Aros-Exec Reports that Michael Schulz have just commited his recent changes to ata.device. As promised, this update includes basic UDMA support together with some fixes (LBA48 harddrives work now as expected, and the drive capacities up to 2^57 bytes are supported).

Great news, i really should install AROS again me thinks :)
Anyone tried AROS within BOCHS yet?

In reply to Comment 1 (Amon_Re):
Why install ? You simply boot from CD.

Because i want a working installation without having to repartition my harddrive? :P

Booting from a CD requires you to repartition your drive?

Does it work with all ATA drives ? I've been reported that some of them (especially harddrives, but not only) where not ATA compliant. i.e. you expect some signals from the drive but it doesn't answer correctly.
Some examples are: Seagate Barracuda, Maxtor HDs...

Thanks

I can't save files to the cd i booted from...
I just want a hard drive installed version, nothing more nothing less, it's a simple question, but if nobody tried it yet i guess i'll try myself when i have some free time.

Dunno if it works with all drives, I guess we won't knoe until someone tries it on all drivesa ;) However, Michal has already had to overcome some problems due to the fact that his HDD doesn't stick to the standard's specs: basically, it would trigger interrupts even if the DMA transfer wasn't completed yet. I guess that othr HDD will show other problems of the same league, which will have to be fixed when and if they are found.

If you go to http://www.aros-exec.org/ you will find a tutorial on how to install AROS to HDD. Search also in the forums section, there are some useful posts there on the subject.

However, the new ata.device is not in the nightly builds yet.

I suppose it should be trivial to install this device onto an existing install?

LOL. Ok, I'll see if I can help Michal in testing this...

The device is in the kernel image, you'd need to relink the kernel to get it in... nothing a normal user can do, I'm afraid. On the other hand, if you're used to compile AROS by yourself, it's quite easy.

MD5 sum on a 600MB test file shows, that at least on the test machine the UDMA mode works without any problems.

can AROS run 68k Amiga apps like AmigaOS4 and Morphos ?
if no, is it possible by integrating in transparency like Amithlon UAE ?
The AROS ATA Device Advances : Comment 17 of 23ANN.lu

In reply to Comment 16 (top):
The "Like Amithlon" way is impossible. The amithlon emulates BigEndian CPU, whereas AROS does work always in the endian mode of host CPU. So in case of x86 it is always Little Endian. Integrating transparent BigEndian m68k emulator is hardly possible in such situation.

Forcing Aros to work always in BigEndian would cost too much system power to be considered.

But better integration of UAE into AROS (mouseclick old program, UAE starts transparently) is planned, but unfortunatelly it's unknown how will it evolve.

Is there a list of available software for AROS? ghostscript ports etc?

Hey about the BigEndians and littleendians........ damn'it someone call eth calvery or at least some cowboys....

Oh wait, ... scratch the cowboys.... that was tried already with the gateway ranch brand...

guess this is AROS where we don't need no stinkin mushroom fertilizer...

Its just better being down to earth...rather than trip'in on nowhere ideas....

In reply to Comment 17 (Michal Schulz):
if uae is integrated transparently, when you launch an app it will be great to not open a WB screen for each 68k AmigaOS app. It will be great to see Amiga software be launched as they are in AmigaOS4 and Morphos, fully integrated in the user interface.
AROS can be a solution to run AmigaOS apps on PC hardware with the choice to get native X86 apps.
this is great and this "AmigaOS variant" can contribute to improve the number of Amiga users by attracting PC users from Linux and windows OS in the PC market...
UAE solutions on PC like AmigaForEver/UAE are excellent, but unfortunely cannot allow developpers make native X86 apps like Amithlon and Aros.

In reply to Comment 20 (top):
Well you could have one clone WB screen where all apps without a named screen would go and the others, much like before would open their own screen.. I bet this would be a far more sensible option, and at least one I could live with.. :)
