.0:

- Alpha Blending for Text and Objects
- Picture Transparency
- Text Widow and Orphan Control
- Definable Printer Marks
- More Shortcuts
- Path Flatten and Smooth
- Hanging Bullets, DropCaps and Number
- New Duplicate Objects Method
- and more!

New in PageStream 5.0 Pro:

- Place PDF Objects
- Export Objects as Bitmap
- Automatically Adjust Text Width Justify
- Gradient/Radial Blend Masks for Pictures/EPS/PDF/Drawings
- Path Math: Union/Add/Unique/Subtract
- and more!

The Windows and Linux versions are the first available for download. Additional web site details, online documentation, and demos will be updated over the next week.

The Amiga 68k and MorphOS download are to follow later this month. Due to internal problems, the Mac OSX version will come shortly later but those patient customers will be receive 5.0 instead of 4.1 at no additional charge. The AmigaOS4 version schedule will depend on new developments with Amiga Inc now out of the picture.

While the Windows and Linux versions are available for download, they are not available in CD form at this time. We are still working to improve the Windows interface (the same interface code used in 4.1.6 is used in 5.0), and we also hope that feedback from initial users will help mold this version. As anyone who has been a PageStream user in the past knows, we are continually updating our products and the rate of change is greatest when a product is first made available. Four features have already been added this week in response to feedback from our customers, and a fifth and sixth is being worked on now (adding print to bitmap support and support for more TIFF file formats).

This is truly great news IMHO! :-D

Also:

"Pricing
At any price PageStream is a bargain, but PageStream's new low pricing is a steal. Retail price is a fraction of the other DTP applications at only $99, and the PageStream5.0 Professional package is only $149. But don't let our low prices fool you into thinking PageStream is low-end! PageStream4.1 customers can upgrade to 5.0 for only $40, PageStream4.1 Professional customers can upgrade to 5.0 Professional for only $40, and upgrade multiple copies for even less. Customers of prior versions of PageStream (4.0, 3.x, 2.x and 1.x) can upgrade for just $75. Other discounts exist. Check out our order page for more details on pricing."

I just upgraded! :-D

This is probably the biggest "power application" available, and it's definitely worth supporting at these bargain prices!

There also seems like there might be some kind of special superbundle version in the future!

:-O

It will be interesting to see how that folds out ...

I ordered my MOS upgrade as well, this is indeed a very professional
app. I can't wait to try out the MOS native GUI. I think the interface
is functionally very good in 4.1 but it has a rather 90's look at the
surface.

I have to sort out my credit card issues (switching bank), but sooner or later I'll get the MorphOS package for sure. Great news!

Do they actually make any money at these prices? I remember reading a review of version 4.1 for Mac, saying "It doesn't match QuarkXPRESS in features, but at this price you have to be mad not to buy it!"

In reply to Comment 6 (Van_M):
It would be more accurate to say that it doesn't match XPress in plugins. The main program does just about everything Quark does, and several things it doesn't.

What Quark does have is 3rd party plugins for high end work.

Hello !

I've never seen PageStream running, but it looks like a cool product.
So my question is: can PageStream replace a Word processor?

I would need a software to edit some letters and write reports on MorphOS. Can PageStream to that ? Does it support TurboPrint ?

Yes, it can do what you want, definitely. I don't know about printing
as I don't have a printer connected to my Peg yet. It seems some
people have problems.

Ok Cool!

Well, the price sound "ok" (of course the cheaper, the better !).
For the printing I will likely export my document in PDF and print them on a real capable printer.

Some others questions:
- Will Grasshopper LLC release a MorphOS's demo on PageStream ? (I won't spend 100 Euros in a software that I can't test..).
- Does PageStream 5.0 use the old AmigaOS 3.x style GUI or does it take avantages of MUI ?

Bye

It can on a fast machine. On a 68k machine, it is too slow for typing comfortably, as it reformats the whole line after you type a character. On Amithlon, it is fine - and probably on Pegasos too. The AmigaOne would need a JIT emulator.

For serious writing, I use Transwrite, which is fast, very stable, and has a word count on a function key. The only thing wrong with it is a quaint old pre-ASL file requester.

Then import the text file from Transwrite into Pagestream if you are doing the layout, or send it off to the publisher as a text file if somebody else is doing the layout.

Why not connect the "real capable printer" direct to the Pegasos? I use a Postscript laser printer connected to the Amigas.

Because the "real capable printer" can't not be buy by normal wallet :-)

Native MorphOS version should be fine on any PPC. Well, let's test.
I want a demo :-)

I expect there to be a demo version. Currently only Windows and Linux have demo versions, but that seems to be more a matter of having one programmer to do all the work than current policy).

I would think so.

Even on 68060 it is quite usable, just noticeably slow when typing. A native MorphOS version should be about 8 or 10 times as fast, I guess.

The aim is to get the time taken to format a line down to less than the time it takes to type a character - maybe 1/10 sec. It's a good example of "real time" computing.
