Nice article. IBM can't do it alone. It needs some help from major software development companies like Sun (Java), Macromedia (Flash), Oracle, Adobe, Apple etc if not support from SuSE, Redhat et al. And Motorola should get its act together. I just hope they will believe that there is future in PPC besides embedded systems, Macs and XBoxxx.

On the other hand they will probably have their hands full with supplying chips for the Powermacs and the Xbox in the medium term. In the long term it would do them good to supply to an even broader market though.

Good news, indeed. If any potential customer turn his his eyes from x86 to PPC market, he will find that there are not many alternatives: IBM, Apple... what more? A good opportunity for available PPC boards out there ;¬)

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

I only see bullshit and nothing of intrest at all, after reading it. What's so special about it? Only words words and words.. It's not "Move over, Intel. Linux and PowerPC are in the fast lane", it's "Move over, nothing to see here".

In reply to Comment 2 (sutro):
Is there no Java on LinuxPPC? Surely OSX has Java? Did Apple pay Sun for this or was it already running on PPC BSD?

In reply to Comment 7 (Colin Camper):
Sun's java VM implementation for LinuxPPC was up to 1.3.1, available through blackdown. IBM has put much effort in bringing JDK 1.4+ to its pSeries servers but for developers using LinuxPPC on desktops things are not as easy. Nevertheless, important java platform components like J2EE or platform-native versions of Java3D, JAI, JMF remain either unsupported or stuck in old versions.
