According to these news on amiganews site, a beta-tester of Amiga OS 4.0 published on the web a video of 20 MB showing native Picasso96 on AOS4. It should match speed-benchmark points in performance as seen in a recent meeting. At least this is what I understood from my poor understandability skill of german language and from rough google translation.

Well actually it's because the refresh of the camera isn't 60hz, I dealt with this during animation studies as part of my art study course back in 1990-1993, simple to alter on a normal video camera, not sure about a webcam though.

It's because the refresh of the screen is not synced to that of the camera. In principle they could both be 50Hz, or 60Hz, or 83 Hz or whatever. In practice, a 50Hz frame rate is standard for PAL Video, so the computer display would have to be refreshed at exactly that rate and exactly in phase. All standard on an Amiga.

There is an alternative on Windows - there are several "screen capture" programs which make an AVI directly from whatever Windows sends to the monitor. It would need a very fast PC to capture something like 1600x1200 at 85Hz - and a very fast PC to play it back. But it is possible to capture part of the screen and sample some of the refresh intervals.

Instead of doing things in their coffee break and totally fuck up every possible concept of the OS, MOS developers get things done in a proper way.

I suggest you spend amigaworld.net a couple of more visits to see the braindeadness of OS4's coredevelopers when it comes to OS design.

Huh? It takes 1 second (or less) here too, on my Pegasos 1 G3@600MHz
with a not very fast hard drive. Cache is set to minimum since the
internet connection is very fast.

It takes less than a second on my A1@800 Mhz here. But that is with MUI already
in memory. But since MUI is used for Ambient in MOS, that means that MUI is
always loaded. On AOS4 it takes abit longer the first time but that is rather
obvious.

Stefan: Yes, that makes sense. Not that it can take that long to load
MUI either, considering how fast MOS boots including MUI. But I don't
know if there's a PPC native version of MUI for OS4 yet.

There are no official dates or anything about MOS1.5, some planned
features are known, that's all. We just have to see. If you're
thinking about buying a Pegasos, I wouldn't hold my breath until 1.5,
take a serious look at 1.4 right now instead.

Well AMon, while Aos4 sound is just a Beep() function (implementated using Alkis only neuron), Mos AHI is a full 5.1 sourround sound engine.
About Aos1.5 the answer is "Why bother Oan update if you want a Pegasos? Mos1.4 is already dozens times more advanced that this alpha Aos4. If your ask is not a flamebait ... it's a trollbait"

>>"AOS4 on A1 seems faster. And that's not too bad, A1+AOS4 seems to be the fastest (native) AOS system ever. ;)"
>I propose using Image Studio for speed tests. It is free on Aminet.

Is there native AOS4 version available?

Other than that, despite the lack of the raw calculation power when comparing to the x86(native), any system running AmigaOS tend to give better overall Amiga feeling (especially responsiveness) than the same system with Linux/Windows/OSX.

But also in that raw performance area, A1+AOS4 seem to close the gap 10 years (being only 4-5 years behind). Reaching towards x86(4*PPC clock) speed in 68k emulation and passing it in native AOS code.

>How long does your Amiga-like computer take to apply a blur to a 2000x2000 pixel image?

I have A4k/060/50 and assuming 68k version... I bet it would take long time (A1+AOS4 system & non-JIT 68k most likely outperforms it already, CSPPC+AOS4 should not outperform it, yet).

About the "Amiga-like" -thing. I prefer the continuation of the original untill:
a) development stops
b) it becomes un-usable or slow or (more) difficult to use
c) the alternative becomes more appealing (a lot of factors, like BB)
d) I die.

In reply to Comment 74 (Eva):
I very rarely use sysspeed for anything productive...

It's more important to get the high responsiveness in general than get high numbers in any single benchmark.

(even though A1 seems to beat pegs in some tings, like RC5 and some memory benchmarks, I'm sure it does not indicate any real life performance difference)

Depends on it how ready PPC native P96 is. It's quite possible that speed will improve even more, when P96 is further optimized. This is first time we see P96 PPC in action, so i would not be surprised if speed is improved even more.
