Does anyone know how to make a dual boot AmigaOS4/Linux system for the AmigaOne yet? Most people seem to be formatting over their Debian installs... Seems a bit of a waste :/
Perhaps if Debian made the AmigaOne install official, dual boot functionality might be addressed?

It should be technically possible. At least on the Pegasos with Open Firmware you can do it. On my Pegasos I have 4 OS's booting off one hard disk using some software called "Boot Creator" which creates a text file in the Forth language that OF reads and then selects the corresponding boot image you choose. It's like this:

1) MorphOS
2) PegXlin (Debian Linux)
3) PegXMac (knoppix for Mac OS X)

I would assume a similar scenario should be possible on the A1. Ask Hyperion.

It is already possible to dual boot both OS4 and Linux on the A1's. It works very well.

The only issue is whether the disk is formatted with MBR or RDB...if it's MBR,
then OS4 can't boot off it, so then you have to reformat with RDB. Once that's
done, or if it was done that way to begin with, then dual boot isn't a problem.

Hyperion guys said awhile ago that there is now nice dualboot support in the bootloader. It has menu, you can select which OS is selected by default etc. I think this is not yet available to users of OS4 pre-release.

Linux can still be loaded the same way. It's just that OS4 needs to sit on an RDB partition map, so those that have Linux installed in an MBR setup will need to move over or reinstall. I had Linux set up with RDB already, because I think MBR really sucks monkey tits. RDB is so much more logical when it comes to having many partitions.

Linux still doesn't work properly on A1, one of the reasons everyone wants rid of it. (Linux that is, not the A1, sadly.) The other being that very few of the True Amigan Fanbase actually knew how to use it.

The main problem is that most users do not know how to use Linux, if they only flowed the guide,

@kjetil

Linux is not something you can easily pick up without years of practice. The guides are usually of bad quality and explain everything but the problem you have. :P

[quote]Linux still doesn't work properly on A1,

S'funny, My A1 has been running debian for months (since I got it), No probs here.

of course some plonker is going to spout on about md5 loops.

I don't want to run a loop .. More interesting things to do with my comp.

I dont think i'll bother setting up my (new) drive as dual boot, I'll just keep debian on the baby 10gigger its on now and set it on primary slave.

It depends on what you mean by "using" Linux...for basic stuff that most people
do...email, web browsing, some word processing...you can find pre-installed
systems that anybody's grandma can use just as easily (or not) as any typical
Windows/Mac/etc. install.

If you mean messing around with the guts of it, that varies too. Any half-
intelligent person who puts a little effort into it can be doing things like
editing XFree86-Configs to get usable results in a few days or weeks at most.
If you really get into details though, and start wanting to do kernel hacking
and whatnot, then it can be insanely obtuse and you start appreciating the
transparency of something like AmigaOS, where you don't somehow end up
accumulating zillions of obscure files spread over obscure locations, where
trying to update one little file might cause a multi-day downloading session
if you're unfortunate enough to be stuck on a modem....

But then, any remotely serious Amiga user would have been familiar with CLI
stuff anyway, and might find the experience possibly interesting and likely
less aggravating than Windows.

It's not as if Linux on the AmigaOne is the first time in history that Amiga
users ever laid eyes on it, after all... People have been dual-booting Linux
on 68K and PPC Amigas for years.

The problem is that it is easier to put Linux on an MBR disk and OS4.0 on RDB. It is, apparently, possible to put both on a single RDB disk, but most people go for two drives.

Once done, either OS can be booted using boota (OS4.0) or diskboot (any OS) from the UBoot prompt.

Well, if one starts by installing OS4 first, and remembers to create a couple of partitions for Linux, then it really isn't very difficult :-)

Just don't run a partitioning program from Linux without first checking that it supports the OS4 bootloader (or at least know where you have the rescue CD :-) )
