From www.morphos-news.de: The German Pegasos dealer Vesalia is currently offering G4/1GHz CPU cards to upgrade your Pegasos II G3 mainboard. The boards are available for a limited time until August 13th, 2004 and cost 239.90EUR (incl. 16% VAT). Please note that the cards are only working together with Pegasos II and not with Pegasos1 mainboards!

I fail to see the benefit.. maybe for "my wang is bigger than your's!" contests but in the real world are there any *useful applications for **MorphOS that would require the extra horsepower? Seems like a waste of money to me,the money would be better spent on some more hard disks, upgrading your broadband connection to the next level etc..

*I.e. Not Dnetc, or benchmarkers.
** If people wanted a fast linux box they could could buy a complete fanless x86 system for less than this new cpu card on it's own.

Sure, renderers of different kind (like graphics), compilers, encoders/decoders can't get enough of horsepower, especially if you want to do lots of other things at the same time. But you won't need much horsepower to just listen to mp3 streams while chatting on IRC or browsing the web and stuff like that, so if that is all you are doing then this might not be for you.

That could only be a VIA Epia MiniITX board with the Eden processor. If running power linux apps on that board is what you get a hard-on from, then why don't you go ahead?

IF MorphOS 1.5 can run Cinema 4D 4.2(AOS 3.X) then a faster processor would maximise its rendering performance (just illustrating an example).

There are other applications that will benefits with a faster processor are
e.g. DOSBox, MAME(multiple instances), Software OpenGL render, Main Actor, ImageFX and 'etc'.

PS; I havent checked the compatibility list.

Just wait until people start using h.264 and high-def movies, you're gonna need as fast a processor as you can get - and that's just to play them!

He means the Vesalia offer about upgrading your PegasosG3 to G4 if you give your old G3 card.

I guess that it would be a good idea to offer Peg2 G3 systems with the used G3 module slightly cheaper. It's a way of increasing the user base because in some countries 350 (with VAT included) for a G3/600 board sound slightly expensive. If the price could be dropped to 250 VAT included more people would get interested in the Peggy2... Genesi would produce the motherboard and would find a use for the used cpu modules. Of course, the option of trade-in for a G4 wouldn't be possible with these boards...

By the way, why wouldn't a trade-in be possible with an already traded-in
G3?

As long as the systems are marked as used/second hand, there is no difference
between a processor that came off the production line and one that has been
in 3 different Pegasos boards. The slot connector is very sturdy and was chosen
for that reason (no bent pins, no fiddling with levers and pressure, less
chance of breaking it.. and a monkey could install it)

"in the real world are there any *useful applications for **MorphOS that would require the extra horsepower?" Frodo at the best settings (precise cycles, no frame skip, the best quality audio, 1541 emulation) needs fast machine. It is bearable on G3 @ 600MHz where you get approximately 125% emulation speed at max.

Simply because if you bought a Peggy with an used G3 module for let's say 250 VAT Included and you tried to take advantage of Vesalia's offer you would get a G4 for less than the price of a new G4 and you still would have a first-hand G4 module and a first hand motherboard for less than 500 vat included.

That wouldn't be fair with customers who paid for an entirely new Pegasos G4.

I think that it may be ok to make an offer upgrade when faster G4s become available and people with a 1Ghz G4 starts to upgrade to a 1.4 or 1.5 Ghz G4.

IMHO no new G3/600 modules should be produced and these machines with G3/600 should use the exchanged cpu modules. New G3 should be at least 800Mhz so users who buy a new system will have something more to win and it will be more attractive to users.

So people short of money will be able to get a cheaper Peggy, Genesi gets rid of older G3s and starts to sell faster G3 systems, more attractive to new users.

YES, I know that 600Mhz is more than enough for MOS, but lots of people want to run MOL with MacOS X, Linux, or simply think that 600Mhz is too slow for a computer bought in the year 2004.

Genesi buying more G3/600 is like digging their own grave... unless the get these new cpus cheaper and they make prices lower.

The idea of giving the option to the buyer of using a second hand G3 and buy the computer for less money will probably attract more users and Genesi won't have to spend money creating new CPU modules

I don't think we are making G3s at the moment. Maybe that's part of the point?

Whether we move up to a newer G3 model or buy more 750CXe's is up to Gerald
and Thomas. It's not really "suicide" - the G3 is so low power consumption
yet reasonable performance it still has a market under the faster fanned G4.

If I remember correctly BBRV told that in the end of the summer the will produce G3s again.

IMHO It may be a good idea to sell the used modules cheaper so more users join the platform. Adding something faster than a G3/600 may attract more people. I guess that the perfect moment to switch from the 750cx to a faster model will be when IBM releases new G3s with VMX (aka Altivec).

But selling cheaper pegasos2 with used g3 modules may help to increase the user base and would create a small profit (even if you don't win much selling the used g3s you can sell a new motherboard, so this will increase the number of produced motherboards and would make Pegasos even more competitive)

A PegII with used G3 CPU module can't be much cheaper than a PegII with new G3 CPU module, since the G3 module isn't that expensive in production. Sure it has it's costs (and I can't tell you the exact ammount) but a used G3 will not help that much to reduce costs (I guess the whole G3 module costs around 50 EUR). Difficult to find prices for the 750Cx...

Well, even a price reduction of 50 may make difference in making someone think about getting a pegasos. Remember that most of people don't keep in mind that the production run is much smaller. You have to add VAT to the prices and a price reduction of 50 may be as buying the computer without VAT, so many people would be interested in this.

As I said.. "at the moment".

I think this is just to make up for the fact that there are only G4s available
right now, people either want to upgrade (to a G4) or buy a G3 (because G4 is
too expensive for them). The trade-in deal solves it. Remember that Vesalia's
deal is only temporary (up to August 11th..?)

corpse: I think that is up to the potential consumer to decide if he wants a G4 or not, it's not like Genesi is forcing people to upgrade, this is an offer to the people who got the G3 version but want to upgrade, what's the problem?

Why do you think the difference between a used and new G3 card would be 100EUR?
I would laugh if bplan had to pay 100EUR for an entire G3 CPU.
