I'm looking for additional front page and/or comments moderator(s), initially just for the month of August. If you are (mostly) impartial towards the various companies, have a few minutes to spare every day, and are interested in helping out, please send me an email to further discuss this.

I would offer, but I feel my position as OS4 beta tester and vocal supporter would perhaps be seen a bias, even if I personally have nothing against MOS, AROS or Amithlon ;-)

A few thoughts on moderators :

- As with many positions of power, those who don't want it are the best candidates.

- While it's tempting (and all too common) to think that giving power to a disruptive character (e.g. Eva) may engender a sense of responsibility, it is more likely to be abused, and is disrespectful of those who manage to behave better as a matter of course.

- You have to be hard-nosed, and maybe even a bit of a bastard, to be a good moderator; fear of abuse should not deter one from appropriate moderation, and the occasional abuse of power is good for keeping the plebes guessing...

- (Humorous reference to a certain ex-moderator on a certain site removed in the interests of peace and harmony within the community, as certain participants of common sites have an over-sensitivity to any such exhibitions of humour, the sad gits).

Having said that, I am happy to accept your nominations, and will endevor to do the job to the best of my ability; thank you, and God Bless Me.

Gregg

Agreed, but NOBODY will be free of such accusations, be it red, blue, dark green or pale yellow... :¬) Trolls are trolls, even when they are being moderated. And, of course, if someone feels that has been moderated erroneously, he/she can always complain to CK.

The posts from the person in charge of moderation (the word itself says it all) have had to be self moderated, i.e. polite, reasoned, on topic, based on facts or in documented, reachable info, etc. I would not give moderation to a person who has wrote off-topic, insulting or trolling posts in the past. Of course, even a moderator has his/her own oppinion but the question is to show it as little as possible when moderating.

That's why I thought in those names...

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

The problem is that as soon as you are involved in the community you are "tainted".
Even if you are not, people will assume that you are based on your moderation decisions.
However I do think that the people who were making accusations and who did not like that all flavor of the colors live together here now belongs to more dedicated sites (even if a lot of them still visit ANN and do post anonymously).
We are definitely short handed. I welcome anyone willing to help with making objective moderation decisions.

I vote for EVA, Mike Bouma and a third person, not involved
at all (even benner, who hasn't NEVER involved) with Amiga.

The only rule: they have to discuss and AGREE for each
censure.

If not possible, simply get people from outside Amiga
community. Possibly someone who don't care about Amiga.

Moderation, right now, is mostly two separate tasks:

- Eliminate people who spam the comments with swearword-ladden posts with no real content to speak of. Moderations like these are usually very easy to do, since it's most often plain to see when someone is just being abusive.

- Promote unmoderated posts to one of the more suitable categories that get displayed on the main page. Sometimes, this also involves removing duplicate submissions, or submissions that are not in the spirit of the site.

It will not be easy to find a person that want the job and isn't pro MOS or AOS4.

Having said that I also believe there are both red and blue guys that would take the job serious enough to forget about what "camp" they where in.

Hooligan or Itix seems like good candidates and Peter Gordon does too.

I am not available, for two reasons.

First reason is that my wife finally was granted the permission for stay in Finland after six months of struggle, and I intend to spend as much time as possible with her in coming weeks.

Second, as Peter told about his "os4 betatester-problem".. I'm moderating MorphZone so I would get the exactly same treatment. We are both "stamped" even before starting.. so I'll say I'll pass aswell.

I wouldn't consider it an "Amiga" if my A4000 was running Linux instead of AmigaOS. Then it's a Linux system. Yes, it says Amiga in the front, but you get excactly nothing useful out of that logo.

My AmigaOne wasn't an "Amiga" until a few weeks ago either. Not to me, at least.

Oh well, this is off-topic, it is :-)

I agree with what you just said too, Olegil. However, I also believe that just like the hardware is not defined by the OS it is running, an OS is not defined by the hardware it runs on either. Linux running on an Amiga does not make Linux an Amiga OS and an Amiga running Linux does not make the Amiga a Linux computer. BUT, listen to this great new revolutionary concept; an Amiga computer can be used as a Linux system and Linux can be used as an Amiga OS.

These two different viewpoints are not contradicting each other.

Now I know you're not beeing serious. However, I would still like to know how you got Amiga programs into the equation? I mean, noone mentioned anything about programs nor applications, much less claimed that the applications is what defines the platform. What kind of computer platform/system you have is defined by what kind of OS and hardware combination you have, nothing else.

In reply to Comment 48 (brotheris):
Running MorphOS, regardless of the underlying hardware, makes your system a MorphOS system, just like running Linux on your Amiga would make your Amiga a Linux system.

I know what you're trying to get at, that I would somehow claim that your Amiga is no longer an Amiga when you run another operating system than AmigaOS. That is of course not true. Your Amiga hardware will always be Amiga hardware. However, when you're talking about a system or a platform, it's NOT defined by the hardware. It's the operating system that makes it a system and therefore the system is defined by the system operating it. Is this really that hard to understand?
